So, let me be up front here. I understand anyone who complins about this "movie". If you go into this expecting a Mugen train experience with a full-blown movie, you will be sorely disappointed. This is nothing more than a big screen showing and a sneak peak of the new season. You also get to watch or in my case, rewatch the two final episodes of season 2. If you haven't watched season 2 till the end, watch up until episode 9 and then see this in the cinema! This was such a fun and epic experience, but I will agree, no doubt a cash grab. So do your research, lower your expectations and you´ll have a fun time.
The first half is the two final episodes of season 2 with a climactic fight and an emotional ending. The last half is the first episode of season 3, showing Tanjiro recovering after the battle in the entertainment district. His sword is destroyed once again, and Tanjiro sets out to the swordsmith village in order to get a new sword. Here he meets old friends and interesting new characters.
This "movie" could easily just have been episode 1 of season 3 and have been sold as a short film for less money. The tagging along of episode 10 and 11 for season 2 seems highly unnecessary and just here so they could charge full prize for a ticket. But it is fun to see these amazing episodes on the big screen and they are definitely heightened in the cinema. Episode 1 of season 3 is also really good and really prepares you for the new adventures and also left me want to watch episode 2 right away with burning questions left hanging.
The score and songs are amazing. They play all openings, even the new one, and they are all so well done. I found the new opening a bit boring compared to the old but I still liked it. The relaxed score when things are just vibeing down, the existing action score, the funny moments are all heightened by the instrumentals here.
The sound was so incredible here. I love the shocking effects after quite moments, the sounds of swords, effects, magic all sound incredible. This is such a strong and memorable sound side to a show that worked so well here.
The animation at display is iconic, memorable and so good. The traditional 2D animation is so beautiful and every character and location looks so distinct and well done. The 3D effects all look so great and I love the look of attacks. When episode 1 of season 3 starts the animation budget is flexed with it´s incredible and highly detailed 3D backgrounds that all look so incredible.
I´m personally really exited for season 3 and episode 1 really leaves a lot of carrots dangling. New villains are introduced, familiar faces need more explanations, a secret weapon in the swordsmith village. So many incredible setups that I hope has fun and existing payoffs.
But as mentioned this is not a movie but just 3 episodes of a TV show set back-to-back. They don't even try to hide it with credits rolling after every episode which means there are 3 credit crawls with 2 of them unescapable and poorly made recaps in the next episodes of things you literally just watched as if you were at home bingeing. This is of course fine for what it is, but it seems without much effort put into it and just a dump in cinemas just because.
The action at display is incredible and the emotional scenes really land here. Episode 1 of season 3 is also good and more of a down on earth and cute episode. It´s an emotional roller-coaster while watching.
I really love this show and it´s world and characters. Tanjiro is an incredible main character I love so much and the lore and of the world seems forever expanding. We even get new villains introduced and I can´t wait to see them in action for real.
It is cool to see these episodes but I must admit half of this was just repetition for me. It was fun to see it scaled up and it´s fun to watch, but I was mainly here for the second half. I would rate this much higher if I hadn't watched the first 2 episodes shown before and that is no doubt the best way to watch this, but I will be fair and say while entertained this isn't a movie and can even fell a bit scummy by simply giving us 3 episodes and calling it a movie. By the way I hope they keep some cinema experience alive like Mugen train. Let´s just say the new season sets up some obvious opportunities for making some OVA´s for other characters and that would be the filler worth showing in the cinema.
