Rough water
16 December 2019
Céline (Elodie Vagalumni) is a girl between two lovers, between various jobs, between two suicides. Thanks to poetry, she is going to face her deep distress of the selfishness of those around her and of society. First film shot with a micro budget by Maxime Kermagoret, " The Sweet Water Running Through My Veins" is not a calm river. Elodie Vagalumni, better known in the X rated genre under the name of Charlotte of Castile (more than 5000 followers on social media platform!), is very convincing as the lost girl lost on the edge of suicide, prisoner of her anxieties and the real lack of tenderness. The director did not choose the easy way to show the life of this young woman, probably inspired by the real life of many unemployed young people. The feeling of discomfort is reinforced by the choice of black and white and long static shots and a real oral sequence (which got the film an official -12 rating). Obviously, the choice of black and white is justified in the end, but the exercise is heavy and not very happy. However, Kermagoret demonstrates his mastery of the technique, and we must watch his next works hoping that he will have found the joy of living.

Real or fake Lelouch film?
7 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Bécaud coasting the entire film is doing quite well. No, he does not sing but do not hesitate to drop the shirt, pants ... and ALL the rest . A FREE MAN is a kind of modern melodrama about divorce, seen from a male perspective . The story is a bit misogynist for the time (women = housewife, whore or confidante ) and would be considered completely sexist today, which probably explains why the film has not been re-released since its original release. The film is produced by the production company of Claude Lelouch ( Les Films 13) and his shadow hangs heavy over the entire film signed by "Roberto Muller" which is his only achievement. The filming ( camera shoulder, many outside ) and rhythm reminiscent of the new wave style that made the fame of Lelouch. Single flash of bizarre is a sequence where characters watch automobiles stunts for a study on sexual intercourse (!) Would prove a grain of madness unusual for Lelouch . The data sheet upabove forget the actor Philippe Khorsand (1948-2008) in the role of a hotel receptionist and Beccarie does not appear in the copy distributed in France...

a young seducer (Mario Angelotti) becomes, almost unwillingly, a bigamist
30 August 2010
"It's Spring" (litteral translation of the original Italian title) is an excellent bitter sweet comedy, a specific genre in Italy. It tells the story of how a young seducer (Mario Angelotti) becomes, almost unwillingly, a bigamist. Husband of the tough Sicilian Maria Antonia (Elena Varzi) in Catena, in the south, and husband of the joyful Luccia in Milan, northern Italy. It demonstrates two sides of Italy which are very true even to this day: the charming happiness of some, and the dark and introverted silence of others. Apparently this was not released in France until 2010, on French TV, on the "Cinema Club" weekly program on FR 3 TV. A must see for fan of the Italian cinema.

Greatest Franco musical numbers
30 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Never released on video or DVD, RIFIFI EN LA CIUDAD is very rare to see on screen. Thanks to the Madrid Cinematheque, a new print was made in 1993 and has been shown in a few Franco retrospectives. The two others comments present here, tell you the excellent work done by Jesus and his team. What they both forgot, are the two flamboyant "cabaret" songs performed by Marie Vincent. The first one,"Passo Chico", has her singing in a shiny silver outfit about the seduction of the double steps performed by "Chico", then it switches to a larger scene where a knight in armor is dancing on stage , around him are also several dancing girls in costumes, including one in a Cleopatra outfit. A very modern sequence, mixed in a very classic and serious crime film story. Later on, Miss Vincent also sings about what love can do to a woman, all dressed up in fluffy lingerie nightgown. A film not be missed, even if you are not a Franco fan. By the way, who ever credited Jess Franco as "the worst Film Director Ever" ? ...

cinematic happening
19 June 2006
By the end of the 70'es, the boom era of French erotic-pornographic cinema was over, mainly because of the new tax law on those kind of films. However, it was the beginning of « pop » movies which also liked to display more than your average nudity. It was time for some underground artists to experiment on celluloid. For example WHAT A FLASH assembled as many famous people of the seventies available, in a giant before-the-end-of-the world orgy. In another direction, Raymond Lewyn, a famous cabaret/theater creator in France, did IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT,DON'T DISGUST THE OTHER (word to word translation). The film is showing the screening of a hard core porno in a small cinema where everybody comment and react to what they see on the screen. As it is pointed in the credits, « the dialogs have been fully improvised by the comedians». This is clearly a sort of cinematic happening and has to be classified has one of those UFO (unidentified Filmic Object). Although you need to be fluent in French to appreciate the vivacity of the dialog, this is a must see for the amateurs of unusual. The film inside the film is a satire of all the classic porn situation and figure a few Jess Franco regulars. Also the comedians playing the « punters » of the screening , are nowadays world famous in France and it is funny to see them making they first steps.

Donahue meets bloody pirates from Philipino island
11 November 1999
Unknown from most written sources, this mysterious production is available on video in France and this is how I manage to tell you more about it. The film is here (in France) signed by Meir Zarchi who is more well known for his gore classic DAY OF THE WOMAN. Apparently he bought the foreign rights for this gory action film and the video distributor confused the word "directed by" with distributed by. Professionaly shot on real island locations the film is a good mix of action and "travelog" ranting and Troy Donahue shouldn't be so ashamed to "forget" this film on his résumé. The pirates are quite effective as rambling sadistic rapists and gorehounds should find their ration of thrills after standing the local dancing ceremonies.
