Footlight Parade (1933)
Cagney - McHugh Exchanges
As an avid fan of both Cagney and Frank McHugh, who appears as Francis, the dance choreographer, I was thoroughly excited to see their warm exchanges in this film. They had worked together for the first time the year before on "The Crowd Roars," and they became quick friends. They would continue to work together in at least 10 more films. Watch for their dialogues together and then keep a close on Cagney as he can barely contain his laughing in a few different scenes. He manages to rein himself in to deliver his lines but clearly their warm friendship (and McHugh's fabulous comedy talent) ebbed onto the big screen in this film. Lastly, Cagney & Keeler's dance scene is one of my favorites of all time - I'm just sad that it was so short!
Three Men on a Horse (1936)
Very funny 30's comedy (but also definitely dated)
The film definitely has some dated elements...even some humor that in the 30's probably would have been great but today one shrudders at their use.
Nevertheless, the film is great -- Frank McHugh plays a rare principle (which is a travesty since he is extremely funny and steals practically every scene he is in). Allen Jenkins also appears, playing another great hood (but loveable) character that he is so good at.
Watch McHugh's mastery of slight mannerisms that make his shy character come to life.
