The Bay (2019)
Season 1 review - passable only
Unfortunately I can't say this is a great UK crime drama. I like smarter and more challenging crime drama. The decisions/actions of many of the characters were irrational and beyond belief at times, and especially how the main character handled her conflict of interest that was evident from the start. I find teenage angst and melodrama tedious and there's a lot of that. Most characters are unlikeable as well. I really only persisted as I like to know "whodunnit" once I start watching something. I might watch Season 2 to see if it improves but reviews for Season 3 aren't good so won't watch that far.
Departure (2019)
Season 3 - terrible
I watched Season 1 and 2 and don't remember them being this bad. The acting is over done with characters charging around. There's also an excessive and quite ridiculous number of extras scurrying around in the background, eg on the dock. Two stars only because Archie Punjabi provides some redemption - although they seem to have a filter over her close up scenes (similar to a 1950s movie) which is very obvious when there's a switch between characters. To me it resembles a bad midday movie. I seem to remember the earlier seasons had more of a British feel to them (I like UK dramas) and unfortunately this does not.
Ridley (2022)
Worth watching
I enjoyed this series and found some of the storylines genuinely moving (especially the first episode) and was in tears several times. I love UK crime dramas and have watched many others and thought this was a worthy effort.
I also enjoyed the musical aspect. The songs were chosen well and enhanced or reflected the storylines. I also enjoyed the mellow performances in contrast to other reviews.
This may appeal more to older viewers (like me ;)) as it deals with life and loss of mature characters.
There are many familiar and reputable faces in the cast.
I hope there is a follow up series and would happily watch further episodes.
