Ted Lasso (2020)
Simply Outstanding
I very rarely leave reviews but felt compelled to do so now for this feel good masterpiece. I never thought to watch this series because even though I'm English I'm not a fan of football. Watching Juno Temple's stellar performance in season 5 of Fargo was the impetus. And I am astounded at how good this series is and how much I enjoyed it. I had to ration my viewing of the last season to one episode per night because I just didn't want to leave the totally immersive world of Ted Lasso.
Without any doubt this is one of the most enjoyable television series I have ever watched. Entertaining, humorous, emotional, inspirational and thoroughly satisfying. It surprised the stuffing out of me how good it was and how much I enjoyed it.
Once Upon a Time in Londongrad (2022)
Tabloid journalism
This is an extremely poor documentary made by left wing Buzzfeed 'journalists', short on facts but long on opinions, including the baseless conclusion that all the deaths are attributable to Vladimir Putin personally. I know and have met several of the characters on whom the documentary focuses as well as some of the people who were interviewed for comments. For anyone who has followed these events, which took place more than a decade ago, there are no new revelations, which poses the question what have these 'journalists' been doing other than collating already published reports? It may be of interest to those who are unaware of these events, or to those who subscribe to the current Western narrative that Putin Bad (remember Orange Man Bad), but it's a complete waste of time for those with any knowledge of the actual events that took place. Cheap tabloid journalism at best.
Frontera Verde (2019)
Very different, very wonderful
If you have the attention span of a gnat or need to understand everything as it happens, if you are desirous of frenetic action and lots of cgi, or even if your preference would be for a series of the detective/whodunit genre, this might not be for you.
If you prefer to read books rather than magazines or comics, are interested in parts of the world which only a few are fortunate to have the opportunity to visit, different and mysterious cultures that live in parallel to our world, utterly beautiful landscapes and an intriguing and beguiling story told at the pace of all good stories, slowly with time to absorb everything that is happening, even if not all of it is explicable or even credible, if we must apply the standards of our own civilisation with its parlous level of spiritual awareness or knowledge, then I believe you will enjoy it. You might even think it outstanding.
Chapeau to Colombia for opening such a wonderful window on your country and affording us a mesmerising and very different perspective to that portrayed by Narcos.
