Theatre of Blood (1973)
The Theatre That Oozed Style.
This very British film is a showcase for the style and flourish of Vincent Price, and is immense fun as a result. A very black tongue-in-cheek comedy, Vincent Price plays the deranged Shakespearean actor, saved from death by a group of homeless people, who act as his minions. Diana Rigg plays his daughter/accomplice, as he revenges himself upon the all star cast of "critics" who deprived him of the rewards of his life's work. I think my three favourite scenes were the opening "Caesar" scene, the "re-writing" of "the Merchant of Venice" and the frenetic dual, with Vincent performing somersaults and back-flips (sure, it could have been a stunt-double, but its just sooo funny). This film is probably one of my top 5 horror movies of all time. See it!
Jerry and Tom (1998)
Never heard of it, glad I saw it.
Some very rewarding performances make this movie about paid hitmen / car salesman a special find in your local video store. Its twice as good as Tarantino's "Jacky Brown" and features the same overly chatty style but Sam Rockwell, Joe Mategna and the other actors in this film look as if they were actually having a good time during filming. Funny cameos by William H. Macy and Ted Danson offset more poignant moments, such as a mistaken killing and the inevitable finale. Apart from the camera lingering on static scenes a little too much, its an entertaining watch. Underrated stuff.
