It was the console that marked the end of Sega's part in the console market, but the Dreamcast was an impressive swansong: with its online connectivity, novel controller and impressive library of games, the system retains a loyal fanbase almost two decades on from its launch in 1998.

British publisher Read Only Memory have, over the past few years, released some quite stunning books about the history of videogames, one of them being 2014's Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Collected Works, which contained interviews, a lengthy essay about the classic 16-bit system, plus tonnes of artwork, plan drawings and other rarely-seen illustrations. Clad in thick black boards and beautifully designed,...

In partnership with fine art publisher Washington Green, Sega Europe has announced plans to exhibit a collection of art pieces celebrating Sonic The Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary.
As per the press release (via VideoGamer), the exhibit will see a VIP gallery launch on December 1 at Castle Fine Art’s South Molton Street, London branch before opening to the public a day later on December 2.
Featuring an eclectic range of original works “executed through a number of mediums and creative styles,” Sega says sculptures, paintings and “mixed media,” will be just some of the avenues artists will be exploring to celebrate the Blue Blur’s quarter-century birthday. The press release reads:
The Sonic licensing programme is already well known for its art programmes but we wanted to really push the boundaries with this project. With Washington Green we have been able to create a one-of-a-kind collection for the franchise. They...

From the creator of Sonic The Hedgehog comes Rodea The Sky Soldier. Here's a brand new trailer...
Yuji Naka was still a teenager when he joined Sega in the early 80s, and his early work included programming duties on the likes of Phantasy Star and the Sega Mega Drive conversion of Ghouls N Ghosts.
But in the early 90s, he headed up the game that would make Sega globally famous: the high-octane platformer, Sonic The Hedgehog. Until he left the company in 2006 to found his own company, Prope, Naka continued to produce various Sonic sequels and spin-offs, but also headed up some refreshingly different games, too, including Burning Rangers and the superb Nights Into Dreams.
Naka's latest game is called Rodea The Sky Soldier, which is coming out this autumn for the 3Ds, Wii and Wii U. It's a much more ambitious game than Naka's other games he's created through Prope,...

Despite the lack of solid third-party releases, the Nintendo Wii U has been on a roll over the past few months. The good times look to continue into 2015, too, as Nis America has announced that they will be bringing Rodea the Sky Soldier to North America and Europe later this year.
Set to be released on both the Wii U and Nintendo 3Ds, Rodea centers around the titular machine soldier. 1,000 years prior to the start of this adventure, Rodea made a promise to Princess Cecilia that he would protect the sky kingdom of Garuda from the Naga Empire. After being awakened and repaired by a young inventor named Ion, Rodea learns that Garuda has lived in peace for the past 1,000 years. Shortly after awakening, though, the forces of the Naga Empire return, and Rodea must honor his promise once again.
Featuring colossal battles set in the skies, Rodea the Sky...

This just in; the upcoming "Sonic Lost World" for the Wii U will have a special edition that can only be obtained via pre-ordering. The Deadly Six Bonus Edition as it's called with include a code that can used to download the NiGHTMARE Dlc.
With it, Sonic will go face to face against Nightmaren foes, who all hail from the Sega Saturn classic NiGHTS Into Dreams. Which as all diehard Segaphiles will tell you is a weird, the circle is complete type of deal.
So what's story? In the mid 90s, Sega had managed to hold its own against Nintendo during the 16-bit wars, thanks to "Sonic the Hedgehog." But with the upcoming 32/64 bit era, Sega knew that they had to enter the 3D platforming arena, so a three dimensional Sonic game was commissioned and put into production.
But not by its creator; Sonic Team decided to do something decidedly different,...
