Cruelty Comes in So Many Forms
Hitchcoc26 May 2016
I love the character of Coyote. He is so sincere, even though he has lived through the school of hard knocks. In this episode, he is going to meet his birth mother. This sends Frankie into a tizzie. When the vacuous mom shows up, she mistakes Grace for Frankie. Since she is herself pretty and thin, she imagines Grace must be the mother. What transpires is a weird meal with some great schtick. There is a discussion of religion and a tacky plaster Jesus whose head gets knocked off. Grace's contribution has to do with her affection for her former lover whose wife is in the throes of Alzheimer's. This brings them to a critical juncture where she must decide whether to carry on, despite the potential cruelty of it all. Good episode.

Louisiana accent

I'm from Louisiana. This is literally the worst "impression" of Louisiana dialect /manners/mannerisms. This woman is a mockery of Baton Rouge. Louisiana is so much more than that uneducated guess (pun intended). This is not comedy.

Birthmother portrayal

Warning: Spoilers
I love this series, but tonight's portrayal of Coyote's birthmother was seriously off kilter. As a birthmother myself and as someone who has been involved with adoption reform and education for many years, I realize there are few women who are not interested in reunion, but why oh why did your show have to depict the rare one? Those of us who have lost our children to adoption have been giving voice to the realities of adoption for decades now. However, we constantly come up against the stereotyping that is not representative of the experience of a vast majority of birthmothers. I hope that, as your program continues to address the adoption theme, you will consult Concerned United Birthparents to inform your story.
