Original Child Bomb (2004)
Inflamatory, biased and sensationalistic
This piece of garbage tries to pass itself as a semi-documentary, when it is pretty much a propaganda piece for the anti-war movement. I find it extremely distasteful how it presents the devastation in Japan without showing any relevant background on the war itself.
In reality this mostly feels like an end-of-semester class project for an audiovisual arts course.
I am all for freedom of expression and I respect the visual arts, but I don't like when propaganda tries to format itself as to pass for documentary media.
There are plenty of decent anti war films that do the job *right* and without the cheap antics seen in this piece.
When the Bough Breaks (1994)
What an unexpected great find!
I ran into this movie in one of my on demand channels. I put it on because I had seen everything else I had available. Excellent movie, kept me glued to the TV the whole damn time.
I Did not even bother to pause it to check the credits because Jordan looked a lot like either Isabella Rosellini or Jared Letto, and that kept nagging me through the movie.
How come I am expected to fill-in 10 lines worth of comments? This is kind of silly. Oh well, I honestly had not heard before of this movie, Sheen was more or less a generic authority figure, other 10 actors could have done at least the same job and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Ally Walker played her part more as a real rookie than her actual character, who was supposed to have 3 years in the field. Sometimes in the movie you wonder if she has been in that job for a whole month.
The rest of the cast was pretty forgettable, but still, it was a great movie.
La virgen de los sicarios (2000)
Great movie, lousy attempt at subtitles
I found this movie almost by accident on TMC on Demand. It is an incredible movie but the subtitles are so terrible that you might as well ignore them. Too much is lost in the translation.
The other reviewer is right about the element of violence, it is there to make a point. I was raised in Puerto Rico and lived there for 21 years and this movie reminded me of all the pointless killings (which sadly, 11 years later, are still getting worse as each day passes). There are some very subtle references to the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez which really add up to the overall effect.
Overall it is a movie that will haunt me for a long time.
Psychomania (1973)
Too bad they don't make movies like that anymore...
I saw this movie ONCE when I was a kid. I saw it dubbed in Spanish in Puerto Rico, in a black and white TV.
It rocked my world. I had nightmares about it and the title music for years.
Once I got into the web I started searching around but since I could not even remember the name of the damn movie I was only limited to the Spanish translated names for the stones in the graveyard/park/whatever (I was 7 or 8 when I saw it, sorry).
Then I struck gold. I found a website called broadcast dot com (Yahoo bought them a while ago). I was working graveyard shift in a telco NOC and I started watching web films to stay awake. I literally started watching each movie broadcast dot com had online, until I find this movie called Psychomania. 30 seconds into the movie and I freak out. I found it!!!
Since I knew it could be gone the next day I made sure I saved away the name and year of the movie, and later when I found our about imdb.com I was able to tag it. Problem is the movie was not available for sale.
Then a few weeks ago I decided to do a cold search and there it was listed as a DVD. Oh yes.
Now, the movie itself rocks. It is not Oscar material, but it is spooky on its own right. And that damn theme song will keep haunting me for life. Too bad they don't make movies like that anymore...
