Space Shooting on the Grid
hellraiser730 August 2022
This is another of my favorite video games and retro space shooters of all time, it's also another entry in my "Under the Radar" series. This game wasn't overlooked it really was a hit at the time but it's fame didn't really stick like the other well-known 80s classics like "Pac Man" and "Defender" and as time went on its became forgotten. However, the game has overtime became a sleeper cult gem, as there has be a recent port of this game on one of the retro consoles. I play the cabinet of this game at the annual "Tacoma Pinball Convention" religiously; hopefully in the future this game will become another volume in the "Arcade Archives" series for download.

Really like the graphical presentation as it's the kind you'd expect from any space shooting game from the 80's but that's fine but me as I wouldn't want it any other way. Like the design of the enemy spaceships which are each unique. Most of ships look like the kind you'd see from "Defender" as one of the UFO look a lot like those octopus or jellyfish like ships from that game. Yeah, this game might have taken a slight cue or two from defender, like the laser sound effects. But I don't really mind same can be said about a lot of retro games out there, what matter is that the game sets itself to be what it is fun.

I really like that each of the levels are different it doesn't feel like the same old game every time which is something most space shooters at the time did. In each of the levels there is also a new fleet with different kind of enemy ships, each with a different kind attack, maneuver, and formation pattern. This gives the game a slight unpredictability as it causes you to constantly adapt and adjust to prepare for what's next. And like in all space shooters you can't advance unless you destroy all the ships so stay loose, hang tight, and make every shot count.

One of the things that make the game stand out is in it's freedom of movement as past space shooters you were limited to just going left and right. Here you still get to go left and right but also forward and backward, this is great because it means you can control the speed and direction of your ship. I really like how the game created that illusion of speed as you push the joystick forward or backward you see the background grid move with the direction you push it. It's just really cool really like seeing that color in the background just move reminds me almost of that color scene from the film "2001: A Space Odyssey". But this really gives you a better advantage in dodging oncoming ships and attacks, but also strengths the element of offence and defense.

This vintage space shooter is worth a flight.
