Harry and Jack Williams use two timelines to set up the first episode of The Missing.
It also raises further questions as we see events in 2006 and eight years later in 2014.
James Nesbitt plays Jack an every man whose life takes a drastic turn for the worse when his young son Ollie gets lost in a crowded bar in France where they are holidaying.
Detective Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo) is a veteran detective called in to investigate and help out the distraught parents, Jack and Emily (Francis O'Connor.)
In the present time line of 2014. Jack is a haunted man still in France, his marriage with Emily has collapsed. He sees Baptiste as Jack has found new evidence that he wants investigating. Jack is obsessed with finding his son, he cannot let go. Baptiste meanwhile now has a pronounced limp.
The series was controversial when broadcast because of the perceived similarities with the real life Madeline McCann case. It then took its own identity in subsequent episodes no doubt helped by a mesmerising performance from Karyo.
