Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Visual compelling and emotionally knocks your breathe out (minor spoiler)
For me this film, is one of most visually compelling films I have seen in recent times. I quite like the use of split screen and the fast cuts between shots.
You do really care for the characters and get drawn into their lives. You see how inhumanely people can treat one another and it is so tragic.
You see how drugs can affect people and the toll substance abuse takes.
The end of the film stays in your mind for some time. The film was still resonating with me the next day.
The only minor niggle is I did not get to know enough about where the character Tyrone comes from. And this is really a minor point.
Gojô reisenki: Gojoe (2000)
Worth seeing (minor spoilers)
I am glad I saw this film having seen some of the director's other films in the past. I thought the production values was great like the costumes and settings with the bridge. It was interesting to see how the concept of spirit and demons were handled.
I do agree with some of the other comments about the fight scenes. They were hard to follow at times.
Ultimately, a moral tale. It would be interesting to know what some Japanese viewers thought of the film. It is a film I would like to see again.
Some scenes like the ones where Benkai and the Prince were fighting on a "psychic" level were well done.
I did come out of the cinema thinking what has just happened here. Intense.
