The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Cop-out ending compromises a good show
What happened? This was quite a strong show with a good cast and involving drama, but the last episode was a complete cop-out. The evil, vile house turned into a temple of healing and forgiveness, some kind of new-agey therapy center. In some other kind of a show this would be permissible, even touching, but here...
Well, to point out the highlights: the shock revelation of episode 5 (The Bent-Neck Lady) was really innovative, and episode 6 (Two Storms) was all in all a fine excercise in cinematic (or televisual) use of space and time.
Pimeys odottaa (1985)
Finnish film noir pastiche from the 80's
A Finnish film noir pastiche from Kaurismäki "clan" member Pauli Pentti. Screenplay by Pentti and film critic Antti Lindqvist follows a young man (Pekka Valkeejärvi), who gets tangled in a web woven by a businessman and a corrupt police detective and concerning a night club singer (Riitta Havukainen). Stylized dialogue and laconic presentation bear a strong Kaurismäki signature. Then brand-new Helsinki subway system is a backdrop for many scenes, while the trench coats characters wear allude to the worlds of Humphrey Bogart and Jean-Pierre Melville. Somewhat thin and very short, this is still quite enjoyable exercise for fans of Finnish cinema.
