SyFy Channel production values, at best.
pauldavidtaylor7 August 2016
At the time of my review this is carrying a 7.1 score on IMDb. I'm left wondering if the user votes on this movie are bought from some click-farm in India.

So the premise of the movie is a chump who is the ultimate beta- tester for a game studio who gets to beta test a new game, only to find out he is actually controlling someone else in real life. As events unfold the uber-beta tester decides to "do the right thing" even under penalty of death.

As you can imagine, a movie that mixes video games and real-life footage has to be brilliantly convincing. This is not the case. At all. This carries, at best, SyFy production values in a movie with terrible CGI, awful acting and the result is, shamefully, something the actors will have to live with for the rest of their lives.

The "biggest fight scene" tries to cash in on Daredevil and the likes, but the premise is so contrived (and the execution so poor/unconvincing) that you'll avert your eyes or start laughing.

Sorry click-farmers... this is horrible.

BTW: if you remain unconvinced that this is not even worthy of a TV Movie, please bear in mind that it grossed $9000 box-office. mmmkkay?

Not 7.1. Not unless that is a scale of shittiness.

An interesting gimmick, ruined by some terrible acting and dialogue
mzeronde9 August 2016
The movie had an interesting gimmick that was destroyed by some terrible acting and dialogue. The plot was decent, the initial set up and first 30 minutes were even suspenseful. I managed to watch the entire movie, but not without being ejected from my suspension of disbelief more than once. This was not because of a bad script, but because of terrible dialogue and the very bad acting of a few individuals. In particular, Kevon Stover, who reminded me of a poor man's Danny Trejo, was so cringe worthy and distracting that I was unsure whether or not he was added for comic relief. It seemed a waste of some passable d-list actors. I'm sorry, I rated it a 4, below average.

Campy gamer action flick. Just relax and enjoy it...Seriously!
transientdreams18 November 2017
Hey, it's just a fun, mindless romp of urban science fiction with a great plot, decent directing, some sketchy dialog, good and bad acting, and you can even write a love poem while watching it and never miss a thing.

There is even a very 'Ballsy' stoke of genius in this movie, in that the scene from about 104:12 to 110:12 is a continuous shot. 6 full minutes. That took guts. I have to respect anyone who would do that and be willing to risk the whole movie. There was obvious no real risk here, and that's probably why it worked.

For the whiners out there who constantly wail: "I want my 2 hours back!" "Worst movie ever!" "I walked out in the first 10 minutes."...Just shut the hell up. You really do NOT how to watch a movie using basic 'discernment' techniques rather than judging the hell out of it like an old, angry housewife.

See, discernment allows an evaluation to grow while a judgement puts an idea or concept inside a contemplative box where it can never evolve beyond that place within your own mind where you originally judged it. That is indeed the most wretched excess of a personal 'opinion'. It wastes everyone's time and energy. You reviewers who prattle on like wounded princesses here are seriously lacking in the most basic of intellectual evaluations skills and shouldn't even be posting your reviews with educated adults. Jesus...

So, in regards to ANY movie, when you see the trailer and read some professional reviews, you pretty much know what you're in for. But anyone who plays the 'princess-victim' of utter disappointment after spending a dollar at Red Box seriously needs to ease off the meds.

...or at LEAST take some creative writing classes.

I feel violated
karolis-peciulis14 August 2016
At first it looked like it will be an average level movie with a half decent plot, but moving through out the movie everything changed. From somewhat good film it became a low budged plot less porno without the porn. It was filled with plot holes, terrible writing and honestly there is no way the director/producer has actually seen any of this high school level content. I feel sorry for the actors who have tried to salvage this already sunken crapfest, but ended up devoured by this Frankenstein someone had the courtesy to call a movie. It is safe to assume that whoever wrote this THING has already committed suicide, since no sane person would ever think that this was even remotely close to decent.

This movie is not just bad, it's really bad!
armandox11 August 2016
I'm not the review-writer really, but after seeing this movie and the absurdly high rating it gets here on IMDb I just had to write my 50 cents worth. To sum up some things about this movie in short:

  • Acting: Poor/lacklustre/wooden/amateuristic - Directing: There was a director on set?! - Writing: Nice try, but utter fail - Production: Cheap

Guy is beta tester for a gaming company to find out he's controlling a real person (ex-employee turned against the company). If you like this premise alone, I strongly suggest you go and watch 'Gamer' because in that film this concept is executed 100 times better. Gamer and ex-employee turned avatar go against company, have a couple really slow-paced unbelievable fight-scenes towards the end. Director of gaming company has a popcorn-frenzy somewhere in the last part of the film... I mean really? Someone must really thought let's flip off our viewers and shove them some bs down their troath. Even for an Indie-movie with a low production budget this is an insult to nominal human intelligence in general, and they should have spend that money on repaving some road in Texas or something.

This movie is Into The Woods bad (and that movie was really bad). There's not a single thing that I can credit as being positive about this movie... Wel... some of the music was OK. You'll be craving the endtitles before the first 3rd of the movie has passed!

Like a low-budget beta version of "Gamer (2009)" really
Seth_Rogue_One12 August 2016
After seeing the rating for this on here (currently at 7.0, although I suspect that will change) I thought that this might actually be really good.

But uhm, let's just say I think the director have a lot of good friends who are kind with their ratings.

It's not completely awful, but it's not that great either.

I've always liked Larenz Tate so it's cool to see him in something new, so there is always that, and he hasn't aged a day in 20 years (he's 41 believe it or not).

He plays a gamer who's been given a beta version of the latest game bound to conquer global fandom, and the plot is decent enough but it's just such a low-budget film and that shows in every aspect of the movie.

First of all the "game" that he's playing looks like it's well over 10 years old, and it simply doesn't make any sense why they couldn't just use real footage in the game scenes instead. Then at least Larenz would have a clear reason to be so blown away by the details in the game.

And the "twist" about the game of course would have made A lot more sense too.

Kevon Stover is one of the bad guys, and his attempts at being so stereotypically tough would make even Hulk Hogan cringe. I suppose that could be intentional to get a bit of 90's video-game feel to the character. But yeah, he's a chippendale appearantly which doesn't come as a surprise at all.

The first hour is still semi-watchable if you manage to look past the flaws but the last 25 minutes is a bit of a drag to say the least.

I like b movies but damn
wemakefeelgoods6 August 2016
First off, I don't understand all the hate aimed at the people giving this movie a bad review. Come on.. it's bad.

Full of bravado and terribly weak story telling. To get this high of a ranking.. I call foul. Somethings broken in IMDb.

Second.. Graphics.. Poor.

Acting... Poor.

Writing... Completely predictable.

Directing... Now I'm not going to cut you down.. I've never tried to direct a movie. But damn, dude.. Your production values were pretty decent. Your actors were capable. And the cinematography was alright. So I'm thinking it comes down to you. I'm guessing your a nice guy, cause you should have reshot so many scenes and you know.. directed your actors.

There was nothing here worth watching. Ya, I know.. if I don't like it then don't. I honestly kept watching because I wanted to know how it earned such high reviews. But seriously man. This is bad. I mean, make a IMDb account just to complain about it's rating bad.

Totally unbelievable start to finish, especially the scene where a game maker.. someone who spends there life behind a screen and building the social dynamics needed to produce a game just happens to be able to kick 30 security officers butts in a row and walk on like it's just another Tuesday. (And that voice.. It's like watching a dumbed down duke nukem spoof)

Or how about the security officer holding his gun on the gamer while he lets him walk his puppet into the house and beat him. Right.. Sure.. everyone that dumb.

Sword scene on the roof while the blond stands emotionless and helplessly by.. wow man.. .. just wow.. There isn't enough testosterone in the world to excuse the ego here.

Someone in IMDb needs to look into this, seriously.. Things like this will ruin your credibility. This is a 3... max.

The only person here showing any acting chops at all was the gamer.. and he unfortunately couldn't hold up this pile. Koodos for trying though bro.

Not worth your time
bcprabhu2 August 2016
The movie starts with a seemingly interesting idea and that's the only good thing that I can say about it.

Unfortunately, as the story develops it turns to boring, amateurish cringe-fest. It's especially disappointing if you consider that Manu Bennett was in better shows (Spartacus, Arrow) and here you can see him in a lame role with lame fighting scenes and brain-cell destroying dialogues. To top that he still gives the best performance so you can imagine the rest of the cast.

I do not recommend watching it, unless you plan to use some mind-altering substance and even so it will probably be a bad experience.

In short: stupid storyline, half-baked concept, people with moronic behavior, badly choreographed and unrealistic fights.

good Idea with a bad implementation
viva-amego3 August 2016
Summary: Could have been a good movie but it had a very limited budget for an action movie making it very lame and lacking.

This a first person shooter game that mixed with reality. Its not a novel idea but you can get a good movie out of it. The movie had a really good interaction between the gamer and the characters.

FPS means a lot of gun shooting and action scenes but nothing of that happened. The action most of time without gun shooting and focus on hand to hand combat. The action scenes in general is below average just compare it with "Hardcore Henry" you will find a great difference in quality.Instead of the action scenes the movie is full of long conversations which in most of the time useless. This could have been used to make the movie a little bit realistic but it was a wasted opportunity. Most of the time a lot of unrealistic events happens with a lot plot holes.

So in the end I can say that it was a good story and the actors made some good job but the script and the film direction was a great mess. This may be due to limited production budget but in the end it really affected the quality of the movie.

Mind Games Forever
Pairic8 June 2020
Beta Test: Yes, its Mind Games Forever. Perhaps mixing the traditions of Inception and eXistenZ, Beta Test nevertheless makes its own mark on the SF gamer trope. We have a veritable War of the Gods, a CEO of a Gaming company in dispute with Chief Designer. An armed gang burst into the home of the Designer, insert a control device in the back of his neck and kidnap his wife.

Meanwhile the beta tester receives his new game to try out. Little does he know that he will be controlling the (now) flesh puppet Designer in real life. The first task of the game is to interrupt a bank robbery, killing the robbers and making off with the loot ...

MMA fighting, neck breaking, stabbing, shooting, even Samurai sword fights. This film has them all. The storming of the Bond-Villain's HQ results in an over-extended fight but this is a good SF Thriller. 7/10.

Read the reviews, don't look at the score
hkfreefree23 November 2016
The fact that this movie can get a 6.8 makes me lose faith in IMDBs system.

There is absolutely no way people would genuinely give this movie such a score giving its unbelievably low quality of production and lame pot.

If anyone is looking at the this movie on IMDb, be sure to READ THE REVIEWS, don't just look at the score.

The shots are badly planned, the plot is full of plot holes and the fighting is just so unbearably awful.

Simply look at the score distribution of this movie and you can clearly see how rigged it is.

This movie is one of the worst movie I've seen, if not the worst.

A lot of fun:) Do it!
protilius-862-77106126 December 2016
The actors & actresses aren't known names, but a few of them could be.

The script isn't the next Matrix, but the idea behind it is about as fun as it gets.

The action? Well… The action is the one thing that is hands down awesome. No corners get cut there. It's truly a worthy experience in the vein of some pretty classic 1990s action flicks (Blind Fury anyone? Come on… That's some premium B-Flick there!)

There's literally a lobby fight scene in Beta Test that actually holds the title for being the current "longest long take fight scene" on record. And yes… The camera work for it is fantastic (with quickly paced combat that is equally superb.)

One scene, all shot with a single camera… A lot of ass kicking… World record.

It was beautifully done. Indie film or not… That scene ruled like scenes from Equilibrium ruled.

The digital special effects won't be cutting edge in this experience, but they serve their purpose well enough to enjoy the idea at this film's core.

"Real life first person slave gaming."

Yes…

Feel free to re-read that.

"Real life first person slave gaming."

Sounds like a Black Mirror episode right?

Well… It could be.

You've heard of human trafficking right?

Well… This film's concept takes being kidnapped to the next level. The technological device used in this story literally shelves a person's ability to control their own body, and then puts it into the control of a gamer. The victim will be fully awake after the chip is installed, but they won't be able to speak unless "their player" tells them to, they can't even turn their own head without a controller swipe to make it happen.

When a person is chipped they're effectively helpless. Just a remote controlled human being at the mercy of their player.

The player of course gets to control & watch everything the avatar does through a TV in the comforts of their own home. All of the fun… None of the risks or consequences for their avatar's actions though.

As we'll find out, the main character Creed is one of many people that becomes a part of an elaborate plot ultimately controlled by… (Drum roll) You guessed it, an evil CEO with an appetite for anarchy.

Simple, yet oh so effective for moving our plot along right?

I must say though… When the fight scenes are as good as they are in this film, I honestly stop caring about tiny details like a deep plot. I'm in it for the bone crunches and the one liners.

I don't question the rationality of the protagonist anymore… I just accept that they need to be put down like a dog and move on.

Beta Test delivers that kind of action flawlessly too.

You really don't expect it either. I felt a bit sucker punched by the awesomeness of Beta Test's delivery (thanks to my naturally cynical disposition toward low budget indie films of course.)

The film was quite good, and most notably… I didn't feel a need to shove glass through my eyes 5 minutes into it.

It was fun. It kept a solid pace in its timing, managed to come off extremely polished, and didn't hold back on the "odes" to all of the things that gamers love.

Whether it be real time action or CGI sequences showcasing the excitement, Beta Test certainly caters to gamer culture with a slew of welcomed detours.

It's very Doom in its delivery at times, but not annoyingly so, and it does well keeping a good balance between live action and digital animation as the film unfolds. They don't beat the first person camera view to death either, it serves its purpose, and the live action scenes then offer a great counter balance to the CGI.

As a gamer, I found Beta Test to be quite enjoyable on my first and even second viewing, there's a lot of hidden laughs and obvious cultural zings to enjoy alike.

Beyond the gamer culture though, I actually still find myself chuckling at Creed's cheesy one liners as I think back on the many moments he finds the time to make silly comments. (He deserves some kind of medal. I blew a drink out of my nose while watching the bank heist segment.)

The only thing that makes this film cooler than it already is, is when the soundtrack turns out with unexpected nuggets of awesomeness like it does.

Julien-K's approach to the Ost was a great companion for this entertaining ride, their style of production ranges from grinding industrial to smooth cloak and dagger ambiances throughout the experience, and their contributions are truly worthy of noting in this ocean of "indie awesomeness" that appears to be coming our way.

Idk.. I guess I'm a hug dork, because I love this film. I think others will too.

There's no I in VR
kosmasp18 February 2021
Then again this is not supposed to be VR now is it? The idea in general is quite intriguing to say the least. Unfortunately this does not have the budget to completely run wild with its idea. So we get visuals that are quite hard to watch - and not in a good sense either.

Of course since this pretends that the simulation is in its early stages it tries to get away with that. It's up to you to say if that actually is the case or has been achieved. Having the very charismatic Manu Bennett in one of the lead roles, but deriving him of showing emotions most of the time might not have been the best idea either ... still since I dig weird movies and this is low budget I did cut it some slack ... if you are able to do so too, you may as well engage ...

Wasted 2 hours of my life

Warning: Spoilers
Warning: Do not read if you are going to buy this movies, because you will change your mind.

I pick up this film because by looking at its title, I thought it will be similar to Video Game High School.

However, Beta Test is just an action movies which contain a lot of fighting scene. I am not interested in this genre. Not suitable for children or young gamer because of many violent scenes. I highly not recommend this.

For the actor, there are nothing special, except the technical support girl who we never see in person.

The lesson I learn from this movie is: "Please respect your technical support, they are doing their best, even risk their live to help you".

Monstrosity
davram-5697129 August 2016
I have seen many awful movies in my lifetime but, I think this one tops them all.

The concept of the movie was well thought out however, the execution had put me into a deep state of disgust. Without giving any spoilers, this is the best I can do to describe this monstrosity that someone decided to call a "movie". All of the downfalls of this movie were in the details and simple concepts that didn't seem to get relayed into the final release. My friends and I had chosen to watch this movie due to it having a fairly good rating and the interesting concept. All we could say when we finished the movie was how we could never get that hour and a half of our life back. All in all, good concept but very amateur execution.

So much potential
absenm-10-47526023 December 2016
I had hopes for this movie, but it actually made it on my worst top ten of worst of all time. Being a person in the computer and gaming community I thought it would be fun. Even if inaccurate. It insulted me. It was terriable. And I can give a hundred reasons why. It was just so bad. The concept was there. But it fell apart immediately. It had an interesting plot, but the story is just insulting. It is a total fail. Most terriable movies have no plot. This has plot but a slap in the face to any movie goer. You can't even watch this drunk. I would site many things, but I don't wanna run into the spoiler aspects of reviews. Imagine spoiling a movie as bad as rotten lettuce sitting for three weeks in your garbage and taking a whiff of that smell.

Do yourselves a favor and avoid this movie.

Messy plot, flat characters, bad acting, terrible dialogue and laughable fighting scenes are just a few of the movie's problems. I'm amazed I actually managed to watch it from beginning to end. It's absolutely pointless - there's no depth in the movie whatsoever.

Virtual Conspiracy
solemnphilosopher12 September 2016
I must agree with recent reviewers and say that Beta Test is an awful low-budget film. I was also deceived by the positive rating.

A gamer beta tests a new game. However, in reality he is controlling a real person and causing him to break into a real bank. It is an interesting premise, but the execution is a complete miss.

It is not even entertaining from a campy perspective. The dialogue tries hard to sound gamer-like, but it mostly just made me cringe. It seems like non-gamers were writing lines that they think gamers would say.

The people behind the film must have implanted a chip into some people and controlled them to give their film a high rating.

If you are interested in seeing some similar, I recommend checking out the cult-classic film ExistenZ instead.

Hopefully the worst movie this year...
corneliussenespen8 August 2016
Some times a year you just end up with one of those C-class movies, and this time it was Beta Test. Though the plot was quit interesting (the obvious reason why I watched it; almost as from an Ernest Cline novel), the movie in total was awful. The acting was lousy (cheap pron stars?) and the director obviously had better things to do than being on the set; no drive, no mind twisting turns. Nothing but amateur fighting to keep the movie afloat.

Highlight? Only 83 minutes of your life gone.

3/10 for being a movie the Cohen brothers, J.J.Abrahms or the likes could turn into something quite cool.

Good overall production
megrew13 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
When I first heard about Beta test I thought of gamer. It came out awhile ago, had an all star cast with a big budget and looked good, but the story lacked. If you took that budget and put it into this story it would be intense. That being said I can appreciate a movie for what it is, not just what it could be. Overall I felt it was a good movie working with what it had, I'll excuse the gaming graphics if for no other reason than to make the player believe he is playing a game since his character is widely known to the public. I like the political takes in the movie, again something not normally seen in a big budget movie. Biggest con if you can consider it one is, that like most movies, the big bad guy in a suit some how gets the better of the protagonist. (Who served 2 tours, if I remember correctly. Not overly political, serious, or goofy, has a good general mix.

One of the stupidest and worst movies I've seen in more than ten years
Ravelair8 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Bad acting, bad camera work, actors that look like they were taken straight out of comedies that parody action movies, bad animation that is supposed to be a video game.

That and more is what you should expect from "Beta test".

Do you know how "Birdemic" is so bad that it's good? This is sort of like that except it's just bad. It feels as if the movie had two teams making it - one that wanted it to be a serious action movie and another that wanted it to be an action comedy, sort of a spoof of a real movie.

It's filled with clichés, up to a point where the main bad guy says "So its time for the monologue?" and he proceeds to monologue up until the very predictable end. Possibly the worst of all, during a fight scene - a main character fights some bad guys while others are slowly walking down some stairs or simply standing around and gawking at their comrades being taken out, one by one.

Predictable, boring and nonsensical action sequences are also very common with 100% of the car chases or characters driving cars is replaced with the horrific animations that are supposed to simulate real life while they look like bad video presentations made by directors teenage son. Fights end as you would expect with the bad guys losing through insane choices that no real person would do and "killed" by just one punch while the protagonist could take on a thousand.

In one of these "missions", the main character is tasked with PROTECTING A SCHOOL SHOOTER. Yes, that's right - protecting a school shooter who is apparently also forced by some evil guys to kill children. There is never a reason given for this nor any sane explanation which leads me to believe its a blatant tear jerking scene that has no place in the movie.

The gamer aspect will blow any gamers mind. It as inaccurate and low effort as it can be I suppose. The low budged this movie has really shows while you watch the "super immersion" game sequences.

Beta Test is agonising to watch. The only reason I give this a rating above 1 is that you may find this movie funny while watching it drunk with some friends on a couch. It honestly bothers me that it somehow achieved a rating of 7.

These other reviews are clearly a minority of haters!
firebaby-127148 August 2016
BETA TEST is an indie action movie that

1.Homaged 90s movies that I loved growing up. It embraced the good and the cheesy elements of those movies. You've got the rescue the damsel plot, villain in the top of his castle or HQ, the big loud James Bond henchman, the cheesy one-liners, the slower fighting style, everything.

2.It played with some relevant social themes including gun violence, greed, corruption of the media, video game culture, dependency on technology, etc.

3. RECORD FOR LONGEST SINGLE SHOT FIGHT SCENE! over 6 minutes. SO AWESOME!

Great music, well edited fight sequence, good story flow... I think that's enough to give it AT LEAST a 7. But to me this movie is a 9!

IF YOU ARE INTELLIGENT YOU WILL SEE THE DEPTH OF THIS MOVIE. IF YOU ARE NOT, ALL YOU WILL SEE IS LOW-BUDGET ACTION MOVIE. THE END.

Decent action film
anthonyandsandy29 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Beta Test is a decent action film with a small similarity to that of Tron(1982)just that a person from our world is trapped in the gamer's world and has to do their bidding.

What we have here is Max as stated above is testing a new game where what happens in the game , happens in real life. Many are comparing this to Gamer with Gerard Butler, I feel however this is a far better film. Convincing actors able to pull of a film that is not original but with the effort of the entire group this makes for a good thrill ride and the fight scenes are really well choreographed near the end of the film.

Also the images of the game play are good as well(above)our "hero" in the film Orson Creed is being controlled by a chip planted at the base of his neck

The story deepens as the men responsible for making Orson play out their wishes in the game, have a pawn if you will -they have his wife and if he does not do their bidding they will kill his wife. Yes I know seen this so many times but this is a good action film , I really enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I may.

Action films are only as good as their villains are said a wise man(Gene Siskel) and he was right. I have seen so many action films where the rest of the film was fine but missing that really good villain -- there is one here in Kinkaid

A decent story and good character development are key here and even though the payoff is what I expected I was still thrilled to see how it all turned out.

This takes the cake
casablancavic6 August 2016
Wow, this is bad...really really really bad.

The concept was good, but the delivery was pathetic.

It's very hard to make a conversion between a video game and reality and joining the two to be interactive as it would be in the real world is just asinine.

The story was lost 5 minutes after the story began and it could never be reclaimed to make any coherent sense after that.

Getting an advance screening did nothing to make this any better.

There are few films which are as bad as this right off the start, but this one is among the top of the heap.

At least some of the other movies have an idea of how bad the script was and don't try to capitalize on it too much - and don't expect to gain a mass audience.

This tries to entice the view with an interesting concept and what could have been a great story but was sooooo poorly structured that it fell apart well before production ended.

Another 30 rewrites and then some much needed pre-production ideas and discussions were needed before the first minute of filming began.

Seriously flawed and horribly casted from the "bad guys" and in general.

I saved the rental and theatre cost and am all the better for doing so.

There are much better movies out there which still suck...go watch one of those and leave this one for the production company to rethink on how stupid and what a failure this film was and how much more thought is needed to make something remotely interesting and worthwhile watching, if not great.

Everybody makes mistakes in life...and this is one of the mistakes that people make - either by watching or being part of the movie in any form.

This is the first review I've done and I'm doing it because of the utter garbage I've just watched. There should be a "bin it board" where all movies have to be watched by the "B.I.B" and if they don't make the grade,BIN IT!!The actors were like puppets, only you couldn't see the strings, the 60s Thunderbirds come to mind!Action scenes, well,I've seen 10 year old kids playing toy fighting outside what would put this rubbish to shame. Now a lot of people say they wouldn't give any stars if they could, but I'm giving it one and for one reason only, the girl(the voice) on the phone was surely an Oscar winning performance compared to the other so called actors. This movie has beat my all time worse movie by a mile, robin hood with smiley Russel Crowe!!!!!!
