While it’s unclear whether or not Trevante Rhodes is into astrology, it’s hard not to notice the ways in which he embodies the archetype of his zodiac sign, Aquarius: unconventional, independent, progressive, nonconforming, and most of all, a free spirit.
When browsing Rhodes’ Instagram, one learns he has a thing for art and sunsets. He’s also a poet with great taste in music, in particular jazz and the soulful sounds of the ‘70s, such as the work of the great Marvin Gaye. But when asking Rhodes to define himself,...

If anyone embodies Drake’s song “Started From the Bottom,” Shamier Anderson, a fellow Canadian, does. “I’ve been grinding for a minute from Toronto,” says the actor, who grew up in Scarborough, a marginalized district with three brothers and their single mom, a Jamaican immigrant. “My mother didn’t accept the labels that we had very little hope, very little promise. She used to tell us, ‘Even though they label you as an at-risk community, we’re at risk to be extraordinary.’ “
Anderson took his mother’s words to heart: He started from the bottom, and now he’s here.
At 6-foot-2, he walks into the Southgate Bar at the Essex Hotel in New York, smiling brightly even though he’s in the middle of a 48-hour sprint promoting his latest movie, Bruiser. Streaming now on Hulu, the Onyx Collective drama stars Anderson as the temperamental father of an...

“It was like, lunch break and we’re in our trailers. And this guy came up, came out of his car, and it was Liam Neeson because he just wanted to say hi to Keanu Reeves,” Anderson recalled.

The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned pretty much a clean sweep: winning all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, and seven of its eight nominees winning overall — Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis were competing against each other in one category, Supporting Performance, with the former winning.

Will Smith was the surprise guest that set the room abuzz Wednesday night at the 14th annual African American Film Critics Assn. Awards at the Beverly Wilshire hotel.
But Smith had tough competition in the emotional-speech department from fellow honorees that included Danielle Deadwyler, Viola Davis, Angela Bassett and Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Deadwyler, who won lead actress honors for her tour de force role in “Till,” drew the crowd’s the attention to the world-changing impact of Mamie Till-Mobley, whose provocative decision to show pictures of her son’s brutalized corpse helped ignite the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and ’60s.
Like other speakers, Deadwyler drew a direct comparison to the conditions that existed more than a half-century ago to the present day, when politicians are pursuing racist legislation designed to restrict the teaching of American history in schools as it relates to the Black experience over the past 400 years.

Shamier Anderson is known for going to inordinate lengths to prepare for his movie roles, from embedding himself in street gangs to sleeping in the desert.
“My preparation process is always rooted in anxiety and not wanting to f**k it up,” the Scarborough-born actor tells Et Canada. “It’s like studying for an exam, you know what I mean?”
For his new family drama “Bruiser”, he did everything he could to get into the mindset of his character Malcolm, a car-salesman stepdad caught in a complicated relationship with his 14-year-old son Darious, played by Jalyn Hall, and his biological father Porter, played by Trevante Rhodes.

There’s a moment in “Bruiser,” a somber, lyrical coming-of-age tale set during a difficult Alabama summer, which speaks to the corrosive battle at the heart of the film. “You got a disease in your heart. It’s killing your family,” exclaims Porter, the absentee father to young Darious, the son he abandoned 13 years ago.

"He's always pretending to be this person... I know he's not." Hulu has debuted the official trailer for an indie film titled Bruiser, marking the feature directorial debut of Miles Warren. This first premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year and it also stopped by AFI Fest in the fall. It's set to launch on Hulu for streaming at the end of February. A 14-year-old boy turns to a charismatic loner for help after being beaten up, in director Miles Warren's searing feature film debut about fathers, families, and the effects of too much fighting. During summer, Darious explores the boundaries of his manhood through tumultuous interactions with Malcolm, his strict father, and a burgeoning friendship with mysterious drifter Porter. The film stars Trevente Rhodes, Shamier Anderson, Jalyn Hall, and Shinelle Azoroh. TIFF adds that it "contends with legacies of violence — and lands its every punch squarely on the heart.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.
