The Simpsons (1989)
Used to be brilliant
Yet again, Disney ruin something which was once brilliant. I used to watch The Simpsons and always had laughs at the gags and character exploits: not anymore. Why do they have so many musical numbers and Woke storylines? Dull and uninspiring writing now. Not for me. I don't watch it anymore.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Bad writing spoils it
An excellent ensemble cast. I had high hopes for this, but I couldn't take it anymore after 30 minutes. The script is dire. It's unbelievably formulaic and tedious. I certainly do not blame the actors - but if they have to constantly work with shoddy scripts they will not be able to save a movie.
Seriously, don't bother watching this, even on a lazy Sunday afternoon!
Black Summer (2019)
Excellent Take on The Zombie Genre
I found this gem of a show whilst searching on Netflix. I'm glad I did find it. The twist on the zombie genre is that the zombies are quick and are difficult to take down. Moreover the flashbacks are very expertly interwoven into each episode.
The writing shows that when you are in an apocalyptic world you are going to make irrational and stupid decisions because of fear, fatigue, hunger and paranoia.
What I really loved about this show was the character driven season 2 - the end of which definitely led me to wanting a season 3.
In my humble opinion, this is a fantastic Netflix original which has very decent writing (for a refreshing change!)
Army of the Dead (2021)
Could have been so much better
The SFX, CGI and make-up are outstanding.
The problem with this film is that (yet again) the script writing is shocking in many parts - especially some cringeworthy dialogue. However, there are parts which are very good: I particularly enjoyed the last forty minutes or so of the film. If only it had been this consistent throughout.
The credits at the end last about six minutes. There were many many people involved in making this movie. What a pity the budget couldn't have been used for someone who could have written a decent screenplay.
Kingdom: Ashin-jeon (2021)
A Non-Woke Written Female Lead
The pace of the movie is quite slow (a tad boring) at first but the pace really picks up later. The visual transition of the strong - but troubled- lead character from girl into a woman was an interesting way to do it.
The lead female is very well written because you don't focus on her being a female (I know: quite ironic that I'm focusing on this, but please bear with me). You just focus on the character, which is a sign of good writing. For those who have watched the 'Kingdom' series, you will se the link by the end of the movie.
For anyone fed up with the woke agenda-driven drivel being produced these days, this movie is well worth watching. It would help if you're into the genre but not essential.
Beat the Chef (2019)
Irritating Drivel
This show is just awful, devoid of any entertainment or personality. The contestants are bland self absorbed types. The 'panel' of judges think they're experts but most are the social mediahhh types. No wonder repeats of this 'show' are being shown at 5am on Channel 4.
Alone (2020)
Had its moments
A standard zombie trapped-in-the-apartment movie. The cameo by Donald Sutherland is excellent. The music in the film is fantastic, more suited to a blockbuster movie than this one. The ending is not really an ending per se and left me wanting more -which is a good thing, I suppose.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Let down by an AWFUL script
Acting: very good
SFX: very good
Script: so predictable, horrendous, dire, rubbish, amateurish, garbage.
Where do they get these so-called scriptwriters? This movie had the potential to be excellent, but as-so-often these days it was ruined by extremely shoddy script writing.
