Can Rimmer find a better life in an alternate universe?
Tweekums17 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
When the Red Dwarf encounters a strange lesion in time and space the crew find that every time they make a decision they find themselves doing the thing that they decided not to do. After some difficulties they manage to get together and it emerges that the events may be linked to a 'Quantum Skipper' that Kryten invented. This enables the user to skip between realities… Rimmer decides to use it because he is sure that any other reality will be better than his current one. He visits many other realities and at first sight many of them are better but each has a flaw that makes Rimmer decide he must keep looking elsewhere.

As this successful season comes to a close viewers are treated to a great episode; the story is full of classic Red Dwarf moments and contains a guest appearance that is a real treat for the fans. The early scenes where 'wrong' choices are made was a lot of fun; especially as Lister took advantage of the situation to get the Cat to do things he would never usually do. The second half of the episode, which focuses on Rimmer visiting alternate universes was a treat too; the highlight was seeing Norman Lovett return as Holly, the ship's computer, in one of the realities. Other realities visited include one with lots of Listers, one where Cat is replaced by Rat… and all his relatives and one that seems perfect until he learns who the Ship's captain is. I must admit when I first saw the CGI Rat I wasn't too impressed but soon found him to be very funny. The cast was on good form; especially Chris Barrie who is great as Rimmer, who has the main role in the story. Overall I'd say this was a fine episode that I'm sure most fans will really enjoy. After this impressive season I'm sure we'll be getting 'Red Dwarf XIII'; I certainly hope we do.

Strong episode and perfect end to series 12

Red Dwarf encounters a rift in space and time that results in an anomaly.... no sorry a weird thing effecting the crew's actions.

I enjoyed this episode for the sci-fi concept, character humour and excellent fan service.

The story a very simple character driven affair involving Rimmer's ambition. This combined with a cool sci-fi concept presents the opportunity for his character to do some soul searching throughout multiple universes.

There is a consistently strong level of humour which although contains nothing particularly fresh or original, it puts well known characters in the spotlight and plays to the funny aspects of their personalities. Essentially, it's funny because it's them.

Much like the previous episode M-Corp it dishes up some great fan service, particularly with some returning characters and dialogue referencing the very first episode of Red Dwarf.

All performances are excellent with Chris Barrie and Craig Charles on top form and Danny-John Jules, Robert Llewelyn, Norman Lovett, Mac McDonald giving great support.

Warning: Spoilers
Ace Rimmer knew it, and even our own Arnold Rimmer came to know it, there is no other universe where he'd be happier than where he is now, what are the chances however of having infinite universes and yet getting back to your own after not very many button clicks? Even if he clicked that button 200,000 times, I can't imagine the device still working after that the chance of it happen is infinity to one!

Warning: Spoilers
There is an element of Skipper that recycles concepts from past episodes. This is a sort of greatest hits.

An anomaly has caused a tear in the space-time continuum or as Rimmer views it. Something weird is going on.

The weird thing are multiverses where all the alternate choices take place. Rimmer uses a Quantum Skipper that Kryten invented to look for a better reality.

This episode marks the return of Holly and also Captain Hollister as Rimmer visits various Red Dwarf crews. The loudest audience cheers were for Norman Lovett.

Not entirely original but the episode was good fun.
