Screen Two: Words of Love (1989)
For Holly fans only?
Watching this again last night (17 Sept 2010), probably more than 20 years after the first and only other time I watched it, was an interesting experience. It still has an emotional charge, and its poignancy is still very present. But I can't help but think that it may be of limited interest to anyone who is not a dyed-in-the-wool Buddy Holly fan.
Some of the acting is very good -- Charlie Creed-Miles puts in a beautiful early-career performance, for example. And the story is well told, cross-cutting between Holly's last day and the lives of a couple of English schoolboy fans of the bespectacled rocker.
On the downside, though, several of the actors' accents are pretty slippery, sounding more English than they ought to, I'm sure!
My rating, inevitably, reflects my interest in the subject matter. Impartial viewers may be less generous.
