Lincoln (2012)
Dialogue heavy.
This is a beautiful looking film with excellent acting and for that at least it can not be faulted. However after sitting through the film in the cinema and then realising that the time seemed to drag, I have to criticise this film. The problem I found, was that the script was far too dialogue heavy, I was left wanting to be shown a story and instead having it explained to me in lengthy debates taking place in 2 or 3 rooms. We never really get shown what Lincoln is fighting for, this is only really hinted to us through dialogue and the rare few shots. I would have like this to have been more of a visual story and I feel that this was something that was highly lacking because the majority of the film takes part in a few sets and we never explore the world outside. I understand that this was a political biopic so of course there is going to be a fair amount of dialogue, however for me it was too much. This left me feeling detached from the overall narrative and although I thought the acting was superb, there was too much explaining in places where I wanted to be shown.
Blackbeard: Terror at Sea (2006)
Bad Research, Very Inaccurate
I am currently writing a fictional novel on the life of Edward Teach and in doing so I have been researching this topic for little over a year. I thought I would watch this to get more in sight into the character of Blackbeard. However the research conducted into the period and into Edward Teach himself is very poor, almost as if they have only looked into one source for their research. I am only part way in to watching but am already slightly disappointed on the lack of structure and diffinative lack of depth. It feels more like a taster of a portion of pirate lifestyle than a factual telling of the life of Edward teach, or at least what we know of it. Seeing as this is supposed to be a factual representation and not fiction, very, very bad research.
Valhalla Rising (2009)
Dull
This is possible the worst film i have seen for many years, it was not only dreadfully un-entertaining but also flawed cinematically and technically. I found the narrative dull and difficult to follow, i did not feel any sort of alignment to the main character, perhaps this is due to him being muted however and not saying a word throughout the entire film. I found the variety of shots very limited and there were no establishing shot to give me a proper idea of the surrounding and i gathered no sense of place from this film. To me it felt cheap, it was almost as if they used close ups to hide the fact they could not afford a decent set, i have no problem with lower budget films providing the narrative delivers, however I felt it did not. The narrative is somewhat tedious and it takes a long time before any words are spoke, even then it doesn't really give you an idea of the narrative, the films ideology was somewhat bland and as a whole i would not recommend this film on any grounds.
Reaper (2007)
Please make new series not just a comic. .
I have just watched both series of the program and have loved every episode. I think that the whole idea is brilliant and much better than some of the other shows around today. I am however really disappointed that there will not be another series, the show leaves us on a cliff hanger and i'm sure a lot of people, would like to see a solution. If this was to be sold to UK and European television companies I am sure that this would get a hell of a lot more views. Channels like Channel 4, BBC Three and E4 would be the perfect window for this show, ratings would be assured on them channels. I would love to see a new series and i'm sure many people would agree that they would also love to see a new series.
True Blood (2008)
Bad acting and predictable script. Worst Final
I really like the concept of true blood and i wish i could give it a truly outstanding review. However i think that it is flawed in many way, although the idea of vampires "coming out of the coffin" is very original i do not like the main elements of the show. The acting is very poor and although Anna Paquin was nominated for an award of best actress for this series, i think she is one of the worst for the role of Sookie. The show tries to align you to the character but i just ended up hating this character. Unfortunately the script is also very predictable and most of the lines that are used are cliché and predictable, you end up knowing what the characters will say before they have even said it. The narrative could do with being more complex and having more separate narratives. I would say as a whole, if you are bored of an evening this is worth a watch but it is not the best show HBO has produced by a long shot.
Worst Finale EVERRRR That was the WORST final episode i have ever seen. Sookie annoyed the hell out of me and nothing really happened. To be honest what was the point in the entire season now?. For me the plot was disaapointing, nothing special happened. Yet again we don't find out what Sookies power is and she is so dumb that who cares?!?!?! When Sam is stabbed she just stands there and she does exactly as everyone tells her, i hate her character with a passion i wish she could have been a main character killed off. I also read that main characters would die in this episode but it was only the ones introduced in the new season. I have waited two weeks eagerly anticipating the last episode and i feel the series did not live up to expectations.
The Happening (2008)
Why this film TRIED to be important and why it FAILED.
'The Happening' contains blatant ideologies of global warming and is trying to warn the American audience of the effects of global warming by scaring them into submission. I wouldn't go so far as to say this film is scary in any way, frankly it is poorly thought about and the idea that the wind and effectively climate change is chasing you is appalling. Also i don't think the thought that it makes you kill yourself is at all scary so why make a horror that just doesn't scare? Well the film maker has tried to warn the audience about the effects of global warming. In my opinion the idea behind this was a good one conveying messages through the medium of film normally works BUT the ideologies must be much more subtle and not forced upon the viewer. The film concentrates far too much on conveying it powerful ideologies and not on the generic and entertainment side of the film.
There are many obvious flaws in this film and i did not find it entertaining, i think that for this film to have worked much of it would need to have been changed. It needs to be more generically conventional, in fact it is so generically confusing that it is hard to completely tell what the film is trying to be. On IMDb it is listed as 'Mystery' well to be honest i agree with that it is a mystery.
