The Cove (2009)
It's a documentary!
I used to love Japanese culture, particularly the old samurai culture about doing things for honour and not fortune or fame. But this documentary shocked me not only in the way the horror induced by those sick minds; but also the foreseeable frightening consequences that the blind / short-sighted government directly invoked. (recalling the several Japanese post-modern films about the end of the world / Japan)
The day after watching the film, I was keen to read others comments and thoughts about the film, as I myself have been deeply disturbed by it. However I see some are confused and therefore subconsciously imposed some rather personal assumptions onto the film without realizing it. The documentary was not purposely made to compare the value of lives, but some might choose to understand it that way because of their own mindsets. I agree that seeing other species of fishes, in the same documentary, being transported to the fish market and butchered there, was equally disgraceful; but again, that was not the point / message of the film!
Others posed the argument that dolphins are merely food as 'understood' by the minority of Japanese people – well so why do they try so hard to hide the cruel killing? – if they had no shame of what they do! In fact, I don't think they have shame at all! – from what's seen in the post-event! It seemed like a day to day job – what kind of job was that! (and how sad it is to see things like that ... ...!) And what about the aggressive behaviours when the westerners tried to approach in the water? Or was it just too bad for the 'ignorant' ones to have 'earned' the 'thanks' from the entire nation for being called the dolphin slaughters!
One of the superiors of the government claimed that they have been doing research and have found a technology for the dolphins to die instantly, isn't that fooling look on his face appalling and unconvincing? (& he was in a damn monotone!)
To me, it's a documentary which was made by several caring ones who made their very efforts and even risked their lives to reveal the truth. I bow to that! In terms of the structure of the film, it may not be ideal, but I'd look at it this way: the universal TRUTH itself is the ultimate beauty, as long as it's not presented skewed, there remains the beauty!
