"Okay, seeing as we've both lost an arm, I'd say we're about even!" Warning: Spoilers
Prepare to see some red... Well for a start this feels a little bigger and bolder in scope than the first Devilman mini-movie, it turns out that Akira's crazy friend Ryo isn't dead and that Akira's now a sexually aggressive jerk rather than the sweet gentle guy he was in "The Birth", as seen when he makes some very strange spontaneous rude comments to Miki about her knickers and boobs! That scene is really weird! Anyway after an excellent opening fight sequence where Akira as Devilman takes on the loathsome southern turtle demon "Jinman", a battle which forces him to destroy his own mother's captive wailing soul and many others in order to slay the fiend! The story then switches to another legendary figure among demon-kind, the mighty "Shiranu", a lethal harpy-like huntress who sets her sights on conquering Devilman as an example to all demons who would meld with a human, and I thought she was a really great character, the passionate voice actress just nailed it, and she's very powerful and fearsome-looking, her design is fantastic, like a somewhat angelic reflection of Devilman. And she's also something of a sympathetic villainess, you naturally just don't want to see such a beautiful magnificent creature loose against the cackling Devilman, at least I didn't. At first she summons demons of water and earth to terrorise the completely nude Miki and weaken her foe, the animation of these monsters and their abilities is beautifully animated and detailed, and also both of their voices are hilarious. He soon dispatches the pair and then the real fight begins as Shiranu grabs him in her gigantic talons which have the ability to neutralise his powers, but he manages to break free and the battle takes to the skies and becomes something truly epic with how well the animation flows so fast. That's what made Devilman so awesome! The brutal fight scenes alone made it an above average anime and the ones in this sequel are no exception. And then the clash takes an unexpectedly dramatic turn that ends in a strange draw as Shiranu, after fusing with the Taurus-like demon that declares his love for her in a very melodramatic moment that oddly humanises the demons, ends up dying just before delivering the killing blow and there endeth the movie! This is definitely a series that any horror fan should watch. They certainly have their flaws but goddamn, the creepy moments, grand enemies and gory action makes it all worth it! So that was Devilman the Demon Bird... Good s**t.
