Flirtation Walk (1934)
typical Dick Powell-Ruby Keeler movie, except Ruby doesn't dance.
This film is not anywhere near "42nd Street" in terms of music and plot, but it has a few good moments. Ruby Keeler is a general's daughter who meets Army private Dick Powell when she makes a two day stop in Honolulu, on her way to Manila with her father. There is a pretty good moment early in the film when she falls madly in love with Private Powell (who she has known for two hours) when he sings "Aloha Oe" at a beach luau the two of them crash. Boy gets girl, boy loses girl, and boy gets girl once more, later in the film when he is the top cadet at West Point and her father is the new Superintendent at the Academy. The best song in this movie, "Mr. and Mrs. is the name," is part of the cadet musical Dick writes and produces.
My Man Godfrey (1936)
Terrific height of the Depression comedy
"My Man Godfrey" is the champion of screwball comedies from the 1930s. Every actor is superb for the part played. This is true escapist entertainment for the time period. The minor uncredited players are equally as good as those named in the credits.
The Sullivans (1944)
One of the best wartime films ever!
I first saw this film as an eight year old during the war. I regularly showed the video version to my high school history classes during my teaching career. Even though it was on the edge of being brutally hard to take when the Sullivan family learned of the death of all five of their sons, my students regarded the film as one which showed a great deal about the home front and about the sacrifices this generation made to the country.
