Detachment (2011)
Everyone should see this movie!!!
I haven't written a review in awhile and this movie completely moved me. It will awaken you as a person for compassion and a reason to love life. I can't see how anyone would not get anything out of this movie and it is a movie I will always recommend. The cast supported each other very well. The topics in the movie are realistic and touching. I think everyone should see this movie.
Project Power (2020)
Cheesy
Typical cheese and no crackers, oh wait it's Netflix now it makes sense. This is so beneath Jamie Foxx. It's not a waste of time but it's far from keeping your mind occupied and is visually okay. Lack of cast support leaves this movie basically in 3 characters hands and it falls short. In closing I took a chance thinking it would get better as it went on in which it never had a chance to begin with it was a hald a movie in my eyes, far from stimulated.
The Assistant (2019)
The Depressed Secretary
I watched a secretary unhappy at her job for 47 minutes, seriously??? This is a movie? There is no cast support and I believe thousands of people could have played Julia Garner's role, not her best work. If you like slow and boring then this film is for you. The writing is below pare along with the direction. Why even mention in the story line that Jane is an aspiring film producer, then never even touch upon her passion. Then a 11 minute no where scene where she is suppose to take a stand with an HR rep was the first bit of acting in the movie and it was a scene that should have ended up on the editing floor. Then another 20 minutes of a depressed office worker. If your waiting for something to happen it doesn't. What a complete waste of time and if you want to feel anything for this character you won't. If anyone thinks this is artsy, then good for you because I've watched a lot of films and this one ranks at the very bottom.
Queen & Slim (2019)
Would have never happened...
This is one of the worst written and directed movies I have seen in awhile, more than half the stuff in the movie would have never happened. I started wondering if this was a drama/comedy. It's 2 hours I will never get back and I hope who ever reads this will be saved from this horrible film.
1917 (2019)
Best Picture Really???
I got into about an hour and half of this kid following him to deliver a letter. He defies every obstacle thrown at him and can outrun bullets. Miraculously finds milk to help out a baby, then jumps into a river and a waterfall where the letter in his jacket doesn't get ruined also can swim with boots on, does anyone realize that when you go in water with boots you sink, really Best Picture, far from it!, Judy and Midway were much better movies and Joker just blows this away. Best Director, umm no, many parts unrealistic...very disappointed. The battle scenes, wait there wasn't any and you really never got a perspective of the opposition. So the trench scenes were basically the more interesting scenes. I've seen plenty of war type movies and this wouldn't even make my Top 5.
Knives Out (2019)
Do you have a "Clue"
Basically this movie is similar to the 1985 movie "Clue" but with a much better cast and a bit more funnier than the other. No spoilers here and if you want to be mildly entertained than it's for you. I rated this an eight because of decent acting throughout otherwise this would have went belly up. The movie itself has some twists and turns but not enough to throw you off track. I did like the setting and the sets as well as the characters this time around. Enjoy it if you watch it but don't hope for too much.
In This Gray Place (2018)
Seriously?
This movie was poorly written directed and produced, so yes it's really bad. This looks to be based in current time and none of this wood have happened. They attempt to piece together a story that becomes cluttered as it goes on. No need to go to deep into this review because there's nothing really more to say than don't waste your time. Not sure what type of people are watching this to get such a high rating but it's false, get some popcorn and go outside and watch main street for a better show!
Light of My Life (2019)
Another boring Casey thing...
I can't believe there is something even more boring than "Manchester by the Sea" that Casey Affleck is involved in. In over 77 minutes of waiting for something to happen I lost complete interest but finished the film. It was like watching a bunch of conversations, it did tell somewhat of a story but it also left you in the dark as well. I never seen actor walk so slow in movie, that's how slow paced this movie if I hadn't made it clear enough yet. If you want to see something happen quickly then just watch the last 15 minutes because that's where i should have started watching from but I also seen that coming after an hour of nothing. I'm not a fan of movies that lead up to a quick ending and all the action as well.
Unplanned (2019)
Unplanned Disappointment
I was looking forward to this movie and was not happy when it became a "narrative" flick. If you are into having you tell the story of the movie like an audio book then you will enjoy this. The acting by Ashley Bratcher was better than averaged but the supporting cast wasn't at all a help to this movie. I'm not sure how this made it to the theatre, would have made a better Lifetime movie.
If you are not able to handle graphic scenes about the abortion then this might not be for you. I personally never dealt with it but my first love did and I can't even imagine what she went through. This movie does try to keep those part as real as possible and helps keep it on track. The one scene that really got to me was the "P.O.C. Room" and I was not expecting that, I can understand why Pro-Life people want to save lives but I also believe that " Pro-Choice" is a woman's right.
I was also on the fence about the writing in this movie. It goes from somewhat sophisticated and heartfelt to thoughtless and impulsive, to a point where it just becomes unrealistic and the movie becomes unglued. The other aspect of the movie which gets twisted into the dialogue is religion and this doesn't sit well with me at all, it's a one-sided story that didn't need to be so abundant during the film.
The best part of the movie was the ending and the human side of life which was a beautiful moment.
Thoroughbreds (2017)
Too much hype and not enough substance
This movie is far from "American Psycho" and is not "wickedly funny" unless you're in dry humor. The only thing missing was a butler played by Steven Wright. There are few moments that are witty and even a chuckle hear and there but it depends what type of mood you are in. Glad I watched this mid day and didn't waste my evening in this piece or work. Overall it seem like a bunch of tangents thrown together that somewhat worked and that acting wasn't bad just not an Oscar performance. I wish it was a bit darker to stand up to the plot and it just stays at one pace the entire which becomes boring, always expecting more which it doesn't deliver.
Rocketman (2019)
Elton "Oliver Twist" John
I am very disappointed about this movie. It reminds me of a bad version of "Oliver Twist" with with poor attempts at being a musical. I would rather watch a documentary on Elton John. I feel the acting was average and was hoping the film would get better as went along. Well 20 minutes in and now it's starting to become a budget cut of "Grease" but not even close. Not sure why I haven't turned it off yet. I'm glad I didn't spend any money on this and was able to stream it, so save your money.
The movie gets a bit better when they introduce Bernie Taupin and how Elton finally started out his career, this is more of how I would have like to see the movie portrayed. A beautiful moment happens when they finally write and record "Your Song"...the movie is finally taking a turn for the better. But then at the Troubadour show it went back to the theatrics they don't help the movie out. So now back to the "musical film" it's almost like they couldn't make their minds up when creating this, it's too bad because it's such a wonderful story.
I do have to say that Taron Egerton gives a decent performance as he usually does and is the highlight of this film but once again in brief moments due to writing and directing. If you are into musicals then this film is for you, if not then you may throw up a little in your mouth, just kidding but you will have a hard time with this one.
The whole confession room scenes are somewhat small roles that really don't need to be there and my guess is a creative concept that failed. Some of those more emotional scenes could have been played better but the were to quick and far and few between. It's also hard to distinguish what is factual and what is Hollywood.
Watching him get self destructive was very sad to see but as a musician and songwriter I could relate, but definitely a more realistic sense of what Elton was going through at that period of his life. I did like the way the music entwined Elton's life story with movie and certain scenes. The thing that brings it down is the the "routines" that go along with the songs in parts like his suicide was in poor taste.
Towards the end it starts to become repetitive from scene to scene and the downfall of Elton which makes the movie a bit depressing but this was his life. At least the costume changes kept it interesting. When the movie finally gets to the ending it obviously resolves from how it opened up and sheds light on Elton's understanding of himself and life.
I'm glad he has been sober for 28 years the music world would not be the same without him, I only wish the movie had a more serious approach, for me it was ok and the 2 hours was not completely wasted.
Red Joan (2018)
Very slow and boring
I turned this movie off half way through so not sure this review would help. I think I would get more out of a YouTube documentary. It just didn't go anywhere for me the viewer. The acting, sets, clothing, etc... are what they should be for a film like this, with that being said if you don't have paint to watch dry then you will probably like this. I think a movie like "Bridge Of Spies" is more entertaining for a true story, isn't that what most movies are about, I was not entertained so therefor, I shut it off; maybe I will revisit it another day.
I'm Going to Break Your Heart (2019)
I'm Going To Break Up With You...
I didn't know anything about this movie so I went into it with a clear mind. I am a musician/songwriter/singer/teacher and a man. I felt so bad for Raine and for someone who has been in relationships like this I couldn't believe he is still with Chantal. You can love someone and walk away.
Every time he spoke she would rudely interrupt, talk over him, get aggressive and would not quit until her point was heard. I could believe how she complained about the little things about Raine. It's the little things that you love most about a person. She seems to be very controlling and likes to argue. She likes to point out his flaws or mistakes and constantly questions him almost to the point of challenging him.
Menopause is not an excuse!
I know she's not wrong 100% and there where times when what he said wasn't nice but it also wasn't earth shattering. He really seemed calm but also frustrated and unhappy. Sometimes when things are broken they should remain that way.
If you can't respect each others feelings then move on. Any time Raine expressed his feelings she did not or would not acknowledge them. I personally would not put up with that, life isn't meant to be spent that way and some people do it for decades.
I hope this film if anything helps anyone dealing with issues like these, it takes a lot to put your self out there like they did. Maybe things will get better for them, if not then back your bags and try a new road, nothing wrong with change.
