John McAfee, whose McAfee antivirus software was a go-to standard in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but was later overshadowed by his globe-trotting wild activities, died in a Barcelona jail cell Wednesday. His death at age 75 was an apparent suicide, authorities claimed.
McAfee was found dead just hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the US to face charges for failing to file taxes from 2014-2018.
A larger-than-life character whose outrageous pronouncements and antics inspired numerous film and TV projects, McAfee in his later life was buoyed by his security software fortune and his early investments in cryptocurrency. He became a global nomad, living in several countries and traveling the world on a yacht while dodging numerous law authorities in the US, Central America, and the Caribbean.
McAfee’s body was reportedly discovered at the Brians 2 penitentiary in northeastern Spain, where efforts to revive him failed.

As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.
This is actually an uncommonly jam-packed and intriguing roster of content for Bezos’s outfit. The list this month is highlighted by the release of The Expanse season 5 on Dec. 16. The beloved sci-fi series made the jump from Syfy to Amazon last year and things went well enough that it’s coming back for more. That returning show is complemented by another new genre series. The Wilds premieres on Dec. 11 and will follows a group of teenage girls lost (or Lost) on a deserted island.
Amazon’s original movies in December are just as intriguing. Riz Ahmed plays a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing in Sound of Metal on Dec. 4. Rachel Brosnahan stars as a mother...

Hard as it is to believe with everything going on right now, but Christmas is only about five weeks away, and the streaming market is already looking crowded. Although Netflix can probably expect to continue their dominance over subscribers through the end of 2020, Amazon Prime are releasing some notable titles for the last month of the year, including original films like I’m Your Woman and new episodes of The Expanse.
In terms of the former, it stars Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in a picture about a woman who has to go on the run after her husband gets into trouble with his business partner. We’ll also be seeing the much-anticipated Sound of Metal, which features Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer who develops hearing loss. This one will receive a limited theatrical release before heading to Amazon on December 4th. And elsewhere, viewers can expect...

Welcome to Trailer Watch, a regular feature that helps put the spotlight on series that may fly under the radar in the crowded Peak TV landscape. Each installment will explain what the show is and why it looks interesting. This week it's Showtime's four-part documentary about hip-hop icons Wu-Tang Clan.
Showtime has been carving out a niche for non-fiction storytelling with its documentary films and programming like Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee, Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic and Burn, M*therfucker, Burn. Sacha Jenkins, the director of that searing documentary about the L.A. community's response to the police ...

The wild, weird story of anti-virus software mogul John McAfee is undoubtedly cinematic. There has already been one documentary about his strange life (“Gringo: The Dangerous Life Of John McAfee“), and way back in 2013, two different feature films were in development: one from “Crazy, Stupid, Love” duo John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, and another from a company called Impact Future Media.

For anyone who really wanted a movie about John McAfee, the anti-virus software mogul who basically went balls to the wall crazy in Belize, I have some very good news. Someone's going to make a movie about it. The movie will be about the time Wired magazine writer Joshua Davis went to visit McAfee and McAfee was just all sorts of crazy, holed up in a compound with teenage girls in bikinis and bath salts. Lots of bath salts. And not for taking baths.
The movie is to star Johnny Depp as John McAfee, which sounds like a good fit. Most of my favorite Depp roles are him on drugs, most famously as Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote Bad Santa and I Love You Phillip Morris, and it will be written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski,...
