Mimino (1977)
Truly a Soviet Comedy Classic
"Mimino" is one of those films everyone in the Old Soviet Union has seen at least a dozen times. The phrases, ideomatic expressions, and wonderful accents have become a stable of Russian humor. A simple story of a country bumpkin aspiring great hights is symbolic and metaphorical of Russians (by that I mean anyone in the CIS) in general, be they from Georgia or Turkmenistan And how can one not hum one of the catchiest tunes of the Soviet Era films. Chita Drita Chita Margolito.....DA
El día que me quieras (1935)
What a tango film should be
If you like tango, Argentina and a love story this movie is a must. The haunting voice of Gardel is something that will stay with you. Boy, what wouldn't I give to grow up in Buenos Aires in those time.
The Lost World (1925)
One of the greatest classics
A film both truly innovative and highly engaging....Its one of the greatest films of the era and earned its ranking in the annals of film history. Amazingly good acting by Bassie Love and Hughes....A great example of cinematography from the "Roaring Twenties." The most dramatic and artistic and best era of Hollywood.
El día de la bestia (1995)
The great tradition of Spanish irreverent sense of humor
The Spanish cinema is often overlooked and under-appreciated. Yet a tradition of Spanish cinema has brought to us so much wimsycal treatment of traditional subjects, including religion (a reaction to a strict religious conservative tradition). A truly great film in the post-apocolyptic setting in the modern-day Madrid. As a student of Almodovar, De Iglesias has done his homework.
