Who is taking revenge on the gang of Jean Servais for the murder of "Juan"?
29 April 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Rififi en la Ciudad" is woefully underrated (5.3) by IMDb voting. This is a film noir that is masterfully written, directed and photographed. It will repay repeated viewings.

The plot provides a mystery and intrigue framework that operates on multiple levels. The character played by Jean Servais has emigrated to a South American country and made a lot of money, but partly through selling drugs and other shadowy dealings. But these he has kept secret, because he's running for senator, posing as a man of the people who has risen. His background presumably is a fascist who has fled Europe.

The underlings of Servais go overboard and kill a young policeman friend ("Juan") of Detective Mora (played by Fernando Gomez). He sets after Servais with a vengeance, but his superior, played by Antonio Prieto, is much more restrained. Gomez charges ahead like a bull, but gets beat up as a reward. We do not know what he'll do next, or how the friction he has with Prieto will play out.

Soon the thugs of Servais begin to get murdered. We do not know by whom. This becomes a key element of mystery.

The story moves forward linearly in time, yet the story proceeds by a type of sub-plot nonlinearity. There are interludes of Servais campaigning, music, the married life of Gomez, a couple that tried to save the life of Juan, and an entertainer girl friend of Servais who is induced to help the police. Plus, there are the thugs being murdered. All this is complemented by some excellent noir cinematography.

The art of film noir stands high indeed in this film.
