The Boys (2019)
Unfortunately, a season too far
I think many will be lost on this season as it leans heavily into divisive US-centric political tropes. The satire was a key strength of the show but sadly seems to be becoming a defining weakness as it shifts from satirically representing corporatations (something we can all get behind) to satirising people with certain brands of politics which feels a lot like punching down in a way that targeting corporate behemoths doesn't.
Not being from the US myself I don't enjoy having to pick a side in a real life culture war in order to be invested in the character archs we're following here.
Another issue is that it's become an imitation of previous seasons rather than innovating on previous seasons. I'm sure it's increasingly difficult for a series that's gone this hard for this many seasons to continue shocking and surprising the audience but expectations are no longer subverted here. The gross out type shock moments have usually been combined organically within the narrative. However, in the vein of Gen V the gross out moments are coming across contrived and formuliac and could all have been written out without missing a beat.
Overall the season feels different even down to the way the cast look. There's a very plastic, artificial sense to this season. I felt similarly for Gen V and I'm sorry to say whatever "that" is, has bled through into the mainline series. I'm hoping the narrative will become more compelling and make up for the present deficiencies but currently it's not looking good.
Starr and Urban continue to perform admirably.
Camp Lakebottom (2013)
Creative - Enjoyable - Limited
6/10
This show does well to produce engaging scenarios for it's stale characters. It has a solid enough base that because the characters are so familiar (in a way) you can forgive the lack of substance and likability. Don't think - just sit back and enjoy the stories. I can't say every story is a hit but for me there are more hits than misses here.
Camp Lakebottom is basic (even for a short). The humour isn't particularly clever, the characters aren't fully developed and while the art work is generally attractive it doesn't hold up against its top flight peers.
But... Despite the feeling that this show has been thrown together on a shoestring budget it is charming in its own basic and very limited way. It's not great - but it is good and I would watch Camp Lakebottom over anything on cartoon network these days.
