Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
Surprisingly good
Looking at the reviews, I put off watching this for a while. Maybe though having low expectations allowed me to enjoy it a lot more. I found it incredibly funny and the humour to be pretty original. It has all the tropes and cliches of a kid's movie, but that's to be expected. The Pokemon were fun and cute and exciting, and the humour was definitely above par.
One of Us (2017)
Interesting and informative
A short look at a Hassidic community in Brooklyn, mostly through the lenses of three different people who have left the community. A common theme of ostracisim emerges, in addition to some explicit abuse. There is some effort made to hear from those in the community, though this largely behind-the-scenes and the overall feel is largely condemnatory. Of course, that is warranted considering the stories of those who have left. It would have been good to also hear from more who actively take part in and believe in the lifestyle. But perhaps I'm asking too much of a single documentary. Nonetheless, I would recommend.
Denial (2016)
Worth the watch for the content
Particularly interesting for the subject matter and an important piece of recent history. Though made in 2016, however, the movie views like it was filmed in the 90s, which is a bit weird, but perhaps intentional?
Valkyrie (2008)
Better than I expected
Super interesting story worth following, but if you're like me, learning Tom Cruise is the lead might put you off. The other English and American actors are admittedly a little distracting, but the story carries and is a good way to reflect on this important part of WWII history.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)
Borders on caricature, important nonetheless
The more stories we hear from survivors of conversion therapy, the more movies we'll see on this theme. And this is certainly an a theme that needs continued attention. Some of the anti-gay characters in this particular film border on caricature though (classic line: "take your hair out of your face, you can't hide from God"), which scores easy points with the audience because the practice is obviously evil, but in doing so the film sacrifices believability.
Er ist wieder da (2015)
Important film
A particularly important film with the rise of new nationalisms in Europe. I wasn't a big fan of the planned stuff, but the film is almost worth watching just for the random interactions with the public, kind of like a German Sacha Baron Cohen. There is some great and chilling material there. Also good to see the odd objector in modern-day Germany, like people asking him to leave because no one should be impersonating Hitler in public.
