Norway’s submission to the Oscars to open 56th edition; Jihlava docfest winners revealed.
Bent Hamer’s latest feature film 1001 Grams will be the opening film tonight for Lübeck’s Nordic Film Days (Oct 29 – Nov 2), which has a programme of 172 films screening from the North and North-East of Europe.
Norway’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar was co-produced by Cologne-based Pandora Film Produktion and will be released theatrically in Germany by Pandora’s distribution arm, Pandora Film Verleih, on December 18.
Ahead of 1001 Grams’ German premiere in Lübeck, co-producer Claudia Steffen and her partners at Pandora issued a statement expressing their concern „that one of our most important allies, the Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw, has faced significant cut-backs from its two main shareholders.“
Earlier this month, public broadcaster Wdr had revealed its intention to reduce its voluntary annual contribution to Germany’s leading regional film fund by $ 3.82m (€ 3m), and the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia...

Ballet Boys is quite the antithesis of everything we’ve come to expect from a ballet documentary. No one is collapsing under the pressure of competition, mired in self doubt or tormented by the last vestiges of body fat. There is very little real dancing shown and two out of three of its stars are far from convinced they want to be dancers at all. What Kenneth Elvebakk’s affectionate snapshot offers instead is the clumsy tangle of kinetic energy, mockery and generosity unique to teenage friendship, as three boys dedicate their precious after school hours to their love of dance and the tentative promise of a future career.
In poignant contrast with the experience of ballet girls, Syvert, Torgeir and Lucas carry with them the knowledge that boys are special in this rarefied world. They choose it, with little doubt that it will choose them too. They train with...

Other titles on Toronto slate include Billy Pols’ bio-doc Zombie [pictured] about cult skateboarder Tim Zom and Johan Grimonprez’s upcoming arms trade exposé Shadow Land.
Paris-based documentary specialist Wide House has acquired a trio of new titles ahead of Toronto including Claire Simon’s Place Aux Jeunes, a portrait of France’s world famous La Fémis film school.
It is the latest documentary from French director Simon, whose Gare du Nord - going behind-the-scenes of Paris’s biggest train station - recently competed at Locarno.
Other new acquisitions include Zombie: The Resurrection of Tim Zom by Dutch filmmaker Billy Pols, about a Rotterdam-born skateboarding star with a dark childhood. The documentary, featuring footage of Zom in action, premiered at Rotterdam earlier this year.
Wide, which has a growing arts and culture line, has also acquired Juan Alvarez Neme’s Avant about celebrated Argentine dancer Julio Bocca and his work rebuilding Uruguay’s National Ballet Company.

Kenneth Elvebakk’s visually polished documentary, Ballet Boys, chronicles the experiences of three teenage boys in Norway who have a passion for ballet. The fly-on-the-wall approach takes audiences behind the curtain of what it takes to succeed as a male ballet dancer, but unfortunately bypasses intriguing avenues of enquiry in favour of merely skimming the surface of what would be a rare, inside look at a relatively unseen aspect of the performing arts.
Ballet Boys follows Torgeir, Syvert and Lukas, three high school friends in Norway who also share an extra-curricular passion for ballet. As they approach graduation, they all must consider if ballet is something they want to pursue in the future and if so, how they will manage to balance dancing with their further education. Despite some initial reservations, all three decide that ballet is too much a part of their lives to give up completely, but only...
