Disrupting Wine - The Life of an Entrepreneur (2020)
More startup than wine doc
Fast paced and interesting. More focused on the startup/entrepreneurial aspect than the wine FYI
Perfect Feet (2019)
Foot Fetsh Fantasy?...
While searching for foot exercises online, I randomly stumbled onto this film. A very pleasant surprise! It does a great job walking the fine line of being truly informative, yet still being fast paced and a very watch. One of the few positive things that have come out of self quarantine!
This Is Meg (2017)
Smart concept!
Was listening to the Indie Film Hustle podcast and learned about this film. Not a surprise that the guy behind Indie Film Hustle would come up with such a brilliantly designed production. Hilarious, free flowing comedy. Smart concept, well executed. Great commentary of the influence of social media on those seeking a role in the public eye.
The Edict (2017)
Indie psychological thriller
Deftly handled psychological thriller. Great locations. Shades of classic films from the genre. An impressive indie film for the budget.
Belushi's Toilet (2018)
Refreshingly unique!
True indie with a great premise and not handled in a an obvious or heavy-handed way
Carving a Life (2017)
Indie film on alcoholism
I was looking for films tackling addiction, and came across Carving a Life. What a find! Great performances, outstanding filmmaking, and a broadcast quality production. I don't want to give any spoilers, but well worth watching to the end.
Bugs: A Trilogy (2018)
Smart spooks!
An intelligent, well assembled collection of short stories. More psychological horror/thriller than mindless jump scares. A really smart indie film!
Hesperia (2019)
Great casting, great locations
Strong cast, great location, and authentic small town grit make for a great indie crime drama. A clever premise helps the film feel fresh in a well worn genre. Overall, a composed and engrossing drama.
Viral Beauty (2018)
Clever and Timely!
Viral Beauty is a scathing look at the rise of social media and its influence on our culture. The main character starts the film as delusional, but in a very authentic way that is reflective of society. The level of delusion actually helps the main character achieve the level of entitlement that no one should feel they have a right to. It's a very clever feedback loop that the filmmaker employs, and the fact that it feels like it could actually happen makes it brilliant. I do not understand the 1 star reviews, especially from those who didn't even make it out of act 1. It's the type of film that should be made.
MIA (2019)
Stong performances, and direction
An impressively personal feeling film with a level of honesty that is truly refreshing. Great performances, and no over-the-top Hollywood story tropes. I didn't feel mislead, or like I was being sold something. It maintained artistic integrity to a degree that is increasingly rare, and truly admirable.
Joyland (2019)
"Banned from theaters!"
Super indie comedy, with a claim of "banned from theaters." It's like the film Friday, but the Atlanta version. Great cast with undeniable verisimilitude. Film is somehow better than the trailer, and well worth a watch.
Stadium Anthems (2018)
"When writing something meaningful, use very few words..."
Stadium Anthems is a smart, polished, fun satire. A hilarious and scathing takedown of the state of the music industry, and specifically how file sharing and the digital era changed it for the worse. Exceptional writing, and great cast. I am shocked I hadn't heard of it previously. An admirable amount of original music woven into the story, and an epic undertaking. A true passion project, and well worth a watch!
The Redeeming (2018)
Excellent indie, one location thriller
Film makes the most of its one location and small cast. Very well executed thriller with shades of the film Misery. I have a a soft spot for films done well with limited resources. This is a smart production from start to finish.
Know Your Enemy (2019)
Outstanding acting and directing
A rare single-location-type indie film that really moves. Farshad Farahat is exceptional- grounded, engaging, and never a moment when I didn't believe his performance. It reflects incredibly well not just on the lead actor, but on the director and filmmakers. Challenges stereotypes, examines class/privilege, and raises lots of great questions. Really well done!
Ekaj (2015)
Gritty!
Unique narrative and intentionally choppy editing/camera work lend to the grit of this low budget film. Satisfyingly grounded ending. Fresh voice, and perspective.
Unlawful Justice (2018)
Gripping, Grounded, and Real
Excellent verisimilitude. It was gripping, grounded, and realistic. Material was well developed, and well handled. A great police drama.
The Green Room (2016)
Could have watched the entire series in one day
Episodes are quick paced and fun. I could have knocked out the entire series in a day, but forced myself to wait so I could enjoy it over multiple evenings
Ring Ring (2019)
Horror/Thriller with a good dose of comedy
It was fun watching an indie horror/thriller that wasn't afraid to throw in some laughs. I'd hesitate to call it a comedy in this genre bender, but I definitely got some great laughs out of it. Really well put together and a solid production with a great cast!
Everlasting (2016)
Stong theming, well presented
Excellent production with strong themes subtly woven into the narrative. An outstanding independent film that manages to strike the delicate balance of grit, while still being a very polished.
Purdah (2018)
Outstanding documentary beautifully shot on location in India
Outstanding documentary beautifully shot on location in India. An inspiring tale of overcoming deep culturally entrenched norms to chase your own destiny. A wonderful story, wonderfully presented!
Broken Ceiling (2018)
Great film for cubicle gophers
Excellent indie look at corporate culture and the cubicle universe. Easy to relate to for anyone who has worked in an office. Great performances and tense!
Huckleberry (2018)
Complex subject handled deftly
A high school film with some legit weight to it. Great execution of a complex subject with outstanding cinematography. A coming of age tale set in the late 90's, with modern themes. Will resonate with many viewers, but can be appreciated by all.
Dirty Beautiful (2015)
Smart and fun indie romance
An outstanding independent film with no deficiencies. Reminded me a little of a Charlie Kaufman film. Excellent direction, cast, locations and an overall solid production. Although independent in spirit, it definitely had high levels of production and storytelling.
Will & Liz (2018)
Well executed indie romance
Camera work, locations, the romance itself, and the locations were all outstanding. Takes place all around Venice Beach, CA and made me want to travel there immediately. A fun modern romance, that was really well done.
Erasing Eden (2016)
Well directed indie
Outstanding performance by the lead actor, strong direction, and beautiful cinematography. Bold choices and a serious helping of grit. It feels raw and authentic in a way that is really difficult to capture even with unlimited resources.
