Western filmed by English director
rogerbrenton-208583 December 2017
I came across this film and greatly impressed that it was an English director who had made an independent film in America. The location shots bring about a rich color to the film along with the camera work. The story line acted with fine performances. Previous films by the director are also in the Western tradition and well worth investigating.

Vermijo - Quite a Surprise
ljbrumbya4 December 2017
I was quite surprised at how authentic VERMIJO came across on screen. A storm is brewing in the town of Vermijo. Frank Tyler's plan was simple. He was going to dispense good, old-fashioned justice - one bullet at a time. There are more twists and turns to this story and this town to more than fill an hour. Director Paul Vernon keeps his movie moving at a brisk pace. His actors bring great depth to each of their roles. Paul Vernon's awesome cinematography provides fresh perspectives on how to look at the Old West to make it come alive for a new audience. Watching VERMIJO transports its audience back to the golden age of television Western series. To that end it succeeds on every level.

Great Western
clive-hand22 April 2018
I am a big western fan and really enjoyed this film. A classic western by independent filmmaker. What is amazing is that despite what must have been a very limited budget, British filmmaker Paul Vernon was able to travel to Arizona and produce a film with such had high production value. The locations were fantastic with excellent cinematography. There was an authentic feel and look to the film. A good story, lots of action, realistic fight sequences and some good acting. I look forward to Paul's next production.

Bad
terrylgraham23 January 2018
The acting was wooden, the story line unbelievable, the script cliche-ridden. The only reason I watched it through was that I thought it would turn out to be a send-up of the western genre.

Don't waste your time
rodhackenflasch7 December 2017
This thing was ridiculous. Cliché-polluted horribly bad acting, no character development, and a totally weak plot. It could have passed for an SNL comedy skit at times. The last ten minutes is a joke - a stupid plot twist, then an aging grandpa (shot once in the chest and once in the leg) fights the bad guy and wins. His grandson fights the other bad guy (who has a gun in his hand the whole time), and wins. Idiotic.

Guess I'm Spoiled

Couldn't get past the opening dialogue, though. The opening scenery was pretty, though. Guess I'm spoiled by HOSTILES, WOMAN WALKS AHEAD, and other films of the like.

Fantastic! !! !!!
Call-Me-Mr-Smith10 November 2019
This is a true masterpiece, following closely in the footsteps of giants such were John Ford and Sam Peckinpah. And then, add Chris Nolan, because, why not? I hope that all of the cast members are nominated for the Academy Awards, as they reached the pinnacle of the art, eclipsed only by the skillful directing. The novel concept of co-directing-lead-acting is refreshing and makes sense - who can better determine good angles for the lead, than the (co)director. The script is crisp, warranting the entry to the Goodreads' Essential Reading List. Pound for pound, this movie looks like one of the Tarantino's epics, only better thanks to the superb action sequencing... Now, as the laughing gas that I was inhaling for medicinal purposes dissipates, I start to realise that I did not like this movie that much. The fanatical upvoting, set the bar so high that one can only gauge this movie in the most scrutinous way. Because of that, 1/10...

Solid performances and splendid photography
philethomas28 December 2017
Sure, this is a western in the traditional sense and in that regard I can't complain about a plot that falls into the well-worn mold of good versus evil. After all, variations on that theme have probably dominated the genre from the start. They just have different twists and approaches. And I sometimes have to remind myself that hey, remember, this is fiction. I don't expect everything to play out as it would in real life. So in that regard I think the storyline was quite solid. I've certainly seen plenty of big-budget productions that stretch the believability factor far more than Vermijo.

The acting, in my opinion, was quite good considering the likelihood that some of them had probably not played in that many films before. They delivered their lines in a natural, believable way which corresponded with their facial expressions, body movements and whatever scene they found themselves in. Good job by all.

It would be nice if more credit would go to independent films such as this one while taking into account the small budget I'm assuming they must have been restricted by. The absence of elaborate sets in Vermijo is largely offset by a creative use of that available. The fine camerawork captures the natural landscape splendidly and the scenes follow one another in a tight and professional manner. Very impressive with a nice balance between action scenes and sweeping vistas.

Pretty much has it all!
tranquility_wildwesttown24 February 2018
If you're a lover of great traditional westerns then this one fits the bill. The story is about a young drifter who arrives in Vermijo & before too long he is framed for the death of one of the Town Marshall's brothers. With a full quota of fistfights & gunfights, & with some great acting & stunt work. Beautifully filmed on location in Arizona.

Classic Western Film Drama from the old school of Westerns
wetladz3 December 2017
VERMIJO - An encouraging review I watched this western with open eyes and decided I would not be put off by all the negativity and destructive comments from some reviewers - who seemed to me to be simply having a bad day! In my opinion this western excels as a serious attempt at a western from a first time filmmaker. I gather it is an amateur independent project and therefore to compare it with the likes of Unforgiven and other Hollywood westerns would be foolish, as it simply cannot compete on that level. Some of the comments made, I believe, are unfounded. The landscape settings and photography are both beautiful, the acting is competent at every level with actually one or 2 powerful performances. The costumes and props are mostly authentic. The story is a traditional western tale of revenge with plenty of action and some well choreographed fight sequences, and a great twist at the end. Do not pass VERMIJO by, or overlook it, if you are in any way a fan of westerns. It may not have the budget or the acting talent of Hollywood westerns like The Magnificent Seven (remake), but in its own way this smart indie western stands tall, and the production team and cast should be proud in their attempt at keeping the Spirit of the Western Alive and Kicking!

An indie gem!
leatherlevis27 June 2018
This is great little gem of an indie produced western. Okay it does not have a vast budget - if any at all - and the actors are not your Hit List Hollywood types. But you can feel the passion and dedication of all the cast and crew in what is quite a slow burner and different type of western. Some of the reviews on here are just plain unfair in my opinion and this 60 minute short should be given a chance. No stagecoaches or big set gun fights in this well filmed, simmering drama of discord in the border town of VERMIJO in the 1880s. But the spirit of John Ford graces it and the spirit of the western lives on!

John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart Would Be Proud
johndporter10 March 2018
I've worked with Paul Vernon on other projects, so I was eager to see what he had done In VERMIJO. I was extremely impressed: his cinematography is characteristically splendid, and his ability to incorporate flashbacks is astonishing. The acting is subtle and riveting--especially that of Adam Gold, who is undoubtedly one of the best bad men I've ever seen. I don't want to reveal the ending, but I will say that Tom Doniphon and Ransom Stoddard would be proud of this movie.

Very good film with a good story
leviguy50120 June 2019
What it is with these other armchair reviewers and their moronic comments. Stick to the artsy fartsy trash or the shoot em ups. This is a very good film with a good story. Plain and simple. Everyone is an armchair critic nowadays with zero validity or logic and with a 3 year olds attention span. If you don't like it get out there and make a film yourself!

wetladz18 February 2018
At times you feel that the western is dead, But when you watcha movie like this that tries its very best to recapture some of the spirit of the west it is good to see that the western is still alive and kicking. Some fine photography, strirling performances, rousing music and an exciting twist makes for a fun 60 minute ride into the old west!

Worst film I've ever seen...
frankhinlopen2 February 2019
I have to believe the high ratings are from the actors parents. Terrible acting. Half the dialogue was used to describe events in the story. We were actually laughing after a while. Infantile. Horrible unrealistic dialogue. Weak cliche of a story. Nothing gritty or clever. Even the attempts at creating artistic shots fell way short. Looked more like a middle school film project.

Utterly fantastic movie filmed and edited by one man!
atholl-5343423 May 2021
When you understand how much work goes into making a movie on a very low budget you appreciate even more how utterly fantastic this western is. One man and his camera and editing software not a huge team, one person put this all together and I think it is a truly superb movie, nicely written and acted. Highly recommended. Folks this is not a big budget movie so consider that before leaving any negative comments. Those I've read are very unfair. To even get this movie on Amazon and IMBD is a great achievement in itself. It really is an amazing achievement and a great western to watch. So ignore the negative reviews and enjoy!

Top-Notch Entertainment For Fans Of Westerns
mikalado28 January 2021
VERMIJO may have a storyline not dissimilar to many western-genre films... good vs. evil... but its beautiful photography, clever writing, and memorable acting set it apart. With an effective mix of gritty dialogue, fist fights, and gun play, this fast-paced film does not disappoint.

Featuring some talented performers who bring to the effort an impressive combination of skill and experience, VERMIJO offers plenty of action, suspense, and breathtaking scenery,. Clever writing, under the masterful direction of Paul Vernon, holds the viewer's interest from the opening scene to the last... with a surprising twist at the end that's worth the wait.

Fans of westerns... and anyone who appreciates fine filmmaking... will find much to admire here. A dying genre was given a much-needed shot in the arm with VERMIJO, and it's time to saddle up for a wild ride!
