Apollo 13: The Dark Side of the Moon (2020)
This Isn't History and Barely Drama
Google Fred Haise right now. Tell me why Michael Salami is playing him. The man is the last surviving crew member of Apollo 13, not even dead yet, and this director chooses to hire a man that looks nothing like him in every way. These real life heroes deserve better than a diversity hire. Utter insanity. Don't waste your time.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
20 Years and Worth the Wait
I could not believe how good this was. I was expecting no end of fan service but this how you do it right. This film seemed to be made with love for the character and the audiences who love him.
And him. And him too.
SPOILERS:
Tobey Maguire was my first Spiderman as a kid and Spiderman 2 holds up to this day. Seeing Alfred Molina and Tobey share a scene together was absolutely touching. Andrew Garfield's performance was chock full of nuance and gave his Spiderman a proper send off. As lame as his films were, his Spiderman was a lot of fun and deserved better.
Kaubôi bibappu: Cowboy Bebop: Pierrot le Fou (1999)
Well That Was the Saddest Thing I've Ever Seen
I've never seen Cowboy Bebop until this year and In seeing all of this through new eyes. The villain in this episode is absolutely terrifying in his obsessive ruthlessness...but then the twist comes and he's suddenly the saddest person you've ever laid eyes on and the only thing that changes is your knowledge of him. It broke my heart to see a maniacal man described as a child that could never be fixed. Spike NEEDS to kill him to save his own skin but the viewer doesn't want him to. That's good writing and excellent direction on par for a legendary show.
Sarah Cooper: Everything's Fine (2020)
"Orgies: Maybe Later"
The only joke that legitimately made me laugh was the line: "Orgies, maybe later" then you hear in the background "aw, man." Get it? Because COVID? Yes, we get it, 2020 has been a firestorm of bad from beginning to end but it doesn't make for an entertaining comedy special. The talk show setting didn't land and devolved into
an ending that David Lynch would find confusing.
Even the guest appearances from comedy geniuses like Ben Stiller and Jane Lynch couldn't save it. How can you bring such funny people in and make them the least memorable aspect? Maybe this isn't Sarah's fault entirely, maybe it's just the writers she (or, let's be honest, Netflix) hired that failed. For instance, you'd think a joke about "Karens" should be like shooting fish in a barrel but Jane Lynch couldn't salvage the dumb premise and weak punchline referencing the lady in Central Park who called the cops on that guy who was baiting her dog.
Clearly either Sarah or the overlords at Netflix couldn't decide on a premise and decided to do everything. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. A complete waste of time. Do better, Netflix.
George of the Jungle (1997)
Silly but holds up since my childhood
I watched this movie all the time as a kid and haven't seen it since I was ten. It's definitely made for kids but I understand far more of the jokes as an adult. The comedy isn't necessarily high-brow, there's a lot of slapstick humor (George falling off things, hitting trees), but if you don't take it too seriously, it's enjoyable for kids and adults especially with the 90s styles and technology dating it significantly, adding an unintended layer of humor ("Ursula, I found your scrunchie"). The bridge-swing scene still thrills me.
