Dynasty: There's No One Around to Watch You Drown (2022)
There's No One Around to Watch You Drown
Well you know, except the fans watching this pathetic excuse for reboot of Dynasty, an iconic soap that pushed women in business and drama in the 80's to a whole new level. The first two seasons were so amazing and well realised. So many missteps and obvious wrong choices made this season- while I've been been watching the past few episodes they are so obvious to any genuine fans of the source material or first two seasons, yet instead the most interesting storyline and characters are still getting sidelined. I genuinely don't care enough to finish this review. I can't wait when the reboot ends so it can stop disrespecting the hard work Sallie put in the first two seasons, the OG, and anyone who worked on either to bring these amazing characters and stories to life. If Steven doesn't come back, then these writers truely haven't got a clue, nor care about the fans or immense impact the character has had on our society.
Dynasty: My Family, My Blood (2022)
My Family, My Blood
After last weeks travesty of an episode, this one fairs much better, but still- not by much. At this point in the game everything feels tired and worn out. Not just the characters (particularly Sam and Culhane) but the storyline's, namely Alexis and Adam's. The only times I was engaged was with Cristal and Fallon (who have been massively neglected since Daniella joined the show) and Ben's storyline with Dominique and Blake, which of all the storyline's has the most potential, yet is still getting the least amount of screentime. It doesn't make sense. A lot of what happens doesn't make sense. It's why I barely care enough to watch the episode live, or at all, let alone leave a review anymore.
Dynasty: Vicious Vendetta (2022)
Vicious Vendetta
What a show stopping episode! This episode got so much right, starting with the fact that the episode title was actually spoken! Not to mention Stevens acknowledgement and everyone's favourite crazy lady is back! And that cliffhanger- finally another S2 worthy cliffhanger, Ben Carrington. This is the type of drama I have been waiting for ever since Rita left. It seems to be obvious to everyone but the writers that the best storyline's are the ones adapted from the original. Stopping me from giving it a perfect 10 is the lack of catfight, no book of secrets mention from Kirby and no Caress..... but hopefully they are all rectified when the show returns for its next episode. LexDex completely stole the episode though, and Blake and Alexis actually having civilised scenes between the chaos, it felt like I was watching the OG. Overall, an amazing 100th episode, and I can't wait to see what trouble Ben and Claudia stir up.
Dynasty: Do You Always Talk to Turtles (2022)
Do You Always Talk to Turtles
Such an improvement over last weeks episode! The only thing stopping me from giving it a perfect 10/10 is that the episode title wasn't spoken in the episode. It's a small thing, but something that goes a long way. Obviously the peak of this episode was Cristal and Fallons scenes. It was so refreshing and needed having these two characters actually interact. They shared such an integral storyline in the OG and it only feels like now we are having their relationship develop. Not to mention, Liz and Daniella acted the hell out of their scenes together. It would be such a missed opportunity and I would be extremely disappointed if we don't have more scenes with them in the future. The stepmom/ stepdaughter relationship is one I hope is strengthened by the final episode. Next, that cliffhanger! Finally a S2 worthy cliffhanger! I loved how dark, yet funny it was. Dynasty is a drama, so when the show actually has some stakes and maturity it can thrive! Out of all things I want to continue into the final episodes of the series, it's that it stays a mature, business drama with high stakes and death!
Dynasty: There's No Need to Panic (2022)
There's No Need To Panic
Definitely a big step down compared to last weeks episode, but there was still enough done right to not completely write the episode off. Firstly, Adam and Amanda's rivalry continues to be a massive strength for this season. It's thoroughly entertaining to see both characters raise the stakes higher and higher, and I hope the writers can deliver for when their feud comes crashing down. Although Kirby should have been written off a couple seasons ago, the Amanda and Kirby pairing is at least giving her some purpose. I hope Alexis is right though, and they make Kirby the antagonist she is most interesting as. It's time for the book of secrets storyline to come back, dumb model Kirby is the most boring Kirby. Of course it was amazing to finally get some more Dex and Alexis scenes- and a proposal! Even though I can count all of Dex's appearances on one hand..... he really should have appeared more. Hopefully that is a mistake that is fixed in 5B. Finally, Daniella Alonso is yet again proving why she deserves better material and more presence, whether tutoring Adam or commanding the board room, Cristal is a vital character which is doing what Fallon is constantly trying to and failing at: Running a successful business and marriage, while helping her family when they need it most. Cristal is by far the breakout star of S5 and I hope it continues in the episodes to come.
Dynasty: I'll Settle for a Prayer (2022)
I'll Settle For A Prayer
Wow. I didn't think Dynasty was ever going to be able to surprise me again, but here we are. 5x11 could easily be argued the best of the season along with 5x01 and 5x02 due to its such high level of drama and craft. India had such a rich understanding of what makes Dynasty tick, between the delightful action of having a character say the episode title within the episode (this needs to continue!), the maturity and weight the episode held as it discussed abuse, regret, and the mistakes of the past. Plus, keeping the level of quality of writing Iris received in the first season in this episode. That is no easy feat. That's not even mentioning an amazing Steven mention and actual character development for Sam. His storyline with Daniel and Iris is the most interesting his character has been since Steven left, not surprising since it's an OG storyline after all. What is surprising however is the lack of OG as this season has progressed. The season started so strong with Rita, Dex and Daniel but now it's like we're back to ignoring the original. I desperately hope that isn't the case. Before Dynasty is finished, Steven, Monica and Claudia need to be brought back just as Iris did. They are integral, legacy characters to the show and it can't be finished without bringing them all back in some capacity. Not to mention, we still need to see Caress or Sable, even if it's for an episode. They could easily be tied to the Roger Grimes storyline so that the reboot can end just as the OG did!
Dynasty: Mind Your Own Business (2022)
Mind Your Own Business
If Liam says "let's make a baby" one more time I'll stop watching. Who's decision was it to make Dynasty a fan fiction? The best thing about this episode was finally having a break from Kirby. If only Culhane could leave aswell. In what world would Dominique and Alexis have less presence then those two insignificant filler characters who should have left seasons ago? All the women in this episode were just embarrassing. Seriously, how could an 80's show write for Alexis and Dominique better than a 2022 show. It feels like Season 3 all over again, destroying all the work Season 4 did to fix these characters. These past few episodes have been so bad it's distracting. We rushed Rita out the door for this? No plots are engaging, storyline's are rushed... It feels like a sitcom. What happened to Dynasty?
Dynasty: A Friendly Kiss Between Friends (2022)
A Friendly Kiss Between Friends
I want to preface by saying I love seeing lesbian representation on this show and Amanda is the perfect character to bring that, however, Kirby is right in saying that she herself is just a "dumb model", that is the whole character, she ran her course seasons ago and has since lost all bite. Same with Culhane. Their contribution is non existent. Why Kirby isn't blackmailing the Carrington's is beyond me, and I would hate to see Amanda riddled down to "one half of the lesbian couple" since Kirby has no ties or connections to the story, Amanda would constantly have to share all her scenes with her in an attempt to keep her relevant, which we can see starting to happen now, and has happened with Liam. It's saddening to see how much filler Dynasty has, as nothing big happened this episode it seemed far more interested in being "funny" than dramatic. Dynasty was always meant to have comedic undertones with business and drama leading at all times, but recently its disheartening to see that switch occurring of comedy seemingly always being the most important thing. Dex and Dominique were absent, and since they bring a lot of the charm and drama to the show it's not surprising that this episode felt so empty. I have to say, I would much rather be learning more about Dex than watching Kirbys modelling and love triangle. I hope the show can refind its footing in the next episode...
Dynasty: The Only Thing That Counts Is Winning (2022)
The Only Thing That Counts Is Winning
Second chances, which was obviously the theme of this episode, feels almost aptly ironic after how many chances I've given this season. Please, PLEASE someone explain to me the relevance of Kirby and Culhanes characters? Where are Steven, Monica or Claudia? Not to mention Alexis says she only has three children... huh? This coupled with the fact that we still don't know if Dynasty will have another season, it should have been obvious from the start to write Culhane and Kirby off the series. Alexis and Dex, as usual, made this episode interesting and Amanda having a storyline with what it means to be a Carrington was also great. The Amanda and Cristal scene is exactly what this show is missing. Cristal was the moral compass in the OG and we should have more scenes of her helping her step children and being someone they can trust, even if that means not trusting their own father. Dynasty is also lacking a central storyline that spans majority of the season and involves most of the characters. In S1 it was CA, in S2 it was Atlantix. In S5, what are we fighting for? Blake and Alexis aren't even competing. Flores Inc should be going against a LexDex company with all the kids stuck in the middle choosing sides. There have just been so many missed opportunities so far. I really don't know how many "second chances" I can give without some fixes to the blatant issues I listed above. Moldavian Massacre anyone?
Dynasty: A Real Actress Could Do It (2022)
A Real Actress Could Do It
Like last weeks episode, this one is also all over the shop. Firstly, it's amazing to see Alexis and Dex back again, even though Dominique and Adam are gone again.... I hope to see more of Dex's layers and even a physical fight like the OG with Alexis would be a good way to seperate the couple from everyone else. Fallon and Jeff's storyline was also solid and the two's main storyline should be working together to make Morell a global energy empire. Sam, Blake and Daniel is definitely a surprise hit. The OG nods are there but this journey is new and I'm here for it, although a Steven mention could've definitely been used. Cristal and Alexis storyline was entertaining, although childish. The two need many more scenes together, but a level of maturity, and preferably taking place in a board room, would be far more entertaining for everyone, and authentic to the characters. I do hope to see more ramifications of the Rita storyline in future episodes since it came to such a grinding halt last week. Some of you may be wondering what Culhane did this episode- nothing, per normal. Just ate food at a table and made funny faces at Fallon... So again, why is he here? Same could be said for Kirby. I'm thrilled to see a lesbian romance on the show, but introducing Dana (an OG character who was Adams childhood love) and making her bisexual, and putting her in the middle of both Adam and Amanda would have been far more interesting. Kirby has equally run her course like Culhane. Seeing Alexis be mad that her child is dating Kirby has been done before. I don't care about Kirbys acting/ modelling career, I don't care about her agent. I care about the blackmail plot which is no where to be found. Dynasty needs something new and exciting to happen, Rita was exactly that but ended too soon. Claudia, Laura or even Sable would provide what the show is currently lacking.
Dynasty: Devoting All of Her Energy to Hate (2022)
Devoting All Of Her Energy To Hate
I'm not going to say this is the first bad episode we've had this season, because it was still solid and enjoyable. However some creative choices have left me scratching my head and I just can't ignore them. Firstly, the elephant in the room, or maybe the doppelgänger in the room is more fitting... This storyline ended far too quickly, as was the catfight. Both should have been longer. And I just have a hard time justifying why you would rush it when we are stuck with the filler quadfactor (and you know which four characters it is) and their filler storyline's every episode. Speaking of which, Alexis and Dex are gone again- as is Adam! And Dominique! What is that? These are easily the best characters we have and they aren't even in every episode. It becomes more evident by the episode that the filler characters need to go, so we can get the good characters in every episode. Morell storyline was good aswell, I hope it sticks around and becomes Fallon's main business, as she is much more interesting in energy than...magazine stuff?
Dynasty: A Little Fun Wouldn't Hurt (2022)
Finally a big episode cliffhanger!
This is what made the first two seasons work so well. There was love, appreciation, nods and homages to the OG in every episode and many scenes of dialogue. Rita is an absolute scene stealer, I am a bit worried where the OG made the storyline last too long, the reboot will end it too quickly, but so far it's the best storyline of the season! Tied with Dex and Alexis (who are sadly absent). Even Dominique and Jeffs storyline is very enticing, and the catfight was a great nod to the OG. Every Dynasty forum i go on talks about the filler characters, and they were really bad this episode. I don't want to get too into it but it's pretty obvious at this point some need to be written off. Would have been 10/10 if not for their unnecessary inclusion.
Dynasty: How Did the Board Meeting Go? (2022)
A good David Israel episode?
Well done David, you definitely took me by surprise by this one. Kudos to you 👏🏽. I hope this a sign that filler dream/ holiday/ theme segments are a thing of the past. Finally after years of waiting Dex is here, and exactly what I wanted. I do wish the jail storyline lasted a little longer, there seems to be no more overarching storyline's anymore...
Dynasty: That Holiday Spirit (2021)
An amazing follow up to the premiere
All the OG nods had me giddy. Also, TWO Steven mentions- now that's what I call an early Christmas gift. Everything is being set up so well and the show is firing on all cylinders. Hopefully it can keep this momentum. I hope the future of the show has more business Alexis. That's probably my biggest gripe. It feels like Culhane and Kirby are just filler and wasting screen time. Their stories really need to be wrapped up so we can have more new characters. I loved Anders, but it was the best decision to replace him with Amanda who is completely elevating the show to a whole new level. Michael Michele also proved how talented she is. Reminded me so much of Diahann Carroll. I hope she and Alexis are both in every episode this season.
Dynasty: Let's Start Over Again (2021)
What a start!
So much to dissect here! An amazing season opener with shocking, engaging and intriguing storyline's for everyone. Amanda is a scene stealer and the best decision this show has made in a long time. The dialogue and directing were all perfection. The characters feel so much more authentic and mature compared to their jokey, nonsensical versions we've gotten earlier. I'm disappointed there's no Dex, but fingers crossed he's around the corner after Alexis' trial. Even better than S4 and if the show can continue to elevate and honour the OG it may just reach the levels of the first season! This is what every Dynasty episode should be like...
Dynasty: Filled with Manipulations and Deceptions (2021)
Good. But I wanted more.
This is Dynasty. A reboot from an OG soap which ushered in the next era of drama, power, greed and has inspired and continued to inspire numerous forms of media entertainment. I just feel like it's playing it way too safe and not taking any risks. I don't feel the stakes on the show- and how can I when my favourite characters, Dominique, Alexis, Cristal, Blake and even Amanda and Adam are all taking the backseat to Fallon and Liam. My patience for them grew very thin this season, but due to the last two episodes, I was more invested than before. However, I don't see how they can continue to lead this show. Cristal and Blake, or even Alexis and Dex (who is sorely missed and needed badly for the show) can take their place. Kirby had a promising start this season- becoming more antagonist due to her substance abuse storyline, and following in the footsteps of Sammy Jo from the original, which was a great place to take a character who hasn't had anything going for her in a long time. With the help of her book of Carrington secrets, I hope she really brings down the hammer next season, otherwise why keep her around? Speaking of which, Culhane's storyline was done long ago, I wish he would just go so Alexis can get more screen time. We don't know the outcome of what happened, but Alexis needs to become more business savvy, and I think she needs ColbyCo to do so. If she doesn't have a business to drive her she will end up going in circles as a character for the rest of the series. The directing of the finale was really a superb job. Kudos to the cast and crew for pushing through the pandemic. I just hope next season has more drama and stakes.
Dynasty: Affairs of State and Affairs of the Heart (2021)
Thankfully, a much better episode
The drama was consistent and engaging all throughout the episode, which is a plus and necessity for Dynasty. Amanda was missed but thankfully Alexis brought some good drama and shade. This is the most interesting Falliam have been in a long long time, and since the drama was actually interesting I didn't mind them taking centre stage, but the pair pale in comparison as characters to Amanda, Alexis, Dominique, Blake and Cristal. When your characters get boring, your show gets boring. And a lot of the other characters stopped being interesting a long time ago. However, the final scenes that recapped everyone's storyline's before heading into the finale is true Dynasty. That level of drama needs to be in every episode. The original show is the greatest soap of all time, episodes like 4x04, 4x19 and 4x20 make a mockery of that. Episodes like 4x13, 4x17 and this episode actually make me remember why I fell in love with this show in S1.
Dynasty: You Vicious, Miserable Liar (2021)
Absolutely boring
What is this? Because it's not Dynasty. Only Cristal's storyline, and Amanda's storyline felt authentic to the show. If Steven wasn't mentioned the episode would be voted even lower. I am so sick of Kirby, Sam and Culhane taking the spotlight. Alexis is so much better and yet she isn't even in the episode? The younger cast needs some trimming because oh my god was that L. A storyline boring as hell, and just basically a rehash of the S2 ski trip, which also got tiring fast. As far as I'm concerned, Culhane, Kirby and Jeff have all run out of story. The only reason to keep Sam is for Steven, and who knows when that's going to happen. This episode is a direct evidence of more cast needing to go and new characters. Dex, Steven, Laura, Monica, Caress- it doesn't matter, but the character roster needs a shake up ASAP, because Fallon is no longer the independent badass business woman carrying the show, just a weak pathetic excuse for a character. Dynasty is business drama. Not a romantic comedy. How many times does that need to be repeated? Every episode should be like 4x17, which is still the best of the season.
Dynasty: Everything Looks Wonderful, Joseph (2021)
Great episode besides the gimmick
First off, Fallon and Liam are so boring. Why Alexis and Dominique get less scenes then them I don't understand, because they were amazing. Once again, every characters storyline was interesting except Fallon and Liam. When will Dynasty just stop with the music and themed episodes and gimmicks. To this episode's credit, it was far better than the toddler entertainment black and white episodes, but still, this is supposed to be a mature business drama. Some amazing family scenes though, and Amanda is now my second favourite character. Only behind Steven.
Dynasty: A Good Marriage in Every Sense (2021)
A+ for strong women
A slow episode in the beginning but the drama near the end makes up for it. I can say majority of the characters storyline's interested me this episode except for Fallon and Liam. They both need a hard reset becuase I don't care what happens to either of them. Fallon and Liam should be focused on business, like Fallon last week. Season 3 ruined both their characters and when Dominique and Cristal are far more interesting this season who cares about Falliam.
Dynasty: Stars Make You Smile (2021)
Spoilers: Stars Make You Smile
The episode is simply off the charts. Fallon was an absolute badass which we haven't seen for a long time. Her rivalry with Collin was fresh and the perfect entertainment for Dynasty. Their dynamic reminds me of early Fallon and Jeff and it's refreshing to see Fallon not act so desperate and needy all the time. This was the Fallon that needs no man. The only thing she needs is herself, and at the end of the day she pulled one from out under him and I adored every second of it. Amanda is the perfect addition to the Dynasty world. Does she and Alexis need Dex? Oh hell yes. But Amanda was written very strong this episode and her ties to the original and the added cushion room in her character went a long way to help us understand this Amanda. Alexis was on fire, she was on top of her game, reminded me a lot of Nicollette's Alexis which always oozed strength and power. Alexis shouldn't be some weak bimbo who has her own podcast, she should have her own Dynasty and be duelling Blake's for his, and I got a sense that this Alexis is nearly there, and that made me very excited. Even Kirby and Culhane, who I think are useless characters and only eat up screen time and should leave the show, found a purpose here. There storyline's certainly peaked my interest and the dialogue went a long way to sell them aswell. Finally, the directing. I always know when it's a Michael Allowitz episode because there are actually interesting shots that catch my eye and stuff is actually happening with the camera. He always seems to get the best episodes, and I hope we get more of him next season.
Dynasty: The British Are Coming (2021)
Amanda!
Love that Amanda has finally made her debut on the show! Easy highlight of the episode!
Dynasty: She Lives in a Showplace Penthouse (2021)
Patiently waiting Amanda's arrival...
Fabulous episode. Funny, dramatic, and had good character pairings throughout. I have to be honest though, all I'm thinking about is Amanda. I've been waiting for a new OG character since S2 with Dominique! That's ridiculous that it's taken nearly two seasons. Dex better be right behind Amanda aswell! It would be a cataclysmic missed opportunity not too. It's criminal he hasn't shown up yet, and if it's the trouble of screen time, Kirby, Culhane, Liam and Sam have some to give... it's not like they are doing anything. And Dex, Steven, Caress and Sable would be much more interesting substitutes for them. Don't you agree?
Dynasty: The Birthday Party (2021)
Absolutely amazing
This is the perfect balance of drama, business and comedy. This feels like the Dynasty lacking in S3. Only complaint is Fallon singing, it doesn't belong on the show, it's out of place and is Liz only playing Fallon to further her music career? I mean why else keep the music.... Anyway, solid episode and can't wait to see what happens to Dominique and Alexis next, they steal the show!
Dynasty: Everybody Loves the Carringtons (2021)
Whoever wrote this episode should be fired on the spot
One of the stupidest ideas I have seen for this show, regardless, it still wins as worst episode of the series, somehow beating out the noir and musical episodes of last season. Whoever thought that this sitcom thing would work must be smoking something, because it's as bad as Aunt Alexis, house of devaruax or whatever nonsense it was called, and introducing Vanessa and leaving Monica out all into one for ludicrous and bad ideas!
