Alienist: Angel of Darkness delivers.
robfollower20 July 2020
Seriously beautiful cinematography, art design, wonderful acting. The Wardrobe is to die for I love a good costume piece. The series is Dark and brooding. And the fact that they didn't shy away from horror at all with the (gore and macabre violence). The Alienist: Angel of Darkness is one of the few mass-production period projects which is precise as the BBC dramas; spectacular and magnetic. 'The Alienist' was an excellent TV series as deserves its Golden Globe nominations ; Season 2 Angel of Darkness episodes 1 & 2 so far turned out to be disturbing and engaging with interesting characters. A satisfying murder mystery with high production value . Alienist: Angel of Darkness delivers.

Great start

Glad to see The Alienist hasn't missed a beat. Same edgy storytelling, same great trio of actors, and same great historic set design. Only downside is that the corrupt powerful people feel very broadly written.

Something's not clicking with the acting!
bidish1422 July 2020
There's no surprise or shock in any of the protagonists' faces. Seems like they already know that a sinister evil is on the prowl. Everybody is in such a hurry. The characters' actions look premeditated rather than reactionary to the events unfolding.

I watched season 1 some time ago and I had a great time watching it but episode 1 of season 2 is on shaky grounds. Cinematography and background sets are still as good as season 1 though.

Very Good But The Spectre Of 2020 Feminism Is At Work In 1897
iansyard22 July 2020
I can't fault the writing, dialogue, delivery, production, sets, costumes and excellent acting by the three main leads - especially Daniel Bruhl brooding socially awkward genius psychiatrist. But I got to say what fell flat for me was the outburst speech at the criminal trial and the following feminist movement speech given to the two women at the home of the now annoying crusader PI Sara Howard. Not that there wasn't suffragettes at this period of history, of course there was, but given the smothering #METOO and Identity Politics of the last 5 years the industry is being dragged through, this just feels on the nose in it's delivery to bash the viewers over the head just how bad women had it more than a hundred years ago to the modern empowered women and all those loutish men denying women their civil rights. It's all blah blah blah. Hollywood and the BBC have destroyed the once great tv shows of Game of Thrones, Westworld, Altered Carbon, Doctor Who and Star Trek with this overblown nonsense and I just hope The Alienist isn't going the same way as well. Overall I recommend this episode as there's more than enough to grab your attention, but be warned - modern Hollywood attitudes are at play in 1897.

The galloping horses were disturbing
dhirani24 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was happy to see the beginning of season two, and found the first episode enjoyable. The only problem I had was watching Sara's horse galloping down the street pulling a large buggy, because she was late for work. I have seen to many westerns where a woman, or child are ran over this way. She seems very privileged, and entitled expecting everyone to just get out of her way.

Unnecessary introduction

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed everything besides Sara's over the top introduction. Much more use of CGI now that they're showing more of the 1800's New York City.

Not the book!
dasmithey-4837427 July 2020
Books are made in the movies for the simple reason that people enjoy the books. The first season of The Alienist did a good job of staying fairly close to the source material. However, other than a couple of situations and characters, this is absolutely nothing like the book Angel of Darkness.

Dark
debfullofjoy2 August 2020
This show is okay, I only watch it because there is very little new programming on this time of the year. It is very dark and edgy and I don't just mean the content. I mean the lighting. I understand some scenes are at night and electricity might not have been widespread but, for TV viewing, they could add light so we could keep up with the story. I feel like I miss so much because I can't see what's going on.

What?
littlesilver20 July 2020
I'm having a hard time following the first 2 episodes. Maybe it's me, but I'm having a hard time understanding what's going on. I must be the only one, because it's rated highly. Hopefully I can catch on. Am I the only one?

Ok I guess if you are comfortable with dead babies storyline
papaioannoumarilena13 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, I was nt able to finish the episode, because I cannot entertain myself with a tv show which bases its plot on dead babies... I nostalgically recall the times when children were untouched in movies and tv shows. Now it kinda seems like there is a race between shows, competing about which one will be more nerve provoking to the viewer, who in turn gets more and more used in viewing dark stories. Ok, now this is where I personally draw the line. Other than that I think the show is interesting, but I will not continue watching.
