Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
Once you get Past the Bad Character Phrases and Speech, it gets Good!
This film to me gets a nine rating, which makes up for Snails cracking jokes even in serious scenes, and my dislike of the Mage Damador using SWORDS instead of spells in battle. The scenery in the background was amazing, especially the Magic School and Tavern, and I loved the mythical creature designs and effects, but the Dwarf looked a little weird. I LOVED the Dragons, Gold and Red and their designs. The tasks the heroes have to go to to get the Rod were also enjoyable.
THE CHARACTERS:
DAMADOR- Profion's evil assistant, given slow lines, a sword, and blue lips. PROFION- An evil Wizard, overreacts when he finds something new. RIDLEY- An honourable thief, partner to Snails. SNAILS- Given a weird name and all the comic relief, the black thief Snails behaves a little bit like a joke. Partner to Ridley. MARINER- A good Mage. ELWOOD- A broad Dwarf. NORDA- An Elven tracker.
THE PLOT:
Profion and Damador in the Mage Castle Dunegeons, find a Sceptre to control Gold Dragons. However, this does not work, so the Dragon is killed by Profion, who fails. He sends a little Imp-type creature as a spy to find out what the good Mages have in mind. They want to find a Rod which controls Red Dragons, a species even mightier than the Gold. This can be used by the Empress to overthrow Profion and the evil Mages. Ridley and Snails meanwhile, break into the castle, and encounter Mariner, a good Mage, whose master, a Wizard, is killed by Damador in the Library, looking for his scroll to find the Rod. Snails, Ridley and Mariner and chased by some knights with Damador, until they reach the edge of the village through a magic portal. They have some magic maps with them to find the rod. The meet a warrior Dwarf, Elwood, who takes them to a Tavern for a meal. Suddenly, Damador breaks in, and a riot ensures with Orcs and things. After they escape, they go to the Thieves Guild Maze to find the key to the Rod's dungeon home. The Dwarf tags with them, and Ridley goes through the maze, outwitting its puzzles, including dodging blades and swinging axes, and going through the rooms of stone eyes shooting fire. He then goes into the vault and gets the treasure. Damador invades and captures Mariner, and the party discover an Elf tracker has been following them. The Elf arrests them and takes them after Damadar and his Beholder servants in a ruined fortress. Snails tries to steal a map, and is killed by Damadar. Ridley and Mariner escape, and the Elf takes them to an Elven village, where the Elves heal them. Ridley goes to a dungeon, and a skeleton comes to life to tell him the Rod is evil. Ridley gets the Rod, but Damador takes it and goes to the city. The evil Mages use the Red Dragons, whilst the good Mages use Gold Dragons, and they dogfight over the city. The good guys win after a long fight, and Profion is eaten by a Dragon. They are all knighted and made equal.
The Hobbit (1977)
The Hobbit- A Classic
I enjoyed this movie, since it is a timeless classic. Sure it missed out the Giants, Beorn and the Arkenstone, but it was adapted for TV, and they weren't that vital to the story anyway. A lot of people complain the songs in this movie were horrible, but I thought they were good, and the scenery was well captured of my image of Middle-Earth. The Hobbit is also my favourite book, so I thought this movie did well. CAUTION SPOILERS AHEAD! The plot focuses around a semi-human Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who lives in a quiet village called Hobbiton, in a hill. One day, the Wizard Gandalf the Grey visits him to share a grand adventure, with a party of Dwarfs, to reclaim their kingdom and treasure from the Dragon Smaug! Bilbo agrees to go, but his mind soon changes when he has to burgle from Trolls, before Gandalf arrives. He visits Rivendell of Elrond Halfelven, fights Goblins in the mountains, plays a deadly game with Gollum and finds the One Ring, forged in Mordor long ago, Goblins and Wolves chase him up trees, he is rescued by Eagles and goes to the forest, meeting Giant Spiders and Elves, before going to Lake-Town and meeting Men, and then the Dragon. The Dragon is killed and Gandalf returns in time to witness a great battle against Goblins, in which many Dwarfs, Men and Elves lose their lives. Gandalf and Bilbo go home. A timeless classic.
The Time Machine (1960)
The Time Machine, a Brilliant Film
The Time Machine is an excellent film that follows the book by H.G Wells.
A Professor called George invents a Time Machine and shows his model and design to David Filby and his other friends before they all leave and he sets out in it. Taking to the future he stops during World War 1 to chat with David Filby's son James Filby and heads, (coincidence don't you think), to a random date that turns out to be World War 2 where he sees a plane through the roof of his now overgrown laboratory and he stops in 1966 to a 3rd War which involves nuclear satellites and he notices Filby who is now in a metal armoured suit, Filby comments on how he never aged one bit. The missile hits and everyone hurries for the shelters as the ground breaks open and lava flows down the street, (in outdated effects but this is 1960 right?), George hurries for the Time Machine as millions of people hurry for the shelters and George goes on through nuclear disasters until the wars stop and everything seems peaceful and quiet. There is a stream and a temple full of fruit and books that crumble to dust but most of all there is the Eloi, the race that the humans that managed to stay on the surface during the nuclear war and lava flow evolved to. George's Time Machine is gone and he befriends a Eloi woman called Weena but she gets took by the rulers of the underground shelters who use the dumber Eloi as their cattle. It turns out that Filby and the others that retreated underground turned into cannibal monsters that dwelled underground and became troll-like, the Morlocks. George goes down and after a battle with the Morlocks discovers their weakness, fire. He frees the Eloi and whilst running through the caves back to the surface, he kills the Morlocks and they all escape. George goes back into his Time Machine to say goodbye to his friends back at home as he is returning to Weena's time for a while, (but he can still visit other times, unlike the remake), he then realises he is heading for the future not the past. According to the book, the furure involves a dying red Sun on a beach and Giant Crabs instead of humans, then the Sun turns supernova and expands to destroy the Earth, but a quick adjusting of the levers means he goes back to the past before returning to the future.
