I wish it was better

I wanted to like the new Night Court. I was a big fan of the original, which was great at times (though inconsistent), and Dan Fielding was one of the great sitcom characters.

The new version has had 11 episodes, and it's just not finding any rhythm. The acting and writing (Larroquette aside), are both poor. I know what they were going for with the "Gergs" character, but the actress and dialogue are not up to the task. Obviously the show would not have been made without Rauch's involvement, but she's not very good either. Making her character Harry's daughter also adds a maudlin, manipulative air to the frequent mentions of Judge Stone---they mention him to tell the viewer "You're supposed to feel sad here". But that gets old fast.

This episode is one of the few that actually feels like the court and set are filled and not half-empty and lifeless. But the wedding expo stuff made no sense in a way that the old Night Court might have embraced, but the new version is so dull that you have time to ask yourself, "Why are a priest and rabbi here if there was an arrest at a wedding expo?" "Why does the wedding planner have cake at the courtroom?" "Why do we care if Abby gets married in the first place?" "Why does the bailiff speak more in the courtroom than the judge?" But if only more of it was funny, none of that would matter.

So many wasted opportunities to be a really fun and funny episode. Its about weddings and marriage. Any script writer of any talent shoudl be able to make this fun and funny to watch.

But then, they did not hire for this show based on talent (look at the supporting cast) , the writers again show they have no clue to what the show is about or how to write comedy. That not-funny laugh track is annoying as ever.

The actress Lacretta is a waste of time, she needs to be replaced (as does most of the supporting cast) in this episode, her stupidity is beyond tolerable. If she thinks she thinks she is the modern version of Bull, think again. I can see why Richard Moll (Bull) did not want to be associated with this cast of misfits. He isn't that desperate for a paycheck.

By episode 11, you should have a cast that gets along and can play off each other. Other than when John Larroquette interacts with Melissa Rauch, there is zero chemistry between the cast..

Not good...

Knot Ready

This time, I'm reviewing episode 11 of Season 1 of the Night Court Revival. This episode is entitled Ready or Knot.

Starting with episode 6, this Revival had been showing a slow but steady progression upwards in terms of the improving of this series' quality. That has changed with this episode, for this is the weakest entry since Episode 5 , but thankfully this episode is still much better than Episode 5.

This show just isn't learning to cut out that Abby personal drama crap. It didn't work in the other episodes that made use of it and it doesn't work here.

The main things that work here are the performance of John Laroquette, the wonderful performance of Kapil Talwalkar playing Court Clerk Neil, the maintaining of the sets, and the implementation of the good ol' laugh track Other minor things that worked were a few of the jokes and the implementation of a decent number of court cases. However, I must admit these trials were not exploited for nowhere near their complete comedic potential.

Aside from Abby's personal drama, other things that did not work in this episode were the low quality writing, the poor laugh quotient, and the bad acting of both India de Beaufort and Lacretta. Also, quit with all of these references to Harry Stone. Those started getting old with the Pilot Episode. WE GET IT. You are cashing in on an old property. Quit bringing them up in nearly every episode.

One thing I must admit though is that there was a twist in this episode that I didn't see coming.

Next time, I'll be reviewing the twelfth episode entitled DA Club. Stay tuned!
