Genuinely creepy atmosphere in this obscure gem

A dark and abandoned old castle in the middle of the night is the setting for a chance encounter between two strangers, both on a quest for a precious diamond hidden somewhere under the dusty floorboards. This is a short horror tale, ultra-rare because it's a previously unreleased British TV pilot. The whole film has a rough and low budget feel, but that actually adds to the effectiveness. The opening monologue (intended as a series opener for a series that never was) has a dark and washed out appearance that makes it feel like an apparition emerging from the depths of time. Filmed on location in a real castle, the film-makers did an excellent job of giving us a sense of dread, utilizing shadows and sound effects, and some good acting from the two leads, to create a satisfying little tale of mystery, discomfort, and malevolence. This short film would be the perfect opener for a vintage horror movie marathon (it's available on a DVD called "Rare Chills" released by Kaleidoscope).
