Before Sunrise (1995)
Really enjoyed it...but I don't buy it
I found the thoughts brought up in this movie fascinating. The screenwriter obviously put a lot of thought into philosophical issues and many of the characters' thought, were ones that he had had. In this sense the movie was so true. It was also true in the way it was executed. The way the actors spoke to eachother was relaxed and realistic - true to life. I just felt that in real life people, whether they be twenty three or seventy three, don't go around spewing all of the deep thoughts they have had to random people on the train and if they do, that isn't all they talk about! I really loved the ideas the characters had and they made me think, but I don't buy the fact that these characters had that many thoughts of their own. And if two people spent twenty four consecutive hours only discussing the meaning of the world and the like, they would be mentally exausted! Their pseudo-intellectual comments became eccessive at times. But this is not to say that I didn't enjoy the film. It was very beautiful in its simplicity and a joy to watch.
Great Performances: The Rimers of Eldritch (1972)
Lanford Wilson at his best
My class is putting on a production of this play so we watched the film. The film keeps the same story and characters as Lanford Wilson's play. The cast is interesting, one is able to see a few famous faces such as a young Susan Sarandon as Patsy Johnson and Rue McClanahan as Cora Groves. I thought they acted very well. The two characters that I thought were best portrayed were Mary Windrod and Skelly Manor. The actors playing them captured the roles very well and realistically. I did not however like the actress who played Eva Jackson. I thought she made her too young and at times mentally challenged. She's fourteen and immature, not retarded! All in all the film is good, but I suggest reading the play or seeing a production of it. You would probably enjoy it more.
The Taming of the Shrew (1976)
Works perfectly
It is amazing how perfectly this production works. I love how it is presented in the form of commedia dell'arte. Each role fits as one of the commedia stock characters and the director makes great use of the lazzi of the comic business. It is very cleverly done. The acting is great as well. I think Petruchio and Kate made it seem natural that they fell in love, when it seems kind of sudden when you just read the play. Kate handled the hand beneath the foot scene very well (the words in that scene usually make me cringe!)It is a nearly flawless production that is a great way to show just how much fun Shakespeare really can be!
