They want the formula
nogodnomasters8 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a bad teaser and then takes about an hour to get back there. Mario (William Baldwin) and his brother (Michael Madsen) have escort Blake (Cassie Howarth) and drug designer Eric (Iván González) locked in the trunk of their vehicle leaving Las Vegas. After a bit, we discover they both have "cheated" Mario out of money. There are some minor flashbacks and some contemporary action, but for the most part, it is two people in the trunk, which is twice as good as one person in a trunk or grave, or car, especially when one is eye candy. But not that much better.

The film was still boring.

Guide: F-word. Brief sex, brief nudity.

Fairly horrendous
latinfineart20 March 2020
The thing about William Baldwin is that just his presence and hi smirk is somewhat entertaining to watch. The problem with Michael Madsen is that he brings a smugness to every role that got tired 20 years ago. And it has become very, very difficult to watch him for the past two decades. There's really not much to this film. Not much of a story, incredibly claustrophobic, and there's really just not much there. I would say it's a Hollywood version of an empty suit. Please spend your time seeking entertainment elsewhere. Do yourself a favor.

VIEWS ON FILM review of 2 Graves in the Desert
burlesonjesse57 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"You tired?" I was for sure, especially at the halfway point of watching 2020's 2 Graves in the Desert (my latest review). If I had to view "Graves" again, I'd probably opt to attend a trying insurance seminar or maybe even a lecture on fine quilting.

So yeah, in 2 Graves in the Desert there's virtually no thrills even though it is billed as a thriller (talk about false advertising). What's on screen is basically sadistic, bloody, and for eighty-four minutes, almost pointless. And yes, it doesn't help that the soundtrack of "Graves" is that annoying and cliched, direct-to-video spy music.

Anyhow, 2 Graves in the Desert involves a man and a woman who wake up to become trapped in the back of a truck. We as the audience don't quite know why because "Graves" has what feels like the bare bones of a plot (something about being nobbled for drugs and quote, unquote, "the formula").

Cassie Howarth and Ivan Gonzalez play the cramped hostages while Michael Madsen and William Baldwin play the bestial kidnappers (Billy Baldwin looks so much like brother Alec now I thought it was Alec).

"Graves" primarily consisting of back and forth discourse in a confined space, focuses less on the star power of Madsen and Baldwin and more on unknowns Howarth and Gonzalez. That gives 2 Graves in the Desert a claustrophobic feel but it also makes the film tedious and a bit of a chore to sit through.

With a couple of flashbacks, some stylized direction from Benjamin Goalabre (a rookie helmer who thinks he's being innovative), callous beatings, and references to the flick Titanic (whah?), "Graves" is sadly the antipode of being entertained. With the potential to be something more diverting, 2 Graves in the Desert would rather dig its own cinematic "barrow". Rating: 1 and a half stars.

Just Awful
larrys34 March 2020
Don't waste your time or money on this horrific and nonsensical film.

It becomes a cliche to say that a movie is the worst of all time, but this has to be one of the worst I've ever seen. Excruciating to even sit through it all but I did finish it so I could write this review.

As you might expect, plenty of violence and crude language throughout. Not that it would matter here, but there were no subtitles on the DVD.

Some actors career sunk to new lows
kaefab4 March 2020
This movie was pretty bad in all aspect of the term.. but Madesen and Baldwin who must have gained 100 pounds and is far from the hot young men he once was.... are awful in every way.

Don't waste your time on this stinker!
psxexperten8 March 2020
It is truly unbelievable how this movie managed to get released. It is with all honesty really really bad. The acting was probably the biggest disappointment. While turning on this movie I didn't have many expectations. It was supposed to be the movie you play in the background while doing something else. But this movie could not even fulfill this role. It was cringe worthy and honestly just sad to look at.

Fairly Interesting

Isn't as bad as some make it out to be, but as one reviewer put it, you probably won't watch it again. The guy's accent was terrible, and, like the rest of the movie, not all that believable.

ALLEGORY IS A THING IN FILM or THE VIEW FROM INSIDE
sharonkathleenjohnson17 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Ye nay-sayers have no film background. Stuck in a trunk is an ultimate allegorical film motif--what could be more hopeless? What would transpire between a man and woman (especially) in those dire moments--these are dilemmas you only present to a savvy and dialogue-driven screenwriter. The dialogue covers much territory, including both early-and-late-in-life scenarios (the suicide-murder of the father, the vaguely Russian-satellite-country "formula," and the misbegotten unborn child's paternity). The plot is nitty-gritty,convoluted, and there's even a modicum of Freudian psycotherapeutic theory thrown in. Meaning-heavy like Bergman. A Thinking Person's Movie all the way down the line, full of life's worst rather than best moments--why, I felt like my life was a casual carousel ride in comparison. DAS BOOT comes to mind. All in all, extremely gripping but my one question, did he survive the shot while wrapped in that blanket? AND WHAT DID HE WRITE ON HER ABDOMEN? Questions that haunt me two days later. And let's have a sequel focused on the baby's own inevitably treacherous and iniquitous life! With the one-brief-flashback-ending that explains everything. Beautiful and thought-provoking, this film proves that real art is real--it's about reality and it teaches you something. I salute this writer.

DVD sound is terrible and no subtitles!!
enfinity2 October 2021
I really don't understand when a movie is released without subtitles/closed captioning for those who normally have difficulty hearing.

Then, releasing a movie that has a bad soundtrack (where the sound goes from loud to very low) instead of evening it out, is just unwatchable.

I really don't know much about what was going on, so I could only give it 2 stars.

It looked like it COULD be interesting, but just can't hear it.

it wasn't bad film its watchable but not great or worth watching over again
nikola1722 May 2020
Yeah I know why this film gets hates it got 2.6 rating everyone hates on this film but it does have potential I like those 2 brothers are very similar concept as gecko brothers From Dusk Till Dawn (Michael Madsen) & (William Baldwin) having a simple roles of themselves driving threw Mexico border while acting, kidnapping 2 people Blake (Cassie Howarth) & Eric (Iván González) tied up in van back of car boot. threw out film it's just Michael Madsen and William Baldwin driving laughing drinking driving threw out film but they both got a lot of chemistry together they are pretty laughable they got a lot of charisma and they were likeable but sametime they are bad guys I wished those 2 actors were in a different film not just driving threw out film on trunk I wished this was different film not in this threw out film it's just locked in the trunk of their

vehicle leaving Las Vegas. After a bit, we discover they both have "cheated" Mario out of money. There are some minor flashbacks and some contemporary action, but for the most part, it is two people in the trunk talking each other on IPAD or Tablet and theirs not much to talk about film because that's what it is basically that's what threw out film, I thought acting is good I liked all actors specially beautiful Cassie Howarth in film she did fine with her bad attitude and her tough female role she had but I wished this film could been better, something more to it rather then locked up on trunk talking and having flashbacks when you watch film you might like it because of those

2 guys but it got 2.6 rating saying it's really bad what did they expect? when they saw film if you saw trailer what it is then you know answer I am not kidding when you watch trailer it spoil it completely that's why I didn't watch trailer for film if I did I might hate film because trailer wasn't much trailer tells you everything believe me the only way you might like film is to watch film blindly because trailer tells you everything that's what I recommded for you to watch film in that way oh else trailer will spoil everything. acting performance of Michael Madsen & William Baldwin played a great part of film of their performance so much jokes to laugh at they had a great chemistry brothers type of character threw out film BUT I really wished this was different film not a film when 2 are just driving and they kidnapped 2 people in trunk show entire film in trunk while Michael Madsen & William Baldwin driving and drinking talking on IPAD I mean this could been in a different film NOT IN THIS I can't believe it at all I don't hate this film at all it's not worst but it's worth it of seeing Michael and William performance it's not film I would watch all over again and again once is enough to see this film that's it all I can say is read watch film avoid trailer that's all I can say.

The movie does come together in the end. Definitely not for everybody but who am I to judge other peoples creative outlets. Just hard to get past the seemingly never ending trunk ride. Almost like a Las Vegas spinoff of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, almost

Let's talk about 9 and 10 star reviews.
graves-scott2 June 2023
These days people will toss a 9 or 10 star review on just about anything when those kind of reviews should be reserved for movies that made a huge impact on you. Not for a movie like this train wreck just because an actor or two were better than average or because you want to flex your degree from a film school and talk about how there was a depth only you saw.

I'd love to see a score that ignores 9 and 10 star reviews to see some realistic numbers on a movie. Unless a movie sets a new standard for other movies to try and reach or it literally makes you change your point of view because it had that kind of impact on you the 9s and 10s should never be used.

Great Suspense
dplanat28 April 2020
I really liked this very intelligent film. Not a lot of sets but a lot of ideas with long suspense and great actors. The young Ivan Gonzalez and Cassie Howarth are very good in front of the 2 big actors that are Michael Madsen and William Baldwin.

Two people trapped together in a trunk
Woodyanders13 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Eric (a solid and likeable performance by Ivan Gonzalez) and Blake (a pleasingly feisty portrayal by Cassie Howarth) find themselves bound and gagged together in the trunk of a pick-up. It turns out the pair's abductors have very unpleasant plans in store for them.

Director Benjamin Goalabre relates the gripping story at a constant pace, generates a good deal of claustrophobic tension, takes time to develop the two main characters, and makes nice use of the dry and desolate Nevada desert landscape. Moreover, Michael Madsen and William Baldwin play their colorfully slimy bad guy roles with delicious lip-smacking wicked relish. A nifty little flick.
