The Boys in the Boat (2023)
It was good, but could have been GREAT!
First of all the movie isn't bad. I liked it...BUT...it could have been so, so, much better had the director not rushed it. Come on George...why did you start the movie with Joe in College and not his younger years? Of course, you can't fit everything in the book into a 2-hour movie but you should strive to give the characters and events enough backstory and context so that each scene, action, or relationship is out of the blue. This movie would have been better if it had been turned into a streaming mini-series. This would have given enough time for the story to unfold. What's not shown in the movie at all is Joe's struggles and how harsh his childhood was. Not only did his Dad and stepmom leave him behind when he was 15, but at age 10 he was sent to live at a schoolhouse when he was 10 and work to earn his keep (all because his high maintenance violin playing stepmom didn't like him). What is also missing is some of the interactions and background information about the boys he rowed with.
Didn't care for the beginning or ending scenes of the modern day. They did nothing for the movie.
Again- not a bad movie, but it seemed to be pieced together from a longer, bigger movie.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Is this the future?
I suppose its absurdity was meant to make it seem clever but this movie is just outright bad. The action sequences are ok, the acting is bad, and the script was written by a couple of immature teenagers who think adult toys make for comic relief. I can only thank God that I watched this for free on NETFLIX in this universe but there is some poor shmuck version of me in another universe that paid to see this in a theater. All I can say is...please, please, do yourself a favor and avoid this travesty at all costs. I hope this is not the future of movies, but if Hollywoke keeps going in this direction I'm sure it will be. The only thing I can look forward to is possibly seeing the movie reviewed by Space Ice.
Boy Swallows Universe (2024)
Goonies' meets 'Sons Of Anarchy... minus the Goonies
I am not one to read a book, especially if there's a movie or television version, even if it's nothing like the book (e.g., The Shinning). With that said, after watching this limited series I'm actually interested in reading the book (or at least find the audible version). With all that filler said I found this to be one of the most interesting things I've watched lately. Strip away the humor and the implied precognition and you have a very good movie with very dark and serious undertones. I don't know if it's because I grew up in the 80s but I find shows set in the 80s to be a lot more enjoyable than anything set into today's "no fun" "over sensitive safe-space" "me me me" world that we living in.
Fool Me Once (2024)
I was the fool
Wow...talk about Kitsch. I hope to heck this isn't representative of what we can expect for 2024. If that's the case then I'm just watching old reruns. Twists and turns don't mean just making up an ending that makes you want to punch something after realizing all the time you just wasted. I hope this show was a huge departure from the original story. If not, then I don't see myself reading any Harlan Coben books. It also helps to have lead characters who are believable. I guess NETFLIX thought Maya would be their answer to Reacher but boy does it fall short. This actress made the character as hard as rice cakes. After watching this show I just had to vent.
Monstrous (2020)
I think they mean Monotonous
Holy cow was this a dumpster fire. I gave one star for a story that had potential and another star for the silhouetting of the creature. Mistakenly I thought seeing the creature with only backlighting was a buildup to a grand reveal but I was wrong. The effect was to mask a really crappy costume and the one time you do see the face and very plastic looking foot you wish you hadn't. I don't know if the movie was just edited bad but it felt like it jumped around. I'll go ahead and say it was edited bad, why not, everything else about this was a bad. The acting...Bad, the Sound...Bad, the story development...Bad. I guess the director thought that if you just showed two chicks getting it on then all is is forgiven.
We Found Bigfoot (2023)
You just have to imagine
I really don't want to sound like a Troll, but to get through this video you first have to accept that you're watching a video on par with your kid in their first school play, a show that qualifies for MST3000, or an Ed Wood movie. The dialog and its delivery is so forced it's painful and the acting is so stiff you'd think they hired lumber. The comparison to a porn flick was pretty accurate except with this flick its the viewer who gets screwed. Fun Blooper Fact: In the video our intrepid BF Hunters hike many hours into the forest but had they just started from the highway with traffic accidently captured in scene 1:05:00 when Rock Lobster (I mean Rock Thompson) is running away from the guy in the Gorilla Costume they would have saved a lot of time. I think in the end this is a movie that was thrown together to make some quick bucks from die hard Bigfoot enthusiast, like me, who'll just watch anything with the name Bigfoot in it. If you want to watch this movie, you need a good imagination. Primarily you just have to imagine it's good.
Beyond Paradise (2023)
We're not in St. Marie any more
I really like the evolution of the Paradise brand. Don't get me wrong I still love the island life but I like seeing progression of DI Goodman. In fact It would be cool to have all of the inspectors cross paths, but of course Ben Miller (the OG DI) was written off is the worst way to prevent this (Boooo Writers, Boo). I really like how the show puts him in the events when he's describing what happened. The jury is still out on the supporting cast. His DS is fine but the other two back in the station have not got my vote yet. At least in Death in Paradise all the supporting cast had really good characters that even had their own development. But Overall...Good Job I really enjoyed this.
04/04/2023- Update After watching the last episode I changed my rating from a 9 to a 10. Ending the season back in his old stomping grounds was a home run. I hope to hell there is a Season 2-5.
White Noise (2022)
What did I just watch?
I would say don't confuse this with the 2005 film of the same name but to not be confused while watching this movie is a tall order. The entire time I kept waiting for the movie to tie everything together and make more sense, but it just never happened. The acting was good, the dialog was quirky and almost fun; Still it just didn't fit. The end scene in the hotel did keep me on edge but like everything else in the movie it didn't go anywhere. The movie went way out of its way to make almost pointless plot points happen. I won't give anything away but it involves his profession, the need to learn German just so the ending takes place in a hospital staffed by all German atheist nuns. The "Airborne Toxic Event" was interesting but absolutely a waste of time. If you wanted to give him a terminal condition just to address the issues of death- they could have just given him a terminal illness during a visit to the doctor's office. Wikipedia calling this an absurdist comedy drama was spot on. I want to say don't waste your time but like the plane crash at the NZ airshow you can't not watch.
Year of the Rabbit (2019)
Run Rabbit Run
I knew I was going to love this show within the opening scene as Rabbit conducts a brutal police interrogation and even gets a bloody, tear filled confession only for us to learn this was a demonstration in front of school children with the teacher being interrogated. Hilarious! Then we get to meet Joseph Merrick (aka The Elephant Man) who would take this show's rating up to eleven if he was only featured every episode. The show does a tremendous job with a of the characters and the comedy is brilliant (and sometimes subtitle). My biggest regret is there is only one season. Hopefully, with enough positive reviews a second one will be on the way.
Bad Sisters (2022)
He couldn't die soon enough
What an excellent show. Great storyline, great acting, and a great ending. It kept me guessing until the end. Hats off to Claes Bang for his role. I've never seen a character who couldn't get killed soon enough. Not because his acting was bad, but rather he made JP so despicable that I kept wanting to jump to the part where he gets killed. Then was the who done it aspect. I was surprised to find out. I'll say hats off to Brian Gleeson for his part too. You couldn't hate the guy but you didn't want to see him win either. Thankfully the writers scored a win-win for everyone. Do yourself a favor and watch this show.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
3 more stars if Sauron wipes the Harfoots off the face of middle earth
Amazon did a great job with the series (Good job Jeff)! However there is one group of characters the show would be better off without and that's the show's boat anchor known as the Harfoots. All the other characters' storylines are watchable, and then we have these boring communal gypsies. Five shows in and I don't see how these flower power Hobbits' story line cross paths with all the others. Just write them out of the show and we can enjoy the series. The only hook they have is that giant who landed like a meteor. Is he the start of the wizards? Don't know, and at the pace they keep showing this character it'll be over before we know what he really is. Remember we can't compare this to the House of the Dragon- They have much better acting and plot but this show is faster paced and more vivid. Here's to hoping the writers read reviews and kill off the Harfoots!
Severance (2022)
In the style of Twilight Zone, Lost meets,13 Monkeys, Fight Club...I'm not sure
I can't put my finger on a comparable show, but maybe that's why it's so good. From the camera angles, dated equipment, furniture, dialog, and the out of the blue WTF moments, you feel like it all is leading you somewhere that you want to see, but aren't quite sure what you'll find. In a strange way you can see a lot of todays workplace in the show, or at least I see a lot of where I work in the show, though I never received a 5 minute music dance experience. I'm sure severance isn't for everyone, and might be an acquired watch but if you give it a chance you won't be sorry. If anything you'll have a new appreciation for your work/life balance.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Minusaurus
Minus 1 star for bringing back old characters and putting them in cheesy situations, minus 1 star for some annoying new actors who did nothing for this movie, minus 5 stars for a crap storyline, and 3 stars for Laura Dern and her bad, bad acting.
They should have stopped with the first movie and let it be a "classic". Instead Hollywood kept punching out half-hearted storylines that culminates into the most ridiculous swan song that tried to highlight all problems in society, to include Laura Dern and her need to preach. My God, has this woman ever been in a movie where she didn't come off as a smug, self-important Hollywood activist? I just feel bad for Chris Pratt and Sam Neill who have to be associated with this as part of their legacy. So here I go trying to get another 200 characters so I can post this review. Not saying anything else. You pretty much know how I feel about the franchise by now. It only took 29 years for this franchise to go extinct when it should have been only one!
Prey (2022)
Hits and Misses
I gave this 5/10 because there were some things I liked and some things I think really missed the mark.
It had the feel of the first movie but it pretty much stopped there. If I had watched it in the Comanche dub I probably would have added a star for a more "realistic" feel. There's something about first Nations People saying "I'm going to take a squat" or "bring it home" that really takes something away. I liked the music but it really had a Last of the Mohicans feel to it.
The CGI left a lot to be desired- The bear, mountain lion, and Predator jumping from tree to tree really made it hard to watch.
It's a good watch on a rainy day.
Evil (2019)
Was interesting until it went Political
I really liked the show until they started pushing political themes. I knew they jumped the shark when they tried to show how cops are now "evil" and how racial intolerance is lurking in the hearts of all men. Why can't shows just be about entertainment?
Snowflake Mountain (2022)
Very Necessary
It's great to see young people have personal growth. This show is a fresh breath of air and so much better than 90 day this, or real house wives that...
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
The show relies too much on the force instead of acting
A mediocre story can survive if you have good dialogue delivered by good acting. Sadly Disney went on the cheap and turned it into a real Sith show. Just like Episode III, Ewan McGregor is the ONLY one with the acting chops to make it worth watching. For all the others, well, let's just say only a Jedi Mind Trick will make me believe they're any good.
Dune (2021)
Acting on Par with Star Wars III
Great effects and bad dialog enforced by mediocre acting. My biggest complaint is the choice of Timothée Chalamet. This actor is as bad as Hayden Christensen in Star Wars.
Something in the Woods (2015)
B-Movie with an A for effort
Fortunately for the movie I love all things Bigfoot. Sasquatch may be real, it may only be a legend and IMO most "eyewitness accounts" are overt fictitious accounts to get 5 seconds of notoriety. Still, I love the subject and movies like this are fun to watch (albeit a little painful, LOL). The acting speaks for itself so I'm not going to even comment on it. I actually thought the editing was on par with bigger budget productions so that's a plus. I did like the story and in the end that's all that matters.
Don Verdean (2015)
A rare find
Found this gem of a movie while trying to find something on Netflix. Jared Hess was able to bring the same quirky (but great) feel of his previous movies. Clearly the inspiration for the character was from the biblical artifact hunter Ron Wyatt.
Designated Survivor (2016)
Not at all what I thought it would be
I've always liked the Kiefer Sutherland's acting and was eager to watch this series. I thought this would be a series of a man, clearly over his head assuming the highest office of the land, yet dealing with all the troubles that goes with it but instead It was nothing more than a political platform of the Democrats disguised as a drama. I watch TV series to be entertained, not to be manipulated.
The Lion King (2019)
Maybe if you've never seen the original...
I was blown away by the visual effects, during the first scenes I thought they were real animals. For me the movie was ruined when I heard the character's speak and especially when I heard them sing. It just didn't hold a candle to the original. Sorry Disney I wanted to like it and probably would have except I saw the original.
