Although I thought this was a very entertaining episode, I thought the allegation that Indiana Jones was irrelevant to the outcome of the story to be incorrect. Amy stated that with or without Indiana Jones, the Nazis still would have found the ark, brought it to the island, opened it, and died. While the guys were analyzing these allegations in the school cafeteria, Howard countered that the Nazis never would have even found the ark because they were digging in the wrong place and the only reason they got the ark was because Indy found it first. Leonard begrudgingly stated that the Nazis were only digging in the wrong place because Indy had the medallion and without Indy they would have had the medallion and dug in the right place.
However, according to the story it doesn't appear that the Nazis would have even known where to find the medallion without Indy, since they were looking for Abner Ravenwood but didn't know where in the world to find him. Indy knew that his former mentor Abner had collected certain artifacts so he went looking for Abner in Nepal and found Abner's daughter Marion who was Indy's former girlfriend. The Nazis showed up right after Indy also looking for the medallion, and surely would have obtained it, by torturing Marion if necessary, if Indy wasn't there to fight them.
But without Indy, the Nazis would have not even known to go to Nepal to look for the medallion, because they didn't know about Marion, where she was living, or that she even had the medallion, since they were looking only for Abner. When Indy embarked on his journey, it clearly showed a Nazi spy following him on the plane ride, while peering over a Life magazine. The Nazis knew they couldn't find the medallion on their own which is why they started following Indy when they found out through their spies that he started searching for Abner also. The Nazi spy on the plane ride was almost certainly alerting his cohorts along the way about where Indy was going, which is how they all ended up at a remote mountain bar in Nepal.
