Cruel Walker
ZegMaarJus17 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was as many episodes on this show, okay but not that good. This show can be better, more action and some more horror zombie action. The Cruel actions of walker against otto's group for letting them walk on bare foots back to the ranch because they were surrounded by Walker's guys.

After the pilot probably best episode of the show
namob-4367330 November 2023
Suddenly the acting is actually good. Alicia has found a fun handsome well acted character to cuddle with, we are introduced to a few new characters, and things almost make sense.

If it wasn't for a couple of minor things to complain about and the fact that a few of the bad actors are still in the show this would actually be a great episode. As is it is good, perhaps the second best of the show after the pilot.

You see? Acting and slightly better writing can actually make things better. Who would have ever thought?

I was just about to stop watching this show, so I think I will keep at it a while longer. I just hope they kill off Madison and her son soon so we can focus on the good actors.

Decent But Not Great
panagiotis199319 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts in a gruesome way with an old man killing himself after his wife turned into a zombie, tragic. Love how Victor just keeps lying to Daniel haha. Oh man I knew Jake and Alicia would be a thing at some point. I have to admit Otto is wise. Love how Madison is willing to risk everything to find Travis' killers. Wait Victor wants to go back to the hotel with Daniel? I can't tell what's his actual plan with all his lies, it will be interesting. So we get introduced to a new threat, a new group of people who seem to want everything Otto has built, this could be something great in future episodes. Wow Daniel left Victor back at the hotel surrounded by zombies? Damn that's brutal. Did Luciana leave? Good episode overall but not the best, my rating is 7/10.

A action/horror package! Love it...

Impressive how this spin-off is surpassing the original work (TWD). "Burning in water" in addition to bringing us totally well-constructed action and terror scenes, introduced a new villain unlike any that has ever passed in the universe created by Robert Kirkman! The story has become much more complex now, and the feeling that the series goes through is that one hour things will explode! I look forward to seeing the fight that will roll in the next few episodes ... The series really is very exciting! The only problem with "Burning in water" was Alicia's twist plot ... No one knows what's really going on in her head! It was Luciana, who was totally clueless and indecisive! I like the bow of Strand and Daniel, they are 2 great characters, and seeing them in conflict is being interesting! Madison and Troy are also creating a totally crazy "Batman and Joker" relationship, and I'm loving it! Nick Klark ... this has turned out to be a real Daryl! I foresee it rendering great action scenes in the series! But for sure the most interesting thing of the episode, for me, was the crow scene! The gore, madness and coldness of Madison ... Wow! What a beautiful scene to see ... I'm simply loving TWD fear, the end of this episode was amazing and gave a feeling of "want more" in the audience! I miss episodes like that in TWD ... let's see what surprises fear will bring us! Looking forward to Ophelia's return! :^)

Another group of survivors is introduced in this suspenseful and fast paced episode where actors shine
Holt3441 October 2020
Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame is the 5th episode of season 3, so far its been a bunch of great episodes with incredible world building. Last episode we saw Daniel Strand kill the ruthless leader of the Gonzalez Dam, and now a more generous and empathic leader stepped up and its Lola Guerrero who got introduced in the previous episode. Another community and its leader Qaletaqa Walker is introduced in this episode, he is one of the antagonist of the season but the truth is this season is very Grey so there's no good or bad guys, which is another reason why I love this season. They have now established most characters, so the native americans want Otto's land as it used to be their people's whilst the Dam controls the water which is an important part.

There's a lot of character development in this episode, and finally some great development for one of my favorite characters which is Alicia. We really get to see another side of her, the one from the old world and it just makes us see how much she have changed. There's also a relationship in the works, will it develop further between Alicia and Jake? Alycia's performance was great and so was many others, the actors for Jake and Troy also was great and as I said in a previous review they are rightfully cast. But what we do know is that Qaletaqa Walker and his group was the one who shot down the helicopter in episode 2 so they indirectly killed the goddaughter of Jeremiah Otto and killed Travis.

The previous episode lacked action except for its ending, this episode has lots of walker kills and action, good action. These shows have always been zombie dramas, good ones at that. The musical score, sound editing and cinematography are again incredible. Daniel Sharman is a fantastic actor that gives life to Troy, remarkable performance. Daniel Stamm did a great job at directing this episode, it was a great one that builds further on the characters and overall plot.

Warning: Spoilers
3x5 Rating: 9.0/10

Storyline: Russell, an elderly resident of Broke Jaw Ranch, wakes up to find his wife, Martha, out of bed. He cautiously approaches and finds that she turned.

Martha took her false teeth out before bed, so Russell takes her hands and has a last dance with his wife. Then, he raises a gun to her temple and shoots them both through the head. A lantern topples over as their bodies hit the floor. The house is set ablaze.

Nick joins the ranchers as they fight to put out the fire. Jeremiah orders everyone to stop so they can save the water since Russell and Martha are already gone.

Nick and Alicia try to dissuade Madison from joining Troy on his mission to find the missing team that went to investigate the downed chopper. Madison ignores their advice and leaves with Troy.

Jake and Alicia flirt at breakfast. Gretchen tells Alicia that Russell was one of the ranch's founding members, along with her father, Jeremiah, and Phil.

Nick brings breakfast to Luciana in their bunkhouse. She insists they leave the ranch and find her people. Nick hesitates, but relents and promises to leave with her once she's healthy enough to travel.

Daniel and Strand sit in Strand's car as a herd crosses the road ahead. Strand warns Daniel to prepare himself in case Ofelia is no longer at the hotel when they arrive. Daniel's suspicion of Strand grows, as he orders him to drive through the herd.

Alicia visits Jake at his house. They kiss. A bond begins to form between them.

Troy spots a herd on the side of the road and orders his team to kill the infected. One of the militiamen argues that they should stick to their mission, but Madison agrees with Troy that the militia should take them out in case the horde makes it to the ranch.

Troy's team eliminates the infected, giving Madison a chance to prove her fighting skills to Troy's men.

Nick visits the ruins of Russell's home and finds a photo of Russell and Martha.

Alicia gets dressed after making love with Jake. They discuss books, and Jake offers to loan her his favorite, a Charles Bukowski poetry collection. She explains that she used to enjoy poetry and art, but no longer sees the point of these things in this post-apocalyptic world.

Nick starts to rebuild Russell's house. Jeremiah watches his efforts, then decides to pitch in. Among the ruins, Jeremiah comes upon Russell's gun. Jeremiah marvels at the gun and calls it a beautiful tool, but Nick is leery of the gun and all it represents.

Troy's team arrives at the helicopter crash site only to discover that whoever shot it down dragged it away. They find shells from a gun owned by Phil and deduce that Phil engaged the assailants before retreating to his outpost.

Troy's team drives to the outpost. On the way, Troy and Madison talk about those they lost. Madison confides that seeing the place where Travis died shook her. She wonders if Troy grieved for his mother after she died. Troy declares that dead people are dead.

At a pit stop on the way to the Rosarito Beach Hotel, Daniel asks Strand why he left the hotel. Strand explains that he wanted to broker a deal with Dante for water. Daniel doubts Strand's story, causing Strand to lash out.

While working on Russell's house, Jeremiah confides that Troy would have uncontrollable crying fits as a child. In the midst of one of these fits, Jeremiah's wife locked Troy in the basement. Jeremiah and his wife were drunk, and forgot about Troy until the next morning. When he finally let Troy out, Troy wasn't mad, he just apologized to his father.

Nick mentions that Luciana wants him to leave the ranch with her, but Madison wants him to stay. Jeremiah asks Nick what he wants for himself.

Troy's group arrives at the outpost to find a pile of charred bodies. They discover Phil, partially scalped and babbling nonsensically as a crow pecks at his exposed brain. Horrified, Madison stabs Phil in the head, and insists they leave. Before the militiamen can move, a Native American man named Walker confronts them with his men.

Walker declares that they attacked the outpost to take back the land that rightfully belongs to his people. Walker orders Troy's soldiers to put down their weapons and remove their boots. Troy's group complies after realizing they are surrounded by snipers. Walker warns them that if they don't abandon Broke Jaw Ranch they will all die.

Jake takes Alicia to a lake and encourages her to find hope in poetry and art. He insists that there is still beauty in this world.

Daniel and Strand arrive at the hotel only to find the entrance abandoned. Strand assumes that the hotel must have been taken by the undead. He warns Daniel not to go inside, but he insists they look for Ofelia. Daniel and Strand enter the hotel and find blood all over the ground. Daniel rings a bell, bringing the undead upon them. With the undead closing in, Daniel pressures Strand to tell the truth about where Ofelia is. Strand finally admits that she left the hotel while he was still there. The zombies attack Strand. Daniel drives off in the car, abandoning Strand.

Nick takes Luciana on a candlelit picnic inside the ruins of Russel's burnt house. He talks excitedly about rebuilding the house and how beautiful it could be, but Luciana does not buy into Nick's fantasy.

Troy's group makes their way back toward the ranch without their shoes and weapons. Madison insists they take a break, but Troy orders his men to keep walking. When Madison challenges him, Troy pulls her aside and says she's not his mother. Madison speculates that Troy's mother must have hated him. As Troy reels from her words, Madison asks the team if they want to rest. Everyone raises their hands. Troy begrudgingly allows his militia to rest until dawn.

Madison wakes up in the middle of the night to find Troy holding a knife to her neck. She urges him to be a better man. He relents and withdraws the knife.

Nick wakes up to find Luciana gone.

The militia trudges down the road with bloody feet toward the ranch.

Luciana makes her way to the border.

Alicia jumps into a lake, allowing herself to feel a rush that doesn't come from killing.

Jeremiah joins Nick at Russell's house and gives him the revolver. He says that if Nick finishes rebuilding the house he can live there.

One of the key themes of this episode is the loss of innocence and the harsh realities of the new world
fernandoschiavi15 April 2024
Nick and Jeremiah bond by cleaning up a wreck of a burnt home. Nick hopes Luciana will like the house but she leaves on her own since the Clarks will not go.

Madison, Troy and their squad set out for the Black Hat Reserve, led by Qaletaqa Walker, on whose ancestral land Broke Jaw was built. Walker ambushes the squad who are forced to return in sock feet with a warning of an impending invasion to take back their land. They are revealed to have shot down the helicopter.

Elsewhere, Strand leads Daniel to the hotel believing Ofelia is still there. They reach the hotel where it is abandoned and overrun. Strand is forced to confess that Ofelia ran off and doesn't know where she is. As a herd approaches, Daniel abandons Strand to the dead.

The episode focuses on the aftermath of a devastating attack on the ranch, leading to a power struggle and further fractures within the community.

One of the key themes of this episode is the loss of innocence and the harsh realities of the new world. Characters are forced to make difficult decisions and confront the darker aspects of human nature as they fight for their survival. The episode also delves into the concept of home and belonging, as the characters struggle to find a sense of security in a world that is constantly changing.

One of the most striking scenes in "Red Dirt" is the funeral sequence, which is beautifully shot and emotionally resonant. This scene serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of the apocalypse and the importance of community in times of crisis.

Overall, "Red Dirt" is a compelling episode that further develops the characters and themes of "Fear the Walking Dead." It is a stark reminder of the harsh realities of the apocalypse and the lengths that people will go to in order to protect themselves and their loved ones.

A Well-Written Horror Themed Episode
lunasnowhehe10 June 2021
This episode plays with fire, and plays with water. In the opening scenes, we see fire. In the final scenes, water. I see a major contrast between the two. Anyways, this episode presents the next antagonists and well.. they are presented in such a creepy way. We also see major development from the Clarks, particularly the siblings.

Awesome 5th episode!

An episode full of very good tension and a great development

Warning: Spoilers
I loved the first scene and it was very creepy. The episode gives us very good interactions between characters, better than in the third. I liked the strand and daniel part, both characters have a lot of chemistry. Nick has a very good interaction with otto and I love the deepening of his characters. Too bad he left Lucian. Alice grows a lot in the episode, managing to overcome her inner fear and loneliness. Jack is a great character, in each scene he manages to show us how he is without having to give him half an episode or an entire one to understand it. I love Jack and Alice together, they are both beautiful. The best part was that of Madison and Troy, as I said, I love their relationship and it is very well built. We had a good sequence of action. the scene of the man sitting in the chair was super creepy and I loved it. Walker seemed like a great villain and I love his presentation. A very interesting and well built villain.
