Daring premise, truly weak execution

"Closets" is a British 18-minute live action short film from 2015, so it is still relatively new and fresh. The writer and director is Lloyd Eyre-Morgan and this is a consequence of this little movie being included on a recent edition of the long-running Boys on Film franchise. And this also means that this is of course a gay short film, even if I hate that term as people aren't talking about hetero short films either as this somehow goes against the sense of equality. But anyway, you're getting my point. As for the film itself: It adds something new to the overdone genre of gay short films. But everything that goes beyond the generally funny idea of using closets for time travel here, was executed pretty shoddily. The film lacks artistic merit to the extent where it even dares to take itself seriously. The acting is truly underwhelming. The SciFi inclusion feels completely out of place in the face of the realistic aspects the film emphasizes. But the worst is like with so many other gay short films the fact that it feels never relevant, but all for the sake of it and this applies to the really shameless display of over-the-top homophobia early on, after 2 minutes or so already. Or later on the wrist-cutting / implied suicide scene that you find way too often in these films. It really does no justice to actual victims of homophobia, even makes them feel worse than they already do and plants dangerous ideas in their heads that the badly written (somewhat) happy ending can never make up for. On the contrary, it adds even more cringe. So yes this was a truly bad short and those who should be more embarrassed than the makers are those giving it awards attention even. Highly not recommended.
