With the Rose family sharing a mixed marriage ethnic background it is especially touching that the household's previous breadwinner Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) who is of Jewish descent (both in the series and in actual life), is the one that is trying so hard to bring his family and friends closer through the spirit of the Christmas/Hanukkah season.
This is both a comical episode and a heartwarming episode. Johnny reflects on Christmas season's past when the Rose family celebrated with their utmost wealth even being financially able to hire the well known pianist and David Letterman band leader Paul Shaffer to play piano at their huge mansion Christmas soiree. Now being almost penniless, Johnny wants to bring back some of those special Christmas memories in Schitt's Creek where he now resides at the seedy hotel he co-owns. Johnny (Eugene Levy) convinces his wife Moira (Catherine O'Hara) who reluctantly goes along with Johnny to purchase a Christmas tree which turns out to be even worse than the Charlie Brown Christmas tree.
Johnny quickly becomes disillusioned by the Christmas season when no one else in his family of four shares his same enthusiasm for wanting to make this Hanukkah with the lighting of the Menorah, and Christmas tree with Christmas Carol singing a reality. We are now in the year 2019 and as such this thirty minute comedy episode sends a message that both Christian and Jewish faiths, gays and straights, black and white, can all share in the true meaning of the Christmas and Hanukkah spirit. Sing one and all and enjoy to your hearts content! A perfect 10 for 10 to enjoy the Christmas season.
