Strange but Holds the Attention
claudio_carvalho21 October 2018
"Painless" is a strange drama about a lonely young scientist with a rare disease that makes him feel no physical pain. He researches the cure and is supported by his physician that treats him since he was a child. He is afraid of hurting himself since he is painless. The only twist in the storyline is when he feels attracted by a young woman he meets in the subway and when an ambitious unethical scientist proposes to help him. Although developed in slow pace and with few things happening, "Painless" has details and in the end holds the attention of the viewer. My vote is six.

Obsessive Drama
Foutainoflife5 March 2019
This is about a guy who can not feel physical pain. He is trying to find a way to remedy his condition.

This was a bit of a drag for me. I was expecting it to be much more thriller than drama but once it fell into the drama rut, it just never found a way out. I guess if you are looking for a slow, dark drama it could meet you needs. If you are wanting a thriller you are better advised to look elsewhere.

Many movies are just like this.

I watch a lot of films and unfortunately, ones like this get made that do not hold my interest in their lack of story and acting skills. This has a very interesting subject matter but fails to execute it without the proper people behind it and the money needed to do that. It could be done in a different way that brings much more entertainment and box office success. The puzzle is, how do so many of these low budget films get made in the first place.

It feels like a science programme. But the acting is superb.

Every once in a while, nature makes a mistake.

The beginning explains a lot. First, footage of an adorable-looking 2-year-old, growing up and having one injury after the other. And again and again, you get this emotionless stare because he turns out to be numb to pain. In addition, there's an increasingly desperate-looking mother. And finally, that picture of a little boy in plaster staring sadly ahead while in the background children enjoy themselves in a playground. Perhaps this little boy realizes at that moment that his life will be very different from that of an average person. And that's how you'll see the grown-up Henry (Joey Klein) afterward. A person who lives completely isolated and who moves carefully through society every day. Taking with him a backpack stuffed with attributes to take care of injuries. The only thing he's trying to produce in his as a lab equipped apartment is a medicinal product. Not to treat pain. But something so he finally can feel pain. A vital signal that the human body passes on to indicate that something isn't right physically. A medicine so Henry has the feeling he's really alive.

"Painless" is not SF, even though I don't know whether there are people in the world who suffer from the same condition as Henry or not. I'd rather call this film a drama with a scientific undertone. Because believe me, a lot of Chinese sounding medical terms will be fired at you. Technical terms about chemical compounds and genetic stuff are used throughout the whole movie. No idea what education Henry has followed. But it's clear he's a genius in the field of science. He also appears to have an unprecedented gift that allows him to diagnose a person's condition with a single glance. This all makes this film rather boring sometimes and too intellectual. It feels as if you are looking at some scientific program. Something only real nerds like to watch. And they get excited about every scientific term that's being used. Yet there's something else to be enjoyed for ordinary people without a master degree. Someone like me for instance. And that's the wonderful acting.

Joey Klein delivers a great performance. The way he shapes Henry is simply brilliant. The unworldly loner who looks shyly around and who avoids any contact with other individuals. The only one he has regular contact with is his doctor Dr. Raymond Parks (Kip Gilman). Probably someone who took care of Henry countless times after yet another incident. He's also Henry's confidant. So regularly Henry storms into his office without asking, just to argue about a new theory. In my opinion, it's also the only one who fully understands Henry. And then one day Henry meets the graceful Shani (Evalena Marie). A painful encounter (there's hot coffee involved) after which he comes to the realization that there's more to life than his eternal search for a cure. It's painful to see how clumsy he is when interacting with others who don't have a medical background.

"Painless" is about the absence of physical pain. It's also about the numbing effect this had on the emotional part of Henry. He's just as insensitive when it's about emotions. The way he responds to certain situations shows a social ignorance and a lack of experience in the field of human interaction. For him, everything is a distraction that prevents him from finding a solution for his ailment. "Painless" is certainly not an action-packed and adventurous blockbuster but still an interesting film. It shows how persons with a disorder still can function in our society. And even though you usually don't understand what they're talking about (thanks to the frequent use of medical and scientific terms), you can understand Henry at the end. "Painless" is about perseverance and determination. But at the same time, it is also about loneliness and sorrow. In short, a scientific drama with a romantic touch that surprised me.

Surprised

Was fliipping thru what to watch and this caught my eye. I enjoyed it very much. There were times Henry got on my nerves. I wanted to scream just live! I wanted him to have romance. I cried at different part of the film. I've never seen any of these actors and was amazed how great they were. I especially liked the Good Dr. Forgot his name. The end really made me cry. I saw a person write this was scifi? I don't think so? Any ways I must of really liked t because watched it last night and just woke up and here I am reviewing.

Painless was ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS! Amazing Film!
tom-4112724 September 2018
The story was incredible. Such a rare, unique, almost unheard of topic. Kudos to Jordan Horowitz as a writer, director, and producer for broaching and bringing to life such an idea.

The script was amazing. It did not skip a beat at all. The story flow was rich, authentic, and perfectly timed at every stage of its unfolding.

The casting was impeccable. The actor's performances were wonderful and the interplay between each was great. It's particularly notable as I assume the actors have no experience with this subject matter and they emotionally connected to the story and each other in the most honest of ways.

The production was stunning. Absolutely beautiful! I was shocked to hear that this movie was produced - studio/cinematic quality - on such a conservative budget and tight schedule. This includes the creative DP decisions made , the graphics, and music.

It should be named Paineful

It's very painful to watch this movie. The dialogs filled with medical terms are boring and meaningless. The actors are wooden, the scenes are dull. What is this movie about? Much ado about nothing?

Captivating... but where is the Sci-Fi?
barrelhousegutboy4 October 2018
The production value is above reproach and all the players turn in solid performances. Not really sure where the Science Fiction comes in unless they mean its a fictional story about science. The story is much like Lorenzo's Oil but from the 1st person as an adult. There are several places the film could have played a predictable (and expected) card but it stays true to a harder vision and doesn't sell the character to the story (what I mean is in many films you will have a character act out of character to create the 'issue' that carries the story forward, they don't do that here). As a result I found myself much more invested in the lead character than I usually get. I could have watched another hour without a hiccup. A very solid piece of work.

"Painless" Is an Impeccable Film with A Lot of Feeling
cheektogeek12 December 2017
I had the pleasure of seeing this film when it screened at a sci-fi film festival in Austin, TX, called Other Worlds Austin. It was one of my favorites from the entire festival. I was so impressed with this film, because it elevates science fiction from what people normally expect. "Painless" is an impeccably written, character driven story about Henry, a man with a congenital disorder that doesn't allow him to feel pain, and his quest to "cure" himself. Rather than taking the path of most science fiction and action films and creating a superhuman character who is invulnerable to pain, this movie was extremely thoughtful in considering how a person with this disorder might become extremely cautious and closed off. It's Henry's struggle with his solitude that make this story so captivating. Joey Klein gives an incredible performance as Henry, and the supporting cast excels as well. The cinematography in this film adds so much to the story. Jordan Horowitz did an amazing job writing and directing this film. I'm so excited to see science fiction moving in the direction of emotional storytelling and not just clever plot lines and CGI creatures. I hope I get to see this film again, and I'm very excited to see what everyone involved with this movie does next.

I was thoroughly impressed by this film. Such a creative & unique idea/concept. It is well made. The story is a pleasant surprise that keeps you engaged and invested the whole way through. The cinematography was beautiful. And the acting was amazing. I loved it. I also got to attend the opening night of the screening where i got to hear all the Q & A's. And i was blown away that they actually hired a scientist for this movie... so all the science that you witness is 100% accurate and real. I thought was was super cool. 10/10 for me. Bravo!

sticks with you

It maybe gets misunderstood by a lot of people. If you understand you will enjoy this.

From the opening it is clear that this is a picture that will stick with you. With all of us. It will shock and disturb you maybe.

It is about a very real condition and that is part of what makes it so profound.

Have not seen lead actor in anything else but he play the part very convincingly.

smart and original
inon10113 May 2021
I stumbled across the trailer of this movie and was curious to check it out. What a treat. This is a smart, human, original piece of indie cinema that works really well as a drama as well as a thriller. The main character who cannot feel pain is riddled with so much mental anguish that his face exudes it in a way that evokes so much empathy. The movie defies genre expectations and manages to deliver a very compelling human character-drama along with what feels like a carefully researched sci-fi-thriller (in the true sense of "science" rather than fantasy). One is reminded of Aronofsky's Pi in the best of ways - but this film has so much more to offer. I highly recommend it.
