Revolution (2012)
Its good just not great.....
I've watched 2 episodes of this show and in Hollywood that might as well be a lifetime.
All and all, the show isn't bad and it is mildly entertaining but the pace of the show is dreadfully slow. I understand that the overall story of why the lights went off can't be revealed in 2 episodes but you've had 2 hours to get me hooked and all I have seen so far is a remake of a Kevin Costner movie, (Postman) which was awful might I add.
Keeping people interested in the mystery is a good idea and its worked for other shows (Lost, etc) but this show seems to be going the route of Heroes in the way it presents its shockers....a lot of build up for squat. I'm sorry if no one else got a weird Sylar vibe from this "Randall" dude then maybe I'm crazy.
The characters are fine if not slightly stupid in a world where everyone is killing each other. I understand they lived out in the middle of no where but they seem like buffoons stumbling from mishap to mishap. Honestly you left the guy handcuffed and didn't even mention you were being followed? WTF?
The hero is very uncharismatic and so is the main villain. They should honestly kill Monroe and put Giancarlo Esposito as the villain as he commands more respect and authority. I actually fear him compared to this dinky white guy. As for our hero Miles, I'm not blaming the actor or his portrayal but mostly the fact that they make him act like Snake Pliskin....he's ridiculous.
Everyone else is fine not great...but fine. Sets and sound are amazing and the overall feel of the show is neat albeit, too clean for a post apocalyptic world but oh well... The action is good but at times comes off a little Xena/Hercules type of action. With the sword fights and camera flashing in and out. Anybody else feel that?
One more little thing that bugs me is that I hope they ramp up the "Sci-fi" part of the show cause so far its more drama then anything else. That is a personal preference though not a big deal. I am a huge Fallout fan. *shrug*
So to wrap this up this little wall of text.... In the end its NBC and this show while has potential will NEVER reach it because the budget is probably fairly high compared to others and NBC expects every show to either be a smashing success or give it the boot. Sadly this show will be canceled. I have no doubt.
Hopefully in the long line of post-apocalyptic shows somebody with brains will see the potential and pick it up and actually go somewhere with this. Mark my words though...they NEED to kill Monroe...he does not demand respect or authority...hes kinda awful. Maybe its the actors fault or the script but something needs to change.
Merlin (2008)
Almost completely Magical...
Merlin is a wonderful fantasy/drama about the old legend of Merlin and Arthur. Now except Merlin being some old man with a cane it goes the route of Smallville and places him in the steps of when he first becomes of aware of his destiny & magic.
The show has wonderful cast and every casting is just about perfect, even in the minor roles that come from episode to episode. The acting is strong and even in the cheesy moments all the lines are delivered well, even for new and fresh young actors they stand toe to toe with the acting veterans in the show.
It has had its controversy over historical inaccuracies but that does not take away from the show in any way as it is a "re-imagining" to begin with. So don't expect your same old Merlin story here.
The only thing that does take away from the show is its bit of a problem with the special affects as it can seem a bit choppy and little out of place but this is probably due to budget constraints at this moment.
From episode to the next the show seems to get better and they seem to fit into their characters more and more. All and all Merlin is quite a magical show, pun intended.
