A short exploration of Lovecraftian themes, made in Sweden on a very tight budget. Clocking in at under three minutes, THE DEEP ONES doesn't have time to do much other than provide some basic storyline and an unsettling atmosphere, but it achieves both those things admirably.
The film's protagonist is a solitary figure who seems to be dreading some forthcoming event. At first he seems like your usual Emo-type character, but as the film reaches its climax, his true purpose is revealed and it's one which ties nicely into the Cthulhu Mythos. It's very much a reflective mood piece, with nice outdoor photography, although the entire lack of supernatural aspects makes it inevitably a bit disappointing.
A more extensive sequel, THE DEEP END, followed in 2014. For those wanting to find out more about the Deep Ones, Lovecraft's two stories, DAGON and THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH, are the place to look.
