Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable (2017)
"Wreck" is Right
I'll give kudos to the actual film crew for a cinematically beautiful piece of fiction, but anyone promoting this as a documentary should be sued for false advertising. While I'll admit that most of the actual sculptures are lovely pieces of art, the artist failed miserably to capture historical accuracy in the styles he attempted to replicate. The medusa head genuinely gave me the impression Harry Hamlin had just dropped it. If you like mockumentaries with good production quality, you might enjoy giving up an hour and twenty minutes of your life to this flick. Otherwise, don't waste your time.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
A great start - for those who can afford to watch.
The first two episodes of Star Trek Discovey did not disappoint. The storyline brought us back into a time in Star Trek lore that had yet to be explored. As with any new show, I expect it will take a few episodes for the characters to develop their complexities, quirks, and relationships between one another. What I've seen so far, though, holds great promise. Production quality and music were worthy of the big screen. Without spoiling anything, I have to say the pilot episodes set the stage well for the rest of the series. Gene Roddenberry would be proud.
The only thing wrong with Star Trek Discovery is that CBS chose to limit the availability of this great show to those with the budget and ability to watch via broadband stream. For that, Mr. Roddenberry would be sadly disappointed. I would strongly encourage them to reconsider the limited availability of this show. They should at least make it available on demand (for cable/satellite viewers), at no extra charge, a few weeks after the original broadcast date, then over the air a little later in the season. Star Trek should be enjoyed by all who love it - not just those who can afford it.
Pin Up Girl (1944)
Entertaining fluff, but disappointing
Astaire & Rogers it's not. While it was somewhat entertaining fluff, it had few other redeeming qualities. The costumes were ridiculous, distracting and very unflattering. And unfortunately, there really wasn't anything significantly original in the storyline itself. The final number, while impressive in its precision, lacked variety and musical interest, and consequently became boring very quickly, as the same moves were repeated over and over again. One very notable exception was the performance by Frank & Harry Condos (as The Condos Brothers). Their dancing was exceptional and dazzling to watch. If you're looking for simple fluff and diversion - enjoy. Just don't set your expectations too high.
