An art doc that is art
alanl-3550321 April 2024
A refreshingly stylized documentary on an incredible artist. Minsker injects his visual style and a "wall of sound" that drives the storytelling in a compelling and entertaining way. Many documentaries can rely too much on talking heads, but Minsker uses them in a balanced way along with interviews with LaForge and captures the artist as he rises in prominence in the New York art world.

It doesn't linger long on LaForge's early days growing up or time in San Francisco, but gives you enough to understand where he came from.

I was fortunate to see the documentary in an old opera house at the 7th annual Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival in Pennsylvania.

Excellent Documentary
mrcthedj29 May 2024
From his early years as an odd man out to his drug fueled years in the swinging seventies and eighties, all the way up to the pivotal marches, Covid-19 and social upheaval of the polarizing 2020s; this doc covers Scooter LaForge's undeniable impact. A contemporary of the likes of Kieth Haring and Gail Thacker. His influence is timelessly infused within the fabric of LGBT culture during the highly romanticized days of old New York. He painted everything: Canvases, Sculptures, and even people! His artwork appears on a remarkably unique clothing line, worn by the socialites and punk rockers alike, including Debbie Harry. This is a great doc. It's the story of an artistic icon you might not realize you need to know.

Fun and Engaging Profile of an Artist
photo-859-4016313 May 2024
Artist Scooter LaForge is a NYC-based artist whose work is a mixture of expressionism, pop, urban street, and modern representational art styles. His densely-layered paintings can be found on traditional canvas but also walls, windows, clothing, and everyday objects. Director Ethan Minsker perfectly captures the playful and instantly impactful nature of LaForge's art in this documentary. Creative visual tricks, cool framing, and backgrounds dissolving into swathes of color keeps the viewer engaged and wondering what is going to happen next in the frame.

The look of the film is as colorful as LaForge's work and the uncluttered, fast pacing never slows the story. The soundtrack reinforces this forward push to the narrative and provide a fitting emotional undertow to the scenes. The film portrays LaForge as a compulsive creative and Minsker's direction is worthy of its subject.

While both the art and the filmmaking are inspiring, this doc also asks deeper questions about the purpose of art and what determines the value of art and the legacy of an artist. The tone is never didactic though and the viewer is left to answer these questions themselves while watching an artist remake the world around him with his creative vision.

Incredible documentary about the power of art!
lbarker0818 May 2024
Scooter Laforge's life and work as an artist is explored in-depth in this incredible documentary directed by Ethan H. Minsker. The stylized introduction pulled me into the story, and the visuals throughout the film kept me engaged. The story weaves through the tapestry of San Francisco and New York, demonstrating how Scooter has incorporated his own experiences and current events into his powerful artwork. It also explores Scooter's life and his struggles with coming out of the closet, dealing with homophobia, and substance abuse. It's intriguing to see all of the events and experiences that have shaped his life and art over his entire career. The film is really visually appealing and the story moves effortlessly as we meet different people that know Scooter and his work. Watching this made me want to learn even more about Scooter Laforge and his work! I highly recommend it.

A Truly Ejoyable Doc
baccaruda111 May 2024
I genuinely enjoyed this film. Ethan Minsker has created a documentary for the ages. Artist Scooter LaForge is the fascinating subject of the film, a man who essentially created an entirely new style of artistic expression. The documentary is populated with the esoteric, exotic, fiercely creative denizens of the modern New York City art scene, adding an air of inclusion to the narrative. Mr. Minsker wore every production hat in this film - writer, director, cinematographer, and most importantly, editor. Carefully selected special effects add to more to an already compelling narrative, and perfectly complement the visual feast that LaForge embodies in every facet of his life. Editing a film is tough, but Mr. Minsker's skill made the entire film move cleanly and organically. Most docs I see these days have to do with the true crime genre, but this one is a welcome change that I very much appreciated. There is so much to recommend about this film, and it's one of the better docs I've seen. Spend your evening with Ethan and Scooter. Totally worth your time!

Inventive and Interesting Doc
Wigflipa10 May 2024
I saw this documentary at a film festival and also had the pleasure to discuss with the filmmaker. I had only heard of Scooter LaForge in passing prior. The explanations of Scooter's career and his work were very thorough and the visually inventive nature of the storytelling kept everything energized and interesting as you weave through the nuance of Scooter's life. While there was a comprehensive element to the story of Scooter's life, there were also very present "slice of life" elements as he deals with more contemporary issues within his career, especially as he grapples with pressing social issues about this country and things happening in NYC. Between the great tone setting music, the fun animation, and the interesting individuals providing color commentary to a provocative art career, this was a fun watch. And I look forward to more work from this director.

fantastic art documentary
hildaarani8 May 2024
Scooter LaForge was all about art from day one. He's into all kinds of art - graffiti, expressionism, neo-surrealism - you name it, he's dabbled. His stuff? It's all about pop culture and what's happening now. The director, Minsker, jazzes things up with animation, giving us a peek into Scooter's artsy journey from way back. It's not just a boring talkfest; it's like art in motion. Scooter's story is fascinating, and his art? Mind-blowing. But what really makes this documentary stand out is how Scooter's crew has shaped him, and how he's shaped them right back. Art's always evolving, right? Scooter gets that, and Minsker's doc totally celebrates his vibe and his killer work.

An in-depth portrait of a vibrant artist
A fun and engaging film. The animation and effects give a whimsical and personal touch to a complicated subject. It puts Scooter's work in a historical context and is overall a very detailed look into his background and career. There's also some wonderful meditations on the nature of art making itself, the section where Scooter talks about what it takes to get your work archived particularly resonated with me. There are no guarantees as to what will be remembered and what Scooter's long-term legacy will be, but this film certainly establishes him as a groundbreaking artist who uplifts the community.

Brilliant, Captivating, Creative Doc about an Incredible Artist
sugarparksmusic5 May 2024
This truly was such an intriguing, artistic, heart-felt, creative documentary that captivated my interest the entire time. This documentary was so well put together, with a wonderful balance of showing and telling and some cool, artsy special effects, stop motion/animation added such a satisfying pop. I loved learning about Scooter LaForge as an artist and person. Along with his art being fascinating in all its many forms, it was also fascinating to learn about his journey, struggles, process, philosophies, artistic achievements, and contributions to society. This documentary was also very inspiring. I haven't created art in a while and it motivated me to pick it back up. What an awesome human Scooter LaForge is, I'm so glad I got to know him through this.

A Colorful Documentary about a brilliant Artist.
ath06297 May 2024
This colorful documentary follows the career of Scooter LaForge during a few tumultuous times in the United States.

As a queer teenager he struggled in a small town because he was not afraid to express his individuality. However, his struggles led him to San Francisco at the end of the AIDS crisis. After a few years, Scooter made his way to New York City, where most of the documentary takes place.

Scooter takes inspiration from his own past as well as the history of the world and the struggles of the present such as the COVID and the death of George Floyd.

I was most interested in his many collaborations and how they influenced and changed the way he expresses himself. As he began to collaborate with Patricia Field ( costume designer for Sex in the City) , fashion became one canvas he used to display his art. From paint to fabric he is able to express his unique vision of the world. He was even able to help the unhoused by raising money through the sale of his art on t-shirts.

Scooter LaForge is open and honest about his life, struggles and triumphs. The colorful cast of his friends, and collaborators makes this a very entertaining look at a man and his unique art.

Ultra-Relevant Artist Doc
JeromeV796314 May 2024
This is a stunning, immersive documentary on the life and times of visionary artist Scooter LaForge. From his humble beginnings in Las Cruces, NM, to San Francisco during the early 90's, to his present home in NYC, his journey will blow your mind. Using integrated animations, edgy original songs, and ultra-kinetic camerawork/editing, the filmmakers take viewers into the mind of this talented mixed media artist. Scooter's insights into art and the world around us are intelligent and provocative, highlighted by his extraordinary work. I was reminded of Andy Warhol and the 1960's. I can't say enough about the talent on display here, both in front of and behind the camera. You do want not miss this movie!

Creative and Necessary
jackmooney96 May 2024
Ethan Minsker's timely film is filled with raw interviews, a relatable subject, as well as many sequences filled with memorable stop motion and animated movement. It was refreshing, reminding me of the vast opportunities documentary filmmakers can work with. Scooter's story is something everyone needs to hear, and Minsker does a nice job incorporating Scooter's story with the story of New York. You'll be brought into the artist mindset.

The New York art scene is fascinating, and with the rawness I mentioned earlier, the film has great world building in bringing you into the city. The creativity, the unique sense of fashion...it's immersive documentary filmmaking at its finest. The film also has a guerilla aspect too, which makes the perspective feel more grounded. I loved it, highly recommend.

Scooter LaForge Wuz Here!
beemtoaustin4 May 2024
There are times during the film when I would like to see Scooter LaForge jump up and down with just some of the excitement I am feeling watching him calmly share all this relentless, playful brilliance, but that's me, not him, and if there's one thing clear throughout Ethan Minsker's lovingly detailed portrait, it is LaForge's almost level-headed sense of self, baffling contrast to the wildly surreal eclecticism on display. The paintings can collectively at first glance feel excessively and always flamboyantly busy until you narrow on that one certain thing, or many things, inside the frame that speaks to you especially, at which point you find yourself irrevocably involved, usually with a smile. And as specific to brushstroke art as LaForge's work is, there are underlying lessons, maybe even warnings here for all artists-to-be, regardless of form or discipline, because for all the talk of art this is as much a story of survival. Survival gained through hard work, self-discipline, self-reflection, and even reinvention.

Drawing upon his apparent endless arsenal of visual brilliance, be it festive graphics, stop motion, or perfectly paced edits, Ethan Minsker breathes adoring life into his familiar subject, wholly in tune with Scooter LaForge's world, so much so that if you didn't know better you might just assume LaForge made it himself and that's great filmmaking. Highly recommended.

A lot of fun and a great doc about the art scene
bddqxczmk13 May 2024
The life of Scooter LaForge is an interesting one, I have to admit to having only a casual view of art and the deeper meanings behind it. However this documentary explained to me the art in a way that was both easy to follow and informative.

Knowing a lot of people who experimented with drugs and other unsavory behaviour (not me I am too innocent) it was interesting to see how he found his own form of inner peace. A lot of people are addicts one way or another and his art is well worth his need to create.

As a lover of fashion it was intersting to see how he combined art with clothing. I am not sure if I could afford one of his pieces but the designs are very cool. Respect as well for him mentioning that his style is openly gay especially with the growing homophobia around.

Mesmerizing journey
adorjanmarcel3 May 2024
Initially unfamiliar with the subculture depicted in the film, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself connecting with Scooter's art on a profound level. Coming from a background of more traditional paintings that resonate with my own experiences, I was intrigued by how Scooter's art spoke to individuals whose perspectives I hadn't previously engaged with. It offered me a glimpse into a realm where life is perceived through a different lens, expanding my understanding of creativity.

The documentary aslo raised intriguing questions about resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of art in the face of adversity.

Ethan's presence in the documentary added an intriguing layer to the narrative, blurring the lines between filmmaker and subject. Witnessing the dynamic interplay between artist and filmmaker, and the collaborative process that unfolded between them, underscored the profound connection between life and art. It was a poignant reminder of the beauty that emerges when individuals come together to create something greater than themselves.

Furthermore, the cinematography in the documentary was truly captivating, seamlessly blending the 'real' with the artistic, and transporting viewers into a world teeming with creativity and expression. The camera work allowed me to become a silent observer, navigating through Scooter's world with a sense of awe and wonder.

In conclusion, "Scooter LaForge: A Life of Art" is a mesmerizing journey that transcends boundaries, inviting viewers to explore the transformative power of art and the beauty of human connection. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity of art to inspire, uplift, and transform lives.

A gem of a film!
craigahrens20 May 2024
I had no idea what to expect when selecting this wonderful gem of a film. The trailer captured my interest so I thought, why not. Boy am I glad I took a flyer on this film. This an area of art world I know very little about. That's what really captured my interest. I found myself wanting to learn about this and I wanted to learn about Scooter and his art. I quickly realized this was a whole thing. I mean a culture of its own. A culture very foreign yet intriguing to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the humanity of this film. The reflecting on Scooters career and how so many can relate to similar career struggles. I appreciated how writer/director Ethan H. Minsker presented this documentary. Meaning, it didn't drag. I didn't find my mind wondering off. It moved along at a very nice pace. I believe myself to be a hard critic and there were no flat spots in this terrific documentary for me. I soundly give this gem of a film two thumbs up!!

The essence of no guts, no glory
mbea-102338 May 2024
If ever there was a better combo of artist and documentarian, I sure can't name it. Minsker's unique style of filmmaking complements LaForge's artistic soul, and the film enhances what is already an epic life's work. There's a deeply vulnerable undertone, ever present. These two find a synergy and communion in the way they attack art and the art world. While the documentary is foremost a portrait of LaForge, his past and present as an artist in NYC, the film itself is a piece of Minsker's art, and these two realities don't battle each other. They work hand in hand to reflect the vitality that is the NYC art scene, as it lives and breathes today.

Brilliantly Executed
wayneyoungx2 May 2024
This one of the most brilliantly executed documentary about an artist work life and philosophy @scooter_laforge_a_life_of_art @scooterlaforge Scooter LaForge I'm not saying that because he is my mate but because its rawness and authenticities shine through.

The director and producer @ethanminsker Ethan Minsker is just as phenomenal in his direction lighting and his abilities to conceptualize an artist inner voice while putting his artistic style into it without taking away from the subject. BRILLIANT.

I SAW IT ON THE BIG SCREEN Now you can see at your leisure. Must experience and own it forever.

BRAVOS.

A Surreal Artistic Documentary That's Beautifully Told
michael-perez825 May 2024
The vibrant colors, surreal visual effects, and energetic soundtrack did a wonderful job of complimenting the story of Scooter LaForge. Director Ethan Minsker kept me thoroughly engaged with the visually appealing storytelling. The documentary has a well-edited structure that keeps you occupied with continually moving visuals wrapped around the personal story of a unique artist. You can tell that Scooter and Ethan both have a love for art and their styles work collaboratively in this film. Art has so many mediums to express yourself and the film uses multiple art forms gracefully to guide you through the story.

While I knew nothing about Scooter LaForge coming into the film, I was truly drawn to the art style of the trailer and happy to check it out. I'm glad I did. Scooter has an amazingly distinctive art style, but it was the sharing of his struggles and journey that really helped me understand and become a fan of his art.

The film takes some great risks, as great art truly should, and I think they truly paid off for Director Ethan Minsker's vision. If you are a fan of art or would like to see a uniquely artistic documentary, I think you should absolutely give this film your time.

A Key to a New World
teedymort2 May 2024
When I started watching "Scooter Laforge" I realized that this was a culture I knew very little about. But as I let go of my preconceived ideas about this world that was completely foreign to me, I started to engage with Ethan's vision for Scooter. It was very compelling. For me, coming out of a my upbeat, more traditional paintings that speak to my soul, I realized that Scooter's art speaks to the souls of people I haven't engaged with in the past. I got a glimpse into a world where life is perceived in a very different way than the way I see it.

The early days of Scooter's upbringing were very similar to my own. His mom being an artist, his father's more traditional job and how Scooter navigated that dynamic. But somehow there was a turn for him that I didn't experience in my own life. I found that thought-provoking. What causes our fellow humans to venture down a particular path? Where does this journey really come from?

My own daughter was savagely bullied in grammar school and her experience was much like Scooters'. She too took that anguish and used it to create music. And, interestingly enough, she too was an excellent student in school, especially science, like Scooter. It made me wonder if there's some sort of a through line with bullying and success? Or what type of personality can take desperation and parley that into art? Into success? Not just give up. Like Scooter's younger days living in his little room away from his parents house. How he would turn the gas on in an effort to commit suicide, but then be happy in the morning to still be alive, to have a chance at life. What compelled him to push forward?

When Ethan entered this documentary I was fascinated. To have the film maker now the talent was like breaking the fourth wall on stage. In this case, Life became Art...compelling. He shared his style of art with which I resonated. Then to watch him let go of his creation and allow Scooter to take it in another direction, creating something each individual alone would not have produced. To me, that was a glimpse of what God intended when He created us. Helping each other, loving each other, giving of ourselves to uplift one another.

I would be remiss to not mention how much I loved the cinema photography. The mix between the 'real' and the art that enhanced the camera moves took me on another journey altogether. I felt as though I was in a bubble moving through the city, the art studio, etc. But completely hidden from anyone's view....just an observer. I liked that. This is a world I am not a part of. But, the camera work allowed me to be the fly on the wall and learn about other ways to live, to experience life. That was fascinating.

Wonderful documentary
timdoggiedreams-12 May 2024
This is a compelling portrait of a very intriguing artist. Scooter LaForge has influences that range from Andre Breton and Jackson Pollack, to cartoon animation. The resulting mix of the sublime and fun makes for distinctive and quite wonderful work. Scooter is an LGBTQ artist whose work is probably not for the prudish, but is for the open-minded and adventurous. I know after watching this I consider myself a Scooter LaForge fan. The documentary mirrors its subject in being both interesting and alive. Cool touches like animation and stop motion bring the work to life in ways that are fun and reflect a little of Scooter's sensibility. Docs are usually good either because the subject or filmmaking are good. In this movie, both the subject and the filmmaking are fascinating. This is one doc I can thoroughly recommend!

Scooter LaForge Art is off the charts!
fredunderland7 May 2024
Yo, lemme tell you 'bout this flick, Scooter LaForge: A Life of Art. From the jump, you get hit with his realness as he lays bare his journey, from the ups to the downs, all set against the backdrop of NYC's gritty yet artsy streets. His style? Man, it's off the charts! Think childhood dreams mixed with grown-up truths, all painted on whatever he can get his hands on. Ain't no limits to his creativity, mixin' paint, objects, fabric-anything that catches his eye. And check this, his gear ain't just for anyone. Nah, it's luxury, customized for the elite. Patricia Field herself took notice, linkin' up with Scooter to bless the world with his creations. We talkin' bout celebs like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and the beautiful Debbie Harry rocken his threads like it's nothin'. But it ain't just about the fame and the glam. Nah, Scooter's art goes deep, layerin' classical vibes with today's issues. It's like he's speakin' truths through his paintings, holdin' up a mirror to society.
