For Steven Suptic, the "alternative lifestyle" is the way to live. That descriptor, delivered with eye-winking humor, serves as the tagline for Sugar Pine 7, a project Suptic has focused on since leaving his previous gig at SourceFed and linking up with Rooster Teeth earlier in 2017. On its surface, Sugar Pine 7 appears to be a standard vlog channel, but watch any of its videos long enough and you'll discover both its satirical nature and its absurd characters. Beyond Suptic, the Sugar Pine 7 cast includes Clayton "Cib" James, James DeAngelis, and Autumn Farrell. Dive into their adventures, and you'll discover a world where anything goes -- so long as it's sufficiently irreverent.
Tubefilter: How does it feel to have one million subscribers on your channel? What do you have to say to your fans?
Steven Suptic: We haven't had much time to really even think about it. It hasn't exactly set in for us yet,...

Group Nine, a portfolio of four digital media brands launched on the heels of a $100 million investment by Discovery Communications in October, presented yesterday evening for the first time at the Iab’s Digital Content NewFronts. All told, Group Nine’s brands -- food and travel-themed Thrillist; left-leaning news site NowThis; The Dodo, about all things animals; and science-focused Seeker -- deliver 4.3 billion monthly video views, said CEO Ben Lerer.
(Group Nine originally launched with YouTuber Philip DeFranco’s SourceFed network in tow, which it subsequently shuttered, spurring DeFranco to launch his own crowdfunded news network).

Last week, Philip DeFranco announced his decision to take a week off from his YouTube channel in order to give himself the time to sort out some “personal and business stuff” in his life. Now, we know about some of the “business stuff” he spoke of. Tubefilter has learned that Group Nine Media, the Discovery-backed venture that holds control of several major media brands, will shut down DeFranco’s SourceFed network while also rebranding Seeker Daily as the YouTube hub of NowThis News.
The word out of SourceFed HQ is that layoffs were announced last week, with the SourceFed, SourceFedNERD, and People Be Like channels all getting the axe. In order to commemorate what might be the last SourceFed video ever, the offbeat news channel brought in several of its former hosts, including Elliott Morgan and Trisha Hershberger, for a very special episode of its Table Talk series.

On March 15th, Philip DeFranco told his viewers he needed a week-long break. The popular commentator and vlogger, who is one of the most ubiquitous members of the YouTube community, cited “personal and business stuff,” including “things that could prevent me from making [The Philip DeFranco Show] in the future,” as the reasons behind his hiatus. He noted that words he shared with his viewers were “as much as I can tell you legally.”
Since he posted that video, his fans have tried to figure out what exactly is going on. The general consensus is that something is rotten in the state of DeFranco, and his relationship with his bosses seems to be fraught.
To get an idea of what’s going on, it’s important to understand the business structure under which DeFranco Creative, the studio that produces The Philip DeFranco Show and SourceFed, operates. A landmark 2013 deal saw Discovery acquire DeFranco Creative through its Revision3 network,...

For those who find the main SourceFed channel to be not-quite geeky enough for their tastes, SourceFedNERD is a prime destination. Nerd, which launched in 2013 as the latest extension of Philip DeFranco's digital brand, has surpassed one million subscribers by providing its viewers with news about pop culture franchises, entertaining tabletop gaming sessions, and a copious amount of alcohol consumption. Beyond those content categories, Nerd also appeals to its fans by featuring a diverse cast of witty hosts. Here's one of those hosts -- Sam Bashor -- as well as SourceFedNERD Programming Director Joel Rubin on the big returns their channel has seen.
Tubefilter: How does it feel to have one million subscribers on Nerd? What do you have to say to your fans?

Some well-known SourceFed team members have branched out from the news network to create their own channel. Bree Essrig, Matt Lieberman, and Steve Zaragoza launched the sketch comedy YouTube channel Nuclear Family on January 6, 2015.
Created in conjunction with Discovery Digital Networks, Nuclear Family will host parodies, humor segments, and musical comedy about recent pop culture, political, and cultural news. Segments will also include special guests like Allison Raskin and Gaby Dunn of the Just Between Us web series. All Nuclear Family content will live exclusively on YouTube for three days before moving to other platforms. The first sketch on Nuclear Family, a spoof video dubbed “People Try Heroin for the First Time,” features Essrig, Lieberman, Jeremy Azevedo, and Jessica Amal as two couples trying out the schedule 1 drug (but not for real).
"I feel like Nuclear Family will be something you’ve never really seen before on YouTube,” said Zaragoza in a release.

Since he introduced himself to the online video world as one of the original hosts of SourceFed, Elliott Morgan has worn a lot of different hats. We’ve followed him across his various gigs, and his latest one is his most ambitious yet: He performed an hour of stand-up for Premature, a comedy special produced by Supergravity Pictures and distributed through Vimeo On Demand. With Premature set to arrive, we chatted with Morgan about his voyage from SourceFed to stand-up. Here’s what he had to say about his journey:
Tubefilter: How did this thing happen?
Elliott Morgan: It came to be maybe a year ago. I’ve been doing stand-up for about 3 years. I started doing stand-up after I felt myself getting comfortable at SourceFed. I always loved stand-up and I tried to do it. I didn’t tell anyone. I was going to open mics and trying...

Elliott Morgan, who has recently been the man of a thousand hosting gigs, is getting ready to release his own stand-up comedy spectacular. Morgan, who’s showed up everywhere from SourceFed to Mental Floss to Mashable to Buzzr over the past year and a half, has made his special Premature available for preorder through Vimeo On Demand.
Premature, which was first announced back in August, was filmed at Los Angeles’ El Cid bar. It contains some of Morgan’s recent material and a professional polish. "For one whole hour, I told jokes I've been working on for the past few years, and dare I say, I changed the life of every single audience member there," said Morgan in a press release. "But seriously, this was an amazing experience and I'm excited to be bringing my comedy into a different medium than people are used to seeing."
